Default You may have a yorkie

You can have two dogs of different sizes from the same litter, I have siblings, that I definately know are brother and sister from the same litter. My girl is 5 pounds, while my boy is 8+pounds. No one can assure that a littler of pups will be all the same size. The show standard just states that yorkshire terriers be less than 7 pounds, but if you do enter a dog smaller than 4 pounds, especially a female, the judge will hardly ever put that dog up. A male, maybe, but never a female. Some yorkies can grow as large as 18 to 20 pounds, although you don't see them that often. Silky's have a longer body than the yorkies and their faces seem to be slightly longer in the nose.

LBK408,
Most breeders realize that by the time the new owner finds a proplem with their new pet that the new owner is already attached and will not do anything as drastic as returning it. If I were you I would demand a partial refund. Obviously you did not get what you paid for and since they were advertised as Yorkies the whole thing was a scam. Contact the breeder and asure her that you will report her to police, BBB, AKC and or go to small claims court for at least a partial refund.

It happened to my parents and they kept on until they got the partial refund and had their puppy, too. He was supposed to be AKC and instead was CKC long after they got him and waited for AKC papers that never came in the mail. I believe you are a victim of a classic bait and switch like my parents.

Yeah, but actually I think that my Max, whatever he is (alien, I think!), is worth every penny - even if I was "scammed". They don't know what they missed!

Rocky, on the other hand, is a true "classic" yorkie. The breeders gave me a "Certified Pedigree" that goes back five full generations. The AKC sent me one that goes back three. Many, many Champions in the line. He's officially listed as a "Blue and Gold" yorkie. The breeder (not professional breeder, but a nationwide "shower") pointed out how his teeth were perfect, bitewise, his tail had been cropped at exactly the correct show length and angle, leaving exactly one eigth inch of gold visible when properly groomed, etc, etc. Right after purchase she gave me the name and address of their trainer and explained to me that the trainer would have Rocky for about three months, at a cost of about $3,000 to $4,000.

OK! Hold on there Babalooie! We wanted a pet! Breeder didn't understand. Of course we would want to train and show him, wouldn't we? Why else did we come and buy such a pedigreed dog?!?! Well I didn't know how pedigreed he was till after I paid and.....yep...held him a while. (Always too late then!)

Never had any intention of showing him, nor breeding him. Nothing wrong with showing dogs - just not my thing! So Rocky is a true prize. Very lovable......but......kinda boring since Max came along!

Rocky wants to sit, cuddle, and generally be loved. Nothing wrong with that!

Max wants to play, is quite a bit more independent, and at least once a week does something new that surprises/shocks me! He looks every bit the yorkie, but does things I've not seen before. I did read that yorkies were originally bred less than two hundred years ago as "ratters". A cross between (I think) Silkie and Australian terrior. Originally bred at about 18 lbs. Once in the US, folks decided to breed them smaller and smaller till the current standard was reached. I would doubt that Max is a true throwback, bred like the original yorkie, but he sure does make me appreciate what the original was probably like!

In our house in the Pocono mountains, we will see the occasional mouse. Rocky looks curiously at them but won't go near a mouse. Gets a look that "sounds" like, "Eeeewww". My wife Robin threw Max into the crawlspace one day while I was down there doing a little maintenance. Max immediately ran off into the darkness and came back and started tapping on my shoulder (it's a crawlspace, remember? I was lying on my side!) I turned my head and saw he has a mouse, which he dutifully dropped and then ran off again. After the third one I brought him back up to the house.

Very different personalities, these two!

Default History of yorkie

You have this backwards
(A cross between (I think) Silkie and Australian terrior. Originally bred at about 18 lbs) The Yorkie and the Australian Terrier were bred to create the Silky Terrier. I do have a lot about the history of the yorkies on my site, and I am always looking for more information to add. You can read about the history here. http://yorkieviews.com/yorkiehistory.htm

Sorry mm.

That's why I said "(I think)"! Didn't take the time to go look it up.

I'll be more careful next time!

Thank you guys and gals, I just really enjoy researching about our little furkids because when I got my first two I knew absoultly nothing about toy dogs. I had always had either Labs, Lab mixes, or Shepard mixes, never had little dogs, but I had seen them and fell in love with then and decided that when my human kids all left home that I would get one of those yorkie things. Now I have 5, and show them, and am starting to breed them, so if I ever find a book on them, I get it. I have all the ones I could find, plus books on breeding, training, and vet books.

We sure value your information and your insight, mmyorkies! Maybe you need to write up a Yorkie cooking book now!

I do have a page with some healthy receipes on it for dogs, but I do need to find some treat receipes. I have not found anything I like in the books I have yet, but eventually I will. Just all takes time.

I also have a couple of Trivia pages if anyone likes that kind of stuff.

Have you looked at "Barker's Grub" by Rudy Edalati? It has a lot of interesting information about nutrition and healing foods. In addition to good receipes it's entertaining to read! Most of his receipes are large quantities that can be frozen so you probably wouldn't have to cook but one day out of the month for our little furbabies!!

I don't have that one, I will have to check it out. Right now I have "The Dog Food Cook Book", and "Natural Health for Dogs and Cats". Course cooking for yorkies isn't bad anyhow, I cook 2 chickens at a time and only cook once a month. I jsut freeze it in containers with portions that last about 5 or 6 days.

Very efficient. Do your Yorkies beg for fresh food? Yoda sticks his nose up at food that ain't fresh! Picky little booger, that one!
