| Is it just me or.... Does my yorkie understand when I talk to him? Put him on the bed and I walk away to brush my teeth and I hear this little bark I tell him to hold on that mommy will be there soon. He waits a little then barks again and I say Bentley hold on so he doesn't bark until I come in then Im sitting on the bed telling him how cute he is and he turns his head like if he understands me. My husband thinks Im crazy but I swear that my dogs have a deep connection with me, they feel my vibes. And if I am crazy I can't be the only one!! Haha |

| While I don't think they "understand" literally, except for commands, phrases that are repeated, etc., they are SO intuitive. They read the subtlest emotion, facial expression, and your body language & state of mind. So they might as well understand English!

| I think they can pick up on a lot of the words we say and kind of pair them with what where doing. I love it when I talk to Callie and she looks at me with her big brown eyes like she is understanding and listening to every word I say of course there are the times I am singing to music and she looks at me like ummm mom your crazy lol

| My grandaughter spent the nite one night and wouldn't sleep so I asked her if I let Laddy sleep with her if she would be ok, she said yes. I walked in the living room, said, Laddy go sleep with Allita, he immediately jumped down and went and got on the bed with her. So I really do think they understand more than we give them credit for.

Our Blessings R Many Donating Member | I definately believe they understand what we are saying. Sometimes even if we spell it out not only the Yorkie breed but our Dobies through the years did.Give it time and your hubby will be telling you how well Bentley understands what he is saying too |

| I am amazed at the number of words I know our Sophie understands. I also know she has "selective" hearing

| They sure do have selective hearing. My cat and Brandi hear really well when I say "dinnertime" But if call them then all of sudden they can't hear I am saying. |

| I too, think they understand way more than we give them credit for. Yogi will be frantically searching for his current favorite toy. I'll tell him he left it in the bedroom. He'll turn, run to the bedroom and come back with it. Gracie Ruth has the Selective Hearing disability. There are times I'll call and call for her and nothing. But as soon as she hears, Gracie Ruth Murray! she comes running and has the good sense to just her i'masweetpuppydon'thurtme look on me.

| Columbo absolutely understands everything. I suppose there are some words he's never heard before that he doesn't know, but yes, he really does understand everything else. He is 9 and we noticed the same thing with our golden when he got older. He's been listening to the english language long enough to know the meaning of most words or things we say. We test him sometimes to not use anybody language associated with what we say and he still responds that he knows. We even ask him questions and he will spin in circles when the answer is yes, but just stand and stare at us when the answer is no. Ex. He is staring at us... "Do you want to eat?" no response, "do you want to go outside?" no response, "do you want to go upstairs?" spin, spin, spin. Another example, saying to my husband "I'm tired, I think I'll go to bed". Immediately, if Columbo wants to go, he jumps down to go. If he wants to stay up, the ears go back as if to say, "don't even think about taking me and he turns into Bobohyde." All this before I've done anything or asked him if he wants to go with me. If he wants to go to bed before we are ready, he will get up and start barking at us. Some words I can't even spell anymore because he still knows what I'm talking about. I have to use other words he's not as familiar with if I want to fool him. I really like it when a dog has lived with you long enough that it's easy to communicate like that. Last edited by bobohyde; 04-03-2013 at 07:17 AM. |

| Neo is so smart, I'm just glad he doesn't have opposable thumbs! He gets into enough trouble as it is. We have to spell certain words, too or substitute them because he has figured them out, especially "vet","meds","bath"-along with being discreet about setting up for it,lol;"walkies", "bye-bye car". Connor is not quite as astute, but he still amazes me when I ask him to "go get Bubba" -and he comes back with Neo, also he'll follow me to the bathroom before turning in for the night and I'll tell him to "go get in bed", and he'll be there waiting for me! BOTH boys have "selective hearing" when it comes to certain things. I've never encountered a breed more cat-like! |
