Sick Dog... 1 Attachment(s) Hi Yt, my name is JC and my wifes name is katie, we just purchased a dog from miami and on its way to lax it got a cold, its been coughing all night and hardly let us sleep. I guess due to the weather changes it got sick. I spoke with the breeder and he told us to give him 1 teaspoon of robitussin for kids. Does this sound right or should i go to petco and look for the right medicine? |
Welcome to YT I would call your vet and have him checked out. Please keep us posted. :) |
If it were my puppy I would take it to the vet so Kennel Cough could be ruled out. It is very common with pups and can only be treated with Meds. Pups tend to hang on to Kennel Cough for a long timeso its best to be treated as soon as possible. |
I wouldn't do it! I don't know what the proper dose of Robitussin would be for a child but imagine a child would be 30-50 lbs and I'm sure that is at least 10-20 times bigger than your puppy  Call the vet. |
Go to the Vet. I hope your puppy feels better soon! |
2 Reasons to go to the vet: 1. Your puppy easily could have kennel cough - only meds will cure 2. Your sales agreement with your breeder might specify that you have to have a vet check the pup over within so many hours/days etc. Also your vet can give you a clean bill of health on your new addition. These little ones are very fragile and will go down quickly. I know there is a thread on YT that talked about if your dog can catch a cold. Good Luck! |
Thank you for all the responses, the dog is due for its last vaccinations in 10 days, should i wait 10 days to take the dog, or should i take it in right now? It was last checked by the vet on Dec 14, 2005. Vet said it was perfectly fine. |
The weather outside being cold does NOT cause a cold. VIRUSES cause colds! Definitely bring this little guy to the vet immediately. I'm sorry you received a sick puppy. This is one of the reasons I try to discourage people from not meeting a dog before you buy it. This dog will probably need antibiotics and who knows what else might be wrong with it. Try to get into a vet ASAP. If the dog is coughing all the time like that, hour on the hour then there is a STRONG possibility it is in his lungs (phenomena). I have had it myself and you'll be surprised how quickly it goes from coughing a lot to not being able to breathe. If you can't make an appointment TODAY. Listen for wheezing and if he is still constantly coughing consider calling the emergency vet. PLEASE keep us posted on the little guy! He's really a cute, big guy. How old is he? |
Also, keep the dog AWAY from other dogs right now. You do not want them to catch the cold. Kennel cough will take a long time to get rid of. Did you bring the dog to this vet or did the breeder? I would want answers from my vet, not the breeder's vet. |
I wouldnt delay in getting him in to the vet either. It could quickly turn to pneumonia and then he would be on IV's at an emergency center. |
Thank you cheryl, as last stated the dog was checked 3 days ago by the breeders vet and said he was fine. I can scan the health certificate so you guys can tell me if hes sick or not, cause i have no idea what half of the things there are. The dog has also been given the flu shot, so it must be a cold or some other problem. |
I wouldn't go with the children's meds either. In that case you are only treating 1 symptom of the virus, the coughing. If she is coughing to try to clear her lungs, then it can make her sickr. She could also have a fever. I don't recommend meds for people unless it is recommended by a vet. Most of the time a vet will give you an antibiotic for a dog. Dogs can also cough from worms, but it wouldn't be as frequent as what you speak of. |

I suggest you go visit the vet as well. Though the vet visit a couple of days ago says he's fine, this might be something that just recently surfaced that they did not see before. Please take it to the vet. |
He looks like he should have been old enough to have those shots by now. Maybe the shots were delayed for some reason? Can I ask again how old this dog is and is there a website you or something you got him from? That vet certificate just gives the airline a big yes or no to shipping him. I don't believe it would say anything about the coughing or shots. They should have sent you a shot record. Make sure the vet sees that when you bring him in. |

1 Attachment(s) The dog is weeks 18 weeks old, I guess i kind of exxagerated when i said hes been coughing all night, he coughed more like 1 time every hour, this morning he hasnt coughed at all. Heres the edited copy of the health certificate. Thank you guys so much for all the info. |
Well if I read that right it looks like he has had the bordatello vaccine. He still could have collapsed trachea and that is why he is coughing. I would still have him checked by a vet. |

I think you misunderstood me. I am just saying it looks like it's older than 3 months. People can tell a dog's age by the size, the fur, the shape of it's face, and how open it's face looks. I could be wrong, esspecially if it is a mix and it's hard telling sometimes with pictures. A good breeder will give the dog it's shots according to schedule, not if it's sold the dog or not. However alot of them will sell them before 12 weeks to save money on that set of shots. But if the breeder waited after this age and postponed it's shots that is bad. That is all I'm saying. What is the health guarantee the breeder gave you anyways? |

2 Attachment(s) Its a female sorry, were just not use to use to it yet. We dont even have a name for her. He gave me a one year warranty. |

please look refer to this thread and compare it to the "health warranty" you recieved. |
To be on the safe side, I would still take her to the vet. She really is cute!!! :) |
I would take her to the vet as well. I am just saying that only the congenital health might be covered for the 1 year. Usually other sicknesses are covered only 3 days after she is received. So if you have to take her to the vet anyways, then you might as well have her checked for the cold too. Just go with your gut instinct. It sounds like you've decided not to take her to the vet. Then make sure you monitor her food and water intake. Make sure she's not lethargic and wheezing as well. Maybe even just calling a vet and telling them about the symptoms and see what they think will help you with your decision. Just make sure she's not miserable or has a fever. Good luck to her. |
2 Attachment(s) thank you cheryl, will do. Ill see how much it cost to get a check up, this is the first time we own a pet, so i have no idea what it cost, hopefulyl not an arm an a leg. I just cant believe how much energy these yorkies have, she was playing allllll night with my cell phone and her toys. As soon as we woke up she wanted to play some more, its incredible, i love her already. she has a habit of biting on wires, i keep telling her no but as soon as i turn my head she goes right to it. She power sleeps for like 5 minutes and plays for like 30 minutes at a time. Hopefully the nutri cal works, they told me to give it to her two times a day(quantity= 1st line of my index finger). |

Congrats on getting your new baby! :happyboun I would take your little one to the vet just to make sure it is nothing serious!!! |
An update, i scheduled an appointment for tommorow. What i noticed was she only coughs when she goes downstairs on to the tile or when shes cold. Im guessing she has a cold. |
I'm really glad you took our advise and you're going to bring her in. You guys are definately going to be good owners. Let us know what the vet says! Take care cher |
