| Advice on flea and heartworm products Hi, I just joined this site today in the hopes of finding some experienced advice. Trinket, my 3lb baby, (whose birthday is today), is at the moment being spayed and having her baby teeth removed. I really need some advice on the best products for fleas and heartworm. I know some are combined, does anyone like these? Are they safe for the smaller dogs or does anyone have any suggestions about effective alternatives? Thanks for the help! |

| Welcome to Yorkie Talk. Wishing Trinket a speedy recovery after her spay. I use Heartgard Plus for heartworm prevention. Looking forward to the return of Interceptor. For fleas and ticks, we use topical Frontline. I'm not crazy about it because it is a pesticide, but all "natural" products are not without their problems.

| I should add that the reason I am looking forward to having Interceptor back is that is covers an extra intestinal worm or two that is higher risk up here in Virginia.

| I actually don't use a flea preventative at all. Maybe that makes me a bad mom but I don't like the chemicals and she stays mostly indoors. We use Wormshield for heartworm. Same ingredient as Heartguard (Ivermectin) but basically the generic brand.

| That's one of the reasons I was looking for input as I don't like the pesticides either. Trinket is also an indoor dog and goes for one outside walk per day, but still got fleas so I need to do something. |

YT 1000 Club Member | HAPPY BIRTHDAY TRINKET GET WELL SOON ! I've used Heartgard and Frontline, but changed over to Trifexis just for the convenience of a single "pill", not because the others didn't work. That might be convenient for you as well. Didn't/haven't had a problem with either.

| We use heartgard and frontline for the dogs. One dog instead uses revolution but I'm not crazy about it and definitely don't trust it in summer months and will be switching back soon.

| I never had to use anything for fleas in ND but now that we have moved to Arkansas and are out and about more I have used Frontline. Heartworm for the other. I will certainly check out the Trifexis when it is time again for bloodwork after I have run out of Heartworm. I love how much I learn on YT! |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I'd ask my vet those questions; it really depends on your area. I use Heartgard plus, it kills all worms a dog can pass to a human and that's important to me, since the dogs sleep with us. I think I'd die if I got a worm! It doesn't kill one other type of worm, but they aren't prevalent in AZ so I'm okay with that. We don’t use flea meds, so I can’t help you with that, but you probably should use something if you live in Florida. I hear they are easier to prevent than treat.

| Welcome to Yorkie talk... I am a newbie too. I have three Yorkies and my smallest is 5 months old and weighed in at a Whopping 2.8 lbs today. I use Trifexis for all three of them. It is a pill you give them once a month. It covers Fleas, heartworm and round worm and large worms. I love it! Just give it to them in a small piece of meat or cheese right after they have their breakfast. Since Naevia is so small she only gets a half of a pill. |

| I use Trifexis and love love love it. Fleas are bad where I live and even with daily walks I have never found a flea on Chewbacca

| I use Sentinel and Comfortis. I pray they start selling Sentinel again, as I only have enough left for my 3 until July.

| Maximo, I'm in VA too and WAS looking forward to having Interceptor back but apparently, Norvartis is discontinuing the product... Will you keep using Heartgard Plus? I live in Northern VA and fleas aren't really much of an issue where I live, especially since the pups stay inside most of the day. I think I'm more concerned about the whipworms than fleas... Sentinel or Heartgard... that is the question... |
