YorkieTalk Newbie! | Hello! New to this site and have a few questions Hi everyone, I know I already posted this but I don't think I put it in the right spot, I am new to this so plz bear with me lol. I have a yorkiepoo named sport and have a new purebred baby boy yorkie coming home on Monday, and I'm not sure what to name the little guy, so any suggestions would be appreciated cuz I am not good at boy names. Also, I live in Ontario Canada and want to know how I would go about making him a show dog? I am getting him as a companion and was not planning on showing him but it sounds interesting and I thought I'd give it a shot, that is if he seems to enjoy it. Ive found lots of websites about showing yorkies and was wondering if anyone could give me the official rules/guidelines web address. Thanks so much! I am very excited to be a part of this group and can't wait to get my new fur baby here to his forever home! |

| There is a Yorkie Showing and information area here on YT. Was your dog purchased as a potential show quality? Conformation showing can be very competitive. You might want to look into the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America and there are also publications for people who show. If your dog does not do well in conformation there is still obedience and agility shows that you could enter her in. Go to the AKC website and look for clubs in your area. There is a place where you can enter your zip code and do searches for the various types of clubs. That is where you will get a lot of information. Talk to others that show in your area and see if someone will help you learn how it is done. |

| Hi all. I'm new to this forum and I ask that all bear with me. I have a new yorkie puppy named Xena and she is 13 weeks old. We are in the potty training stage and I know yorkies are very difficult to train. She uses pee pads in the house and I take her outside every couple hours. She usually pees just a little each time we go out and she gets rewarded when doing so. She (sometimes) uses the pee pads in the house but also doesn't bother with them either at other times. She also has pee pads in her crate which she always uses when in there. Her crate is quite large and I only like to crate her at night or when we are not home during the day. Anyone have any other suggestions on this process? Also, she does not like to have her harness or collar on. She scratches at it or tries to "rub it off" against the walls inside. How long should it take Xena to get used to this harness? Thanks for any help or suggestions. |

You should not keep her harness on her all the time. It is very bad for the skin and fur and also a coking hazard. A puppy her age should only have a harness on when you are taking her out. It's usually best not to use collars on small breed dogs. A puppy that young should not wear a collar. I use a cat type break away collar on Gracie just to hold her tags but she is an adult. I trained Gracie to her pads first and when she got a few months older I started taking her for walks to potty. She now pees outside mostly but has her pad for in case she has to go at night time or when I am not here. I also keep her inside during bad weather. | |

This takes at least a month IMO. Is her crate large enough the pee pad area is in a quarter of it, she has food and water in another quarter, a bed in another quarter and toys room to play in the remaining quarter? If not please cobsider a larger crate or play pen area (x-pen or toddler gate system) if the pee pad area is too large or small she can learn to potty where she sleeps, eats and plays. My dogs have large wire crates, seceral with removable doors to attach them. mine are older so we no lobger have a potty area but this is so critical to separate areas while they are young to establish behaviir, patterns and separation of destinct areas. Also try only using the harness for walks so she associates it with fun going out time and not this silly thing she has to wear. Seceral yorkie talkers make dog clothing with D-rings attached perfect for dogs who have irritation or annoyance to traditional harnesses-check out the for sale section on here. Remember to establish grooming patterns and behavior now too. Can't wait to see pics welcome to yorkie talk!!!
