| Warning before having your litter of YT babies Hello Everybody, I am a new member and I would like to share this with you. My Yorkshire (Bailey) had a litter of 6 puppies. Before she had her litter, we cut her hair shorter around her nipples. This was done so the babies would have no problem nursing. The second night after the birth, Bailey started barking so I got up to let her outside. When I went in the room I noticed Bailey had something hanging from her hair. She had a puppy tangled in her remaining long hair around it's neck. I thought for sure we lost the puppy. My wife and I had to cut the baby out of her hair using scissors. My wife performed CPR and after a minute the puppy was breathing. The puppy is now 8 days old and doing fine. After the incident we cut Bailey's hair on her body to only 2 inches in length. The puppies now have no problem moving through her hair. Just a warning before your having a litter, I would groom the hair on the body short. Hope this information saves puppies. |

| I have always cut my mommas short for whelping....never had this happen, but I just think they are more comfortable in a nice short, sassy cut while dealing with all those tiny kids! I can bathe them and they dry quickly before returning to babies. |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Glad you caught it in time and the puppy is okay. Problem is many home breeders don't read anything about breeding before they breed, so they'll miss this advice. Some breeders suggest banding the mother’s hair in little pony tails on both sides, but this goes to show you, Yorkies could never survive in the wild, and need human intervention.
