YT 500 Club Member | rawhide ok? Are rawhide treats OK to give yorkies? If so, what's the safest and best one to give! I always thought they were dangerous for dogs. Especially small ones. Any advice???

| NO NO NO!!!!!!!!!! OK now after replying the direct way :P No they can swell up and cause blockage... Greenies are another NO NO!! I myself like Deer Antlers but some people will warn of teeth issues. Bullysticks are good.

| Absolutely not! My mom gave them to her pups for years, and I remember so many times her having to fish a gross, slimy gob out of someone's mouth when they started choking on them. She gave me a box of stuff for Sam that she had stashed. There was a package of rawhide sticks in it. Sure enough, they were made in China, and stamped "irradiated". Straight to the trash they went! Sam only has stuffed toys right now, and a Nylabone puppy chew that he only gets when I'm right there with him.

| agreed no it is not digestable and it can cause choking, harbor bacteria among other things. bully sticks are better imo i cut the excess off when they chew it soft. put them away daily and only give when supervised...and to my knowledge bully sticks are digestable.

| Rawhide is a big No No- Here are the risk associated with them: These are the most common rawhide risks: •Contamination. As with pet toys, rawhide chews can contain trace amounts of toxic chemicals. And, as with other pet (or human) foods, Salmonella or E. coli contamination is possible. Even humans can be at risk when coming into contact with these bacteria on rawhide treats. •Digestive irritation. Some dogs are simply sensitive or allergic to rawhide or other substances used in their manufacture. This can cause problems, including diarrhea. •Choking or blockages. Rawhide bones and other edible chews can pose a choking and blockage risk. In fact, this is a much bigger risk than contamination or digestive irritation. If your dog swallows large pieces of rawhide, the rawhide can get stuck in the esophagus or other parts of the digestive tract. Depending on its size and where it is located, a vet may be able to remove these pieces fairly easily through the throat. But sometimes, abdominal surgery is needed to remove them from the stomach or intestines. If it isn't resolved, a blockage can lead to death.

Agreed. I have a local holistic pet store that sells only American products, but goes beyond to provide chews that are sourced locally. Almost all of her chews are from in state. She sells bully sticks, rabbit ears (eww), duck feet (I think, I know there's some kind of feet- double eww), pizzelles, antlers, etc. Those are the kinds of chews I buy for my little pack.

| I never give rawhide chews to my dogs. Years ago we tried them and they would throw them up. That was enough for me to never use them again.

| There are rawhide products that are made of chopped up rawhide. They call it digestible but really they have the same problems as other rawhide products. They can cause blockages in the digestive system. It can gather in the small intestine and block it off. They are made of really low grade protein. It's really not something you want your dog to digest anyway. |

| No they are not safe for any dog they can cause blockages. Bully sticks are 100% digestible they are the safest chew.
