Default What is a good age to get another yorkie?

Hi,

I have a yorkie called Riley who is nearly six months, eventually I would like to get another so he has company when I'm out at work etc and I've always wanted two! what is a good age to get another, and how is Riley likely to act to other yorkie? Riley adores me and I worry he will feel pushed aside if another yorkie joins us.

Any feedback will be fab!

I wonder the same thing! Miss Minnie is almost 4 months and finally showing improvement in crate training and in potty training. I don't know if I'm ready for another "newborn" lol but I think she would like a companion eventually.

I will say though socialization will help alot!
Minnie goes to work with me (daycare) and even though she isn't around the kid but in limited supervised amounts of time she sees a lot of parents and kids one on one and she doesn't meet a stranger. And she has seen a handful of other dogs but also only small amounts and she seems to love everybody. But I don't know how she would do with a dog in our house

Mine are 10, 8 ,6 & 3

You know that term Double Trouble?

Having two pups can be just that. I think that once you are confident that your pup is fully potty trained, done with teething and well trained is when you should consider getting a new pup to add to the mix. Normally that can take up to 18 mo to 2 yrs of age. Plus a well behaved pup is your best tool when it comes to teaching a new pup the ins and out of potty training.

Hi, mine are
8 yrs, 2 yrs, 10 month and 3 month
only thing I would say is the longer you leave it the harder is it, it took Merlin over a week to get use to Molly but with Milo it was like... what's 1 more? lol. It's twice the work but in equal measures twice the reward or 4 x in my case.

My personal view is to wait untill #1 is potty trained and out of the puppy stage this way when a new pup comes along it will have a dog to learn from and it will be alil easier for me to train because im not teachin two at once, for one to distract the other and prolong training. I can take my time with one and thats just easier on me personally.

Mine are 6 months apart and inseparable. They sleep, eat, and potty together. They are great pals. I didn't think I would want two of them but when offered Patti I jumped at the chance. They are great company for each other and wear each other out and nessel down for a nap. I personally think there is no better time to get another one.

I have found that adults don't like puppies, and takes longer to accept a new addition. The more possessive your male gets about you, the harder it will be to add one.
I would suggest a female, if your male is real possessive. As adults, 2 of the same sex can fight. It will take a couple of weeks before your male accepts your new one, but eventually they will best of friends.

Personally I think if you're old enough to handle one Yorkie you're old enough to handle multiples

Seriously, a lot is going to depend on the personalities, both your dog and the one you're thinking of adding.

My experience has been to allow the resident to mature, and confidently be integrated into your Fam. I suggest that you wait until it is 2 yo, before you introduce another. I've had very good experiences bringing in a Puppy to an established Adult pack environment. The puppies have been accepted as though they were their own.

Then...
Same Breed,
Opposite Sex.

Be sure to be very attentive to your resident, any introduction like this can have very troubling effects. Greet, pet and feed it first, and intentionally allow privileges above the newcomer. Don't worry about how the newcomer feels about this, it expects to be 2nd given the circumstances.

Thanks everyone for your comments, I definitely will get another and it will be a female, I will use the same breeder as she is brilliant and I have gotten to know her so well. Riley is very attached to me, however me and my partner work full time and I would likeRiley to have company and a little friend xx

Riley is very affectionate and happy around everyone, and he doesn't seem bothered when he sees other dogs. I have noticed a lot of people have more than one yorkie and it would be nice to have a friend for Riley, I was thinking if I can handle Riley, I can handle another! Lol.

Hahaha...I was wondering the same thing...do you mean your age...or the dog's! lmao

Seriously, I see lots of truth in the posts already given. I think different dogs, and different people, can have somewhat differing experiences when owning 'groups' of pets due to many factors. What is best for one, is not always best for all, of us.

I got Brody when he was 14 months old, then puppy sat for a friend's Shih Tzu, who is about 3 months younger than Brody, then Brody was so forlorn when she went back home that I searched and found (golden) Mia. By that time, both Brody and Mia were 17 months old...they are only 6 days apart in age...both altered before I got them. They are THE BEST OF FRIENDS! They love each other so much, and keep each other company. They pull the scrunchies out of each others hair.

I have had a 'single' dog several times. But my experience has been that they really do (maybe not all of them, however) enjoy having a 'friend like them' for company...even a neighbor playmate they can talk to through the fence.

Most importantly, in no way has getting/having another dog slowed down my previous dogs' love for or devotion to me. Even my super devoted, protective Yorkie-Poo had no problems with another dog (or human) being near me as long as he sensed that other dog (or human) intended no harm to me. Otherwise, all bets were off.
