Yorkies flying cargo We're flying from Korea to Japan, and Japan to Hawaii with our next army duty station. Because we're flying on orders (my husbands self and my 5 month old) we are not allowed to take our 2 pups on as a carry on. No exceptions right now I have already talked o several people and they Have to fly cargo. We will have a 5 hour lay over on Japan about a 2 hour flight to Japan and 8 hours to Hawaii. Any advice for the pups! There about 6lbs one and 11 lbs the other. Thank you! |
Even though it would be a huge expense, do you have a friend that could fly commercial and take them to you? I have never flown with my furbaby, but I cannot imagine letting him fly cargo unless they let me fly in the cargo hold, too. |
We would have to have two friends and then were talking $4000-6000 in plane tickets for them... While I wish we could there is no way we have that kind of money just to spend. The LAST thing I want to do is have them fly cargo we are just not given a choice. So many families just sell there dogs here in Korea and those dogs end up re homed every few years because of these reasons but to us our puppies are our family. I'm so stressed about them flying cargo and wish I could do something but unfortunately we don't have options if we want to bring our pups :-( |
are you flying commercial or on a military transport. if commerical what airline? when do you have to leave |
Would the military carrier allow you to put a webcam in their crate that you could monitor from your seat? Could you do the webcam without them knowing? If I had to fly Huey cargo with no other option, if I could at last watch him and know he was warm, watered, fed and breathing, I would feel much better about it. |
We are flying commercial on orders, through united. We talked to the military on our end, I talked to pet help and cargo. Cargo is even had a pre-recording that says active duty military and family have to have pets on Cargo only. We leave the end of February but no dates are set dates |
I am wondering if any dog couriers would donate their time to help you out? |
What is a dog courier? We just don't have any money to be able to give or pay:-( we have been here in Korea 4 years and an army move with the military we will be buying all new furniture we need vehicles and all of that. We will also be traveling to two different islands the dogs with us because they will send us too the big island for 4 days the Oahu. The web cam is an interesting idea but we won't have access to the Internet while in the air. |

I like the idea of a dog courier, too. Would be nice if someone reading this could donate services... |
I will have to look into that. We are also going to be traveling with my little one who will be 6.5 months old. I'm just hoping someone else has done it and its okay!! I know lots of families have dogs here and do it but my pups are very small I worry. |
Wow, this is awful that the airlines are doing this to your husband and you, a military family...really irks me.... Pets and Air Travel : The Humane Society of the United States at the end of this article is a link to information you may find helpful, I tried to link it but for some reason It doesn't come up right when I try to. anyway...try not to worry, take every precaution, you are forced to do what you have to do....let us know how it goes, I will be thinking of you all... |
Do you have anxiety or any other emotional type disorders? |

By the way lynzy's link also had a page for what to do if you have to fly cargo, they did have some great tips. Travelling Tips for Pets on Planes, Trains, or Ships : The Humane Society of the United States |
I thought of that but would it work with two dogs, plus she has the situation of it having to in some ways go though the military. I travel a lot with my dog and know lots of the ins and out so for the heck of it I talked to United Airlines, if the dogs go as cargo they will allow you to check on them and take them out of the cage during the long lay over. If you were a standard passenger you could by a pass for your dog. If I was you prior to the flight I would just call the airlines directly and see if you could do that, just give them your reservation number and see. I feel for what you must be going through because I know I would be besides myself, if you are forced to go the cargo route you should get tranq. for the dogs but be sure to try them out at home during the day well in advance of you travel date. I read that Hawaii quarantines dogs, will that be the case for you. |
OMG I really feel for you on this! Isn't it freezing in Korea and Japan in Feb? that long in the cargo hold, they could die! This is terrible :( I can\'t believe how our military people are treated for all that the do! My sister is married to a soldier and the stories she tells me! :( |
