| In Need of Some Guidance My husband and I added Bella and Rocky to our family this past Saturday -- What a blessing they have been in our lives It is very important to me that we are good puppy parents, so that they grow up to be happy well adjusted dogs. That being said, I am struggling with two things (which I know are common) but I would greatly appreciate feedback: 1) We are really struggling with them using their pee pads -- they don't want to use the ones in their playpen at all and will hold it the entire time that they are in there (sometimes 4+ hours, until we can run home from work), at which time they promptly pee on the carpet directly outside of their playpen. Also, when we have them out with us, I will watch them and can usually tell when they have to go (they start sniffing out their spot and walking in circles) - then I take them to the pee pad and stand with them for 5+ minutes and nothing... then the other one will start to get into mischief or they will begin playing with one another, I will turn my back for 5 seconds and they are off of the pee pad and peeing on the carpet... I have placed pee pads in two other locations outside of their play pen, in hopes that they would use them, but it was to no avail. I know I need to have patience and continue doing what I am doing, but I want to know if anyone has any tips to get them to actually pee on the pee pads 2) Taping the ears: I have watched several videos on taping the ears and the breeder began the process... however, the one thing that is not covered in the videos I have watched and literature I have read is what to do if you have two puppies (litter mates), who love to wrestle with one another and get into mischief together... Ultimately they convince eachother to bite the tape off of one anothers ear, which does not appear to be a pleasant experience for them, but gets the tape off (Bella has one bite mark on her ear from when she was with the breeder) Any advice is greatly appreciated!!

| How old are your puppies? If you take the corner of a pee pad and sponge up a bit of urine where they go it will help give them the urge to use the pad next time. The ear taping is something you have to just keep putting back on sometimes several times a day. A pain I know lol. Good luck and congrats. Oh and also you might try just shaving the top third of the ear inside and out sometimes this will help the ears to stand without the taping.

| The puppies are 12 weeks old Thanks for the advice, I will try that. Do you find that they will not pee on the pee pads if there is already pee on them?

| For the ears, if you keep the hair trimmed really short, the ears may come up on their own. Even if you tape them, the ear fur should be kept short until they are really up.

| They are still really young and do not have control of their bladders yet. It may be the excitement of being let out that causes them to pee on the carpet. Putting their urine on the pee pad can help. You can also buy a liquid house breaking aid that has a special hormone that will cause them to want to pee on the pad. Most dogs love to pee on top of where some other dog has already gone. At this stage you really have to keep your eye on them every second. They don't know much and cannot control themselves so it is up to you to get them to the pad and keep them there. Some pee pads say they have the attractant on it but they don't work very well. Adding the liquid attractant will help if you get a good brand. At their age keeping the hair trimmed on the ear tips will help. I would wait a bit to start taping as they may come up on their own if you keep the hair on their ears short. You are going to be really busy with the 2 for quite a while. They are so adorable as puppies but it is a lot of work to train one properly......and you have twice the work!!! I'm sure once you get through it all it will be well worth it. I still regret not buying Gracie's sister when I got her. |
