Children (especially little girls) love small dogs and they always want to pick him up. I have had several incidents where small children in the neighborhood have picked up my dog before I even had a chance to stop them. Personally, I think yorkies are very vulnerable around children. I know of 2 tragedies where yorkies lived with young children. The first, the little girl was playing with the dog and accidentally dropped him from the playset and broke all 4 of his legs. The second, the children got out of the car without paying attention that the dog was getting out behind them. They slammed the door on him and that poor little dog didn't survive. Both cases, the children did not mean to harm the dog. But it's unlikely those accidents would have happened with adults. And those kids were in elementary school, so it's not just babies and toddlers. Recently, my son and his girlfriend (they're in their 20s) stopped by with the girlfriend's 7 year old sister. I didn't know she was with them and I didn't even know she had a little sister. The little girl had Columbo picked up before I even got to the hallway. He had just had knee surgery a month before. I almost had a cow! I think I probably startled them because I took him out of her arms and said not to pick him up. He's had surgery on both back legs this year and I'm not going to chance him being dropped. So, I think you are very wise to protect your pup around children.
