| Why don't they just quit making jerky for mass production? I mean, seriously.

| The article I read said that they found trace elements of an antibiotic used on chickens in the treats. The only reason they recalled was because it was an antibiotic that is approved only for chickens in China. Apparently the antibiotics found in chickens in the US are safe? I don't know what is going on here. I don't think they know for sure what is causing the dogs to get sick. |

| Tibbe had a cast iron stomach until I started giving him a bit of Milo's Chicken Jerky last January for recall. In about a month, he had pneumonia, the vet thought, secondary to aspirating some vomit from a stomach so irritated by something that he got very nauseated. The only different thing he had had in the last 2 or 3 weeks was an occasional piece of jerky and then toward the end of January, he was zipping in from outside so fast, I would give him extra large pieces and not just bits of the jerky. Since that episode, he has had several, similar episodes but I try to get on top of those the moment he seems to belch up something - or have reflux, whatever it is, but I think acid must come up into his mouth because after the belch, he is licking and swallowing as if he had something in his mouth! I will give him his Famotidine and if he belches and starts to RS, he gets a dose of Cerenia, too, for nausea to hopefully prevent vomiting and maybe another case of pneumonia. I know it's quite possible there is no direct correlation to his eating that jerky right before his tummy went south but I believe there is a connection since I'm not convinced the two things are just coincidence. So Tibbe stopped getting any treats after that except what I make from his kibble. I honestly don't think he knows the difference - a treat is a treat for him and he goes absolutely nuts for his kibble treats. When I call him from the yard, he always comes running hard and fast, thinking of his treat that is usually waiting - a single little piece of soaked/microwaved/dried kibble! And he just licks his chops like he's had sirloin.

| Here is an interesting article for anyone who is interested in reading more about the subject. The author has been following the dog treat issue for years. Has attended many meetings with pet food producers and researchers. Is there More to the Jerky Treat Story |
