Has anyone had this done for their dogs? My Myles who is 15 yrs old is in renal failure and I feel like this is my last resort for him He is not eating much and nausea

Aw I am sorry to hear that! I don't really know much about renal failure, but if the Vet thinks it is going to help him I would def try it, Peanut has had Sub Q a couple times and it really seemed to help him!

Good Luck and I will keep your baby Myles in my thoughts and prayers!

thanks for ur feedback what was wrong w/ peanut that you had to do the sub q fluids and how quickly did u see a difference? thanks denise

Peanut had Pancreatitis. The day he was diagnosed was a Saturday. He wasn’t in that bad of shape… I mean he was sick don’t get me wrong, but we caught the Pancreatitis before it got too bad. He had the fluids that day, I believe it was about 1 in the afternoon he stayed there and was given fluids until 6 in the evening. When I left him he was very upset, kinda just somber. He had no energy, just blah not feeling well. When I picked him up I saw almost a complete difference! He was more “alive” I won’t say he was 100% he was about 50% . The next day I dropped him off for more fluids, he was there from 9 in the morning till about 4 in the evening.. When I picked him up Sunday I could tell he was a lot better!! That Monday he was feeling pretty good!! I think without the fluids it would have taken him longer to feel better, the fluids flushed his pancreas.

I don’t really know much about renal failure, is the Sub q what you Vet is telling you to do?

he is saying i can try it he doesn't sound so optimistic b/c w/ renal failure it is pretty much fatal at least i know i tried in my heart it didnt sound like it took soo long or so many hours he would stay it seemed like they would do it and than leave he is only 3# 8 oz now 4# when he was at his healthiest so he is tiny also the injection for nausea b/c he stopped eatin it is worth a try

Aw I'm sorry!! If it were me I would try anything! It might make him feel a little better, I know it hydrates them. I'm so sorry you are going through this with your baby, it is so hard seeing them sick!! I will keep your sweet baby in my prayers!

Yes I had to do it with two mine of mine. Has the Vet suggested giving him a Phosphorus Binder to take with his meals?? Another value to keep an eye on when doing lab work is to keep a check on his Phosphorus Level. When this level is really high it makes them feel even worse.

It's true that all they can do at this point is to try to make him feel a little better. I lost one of my furry pals at age 15. It is so difficult to see them losing the vigor they once had. It is also a challenge to decide when it is time to let go. I was very cowardly about it. I regret to this day.

I hope they can make you little guy feel better for as long as possible.

You still remain in my prayers. I know it is very difficult to watch them go dowm hill. I know with my first one that had kidney failure I let him go at the right time. With my second one, I kept waiting and hoping she would get better and I know I waited too long, I was in such pain because of of it. I held onto her for selfish reasons. I made a promise to myself I would never do that again.

Oh Denise, it is one of the hardest things in the world to decide and do. My prayers are with you. It took me a while to get over losing my 15 year old friend. You go through so much with these dear creatures and it is hard to let go. If he is suffering though you have to think about your options. Maybe have an open honest discussion with the vet. I know many of us are thinking about you and praying for you.

The SQ fluids should help your baby feel better. Dehydration is your enemy renal failure. I know the SQ helped my Zoey in her renal failure fight and made her feel better. When was the renal failure diagnosised? Your pup should be on a renal diet. Also may need a phosphorous binder as well as other supplements. LadyJane has experience too with renal failure- It would not hurt to PM them for help, too.

An appetite stimulant may help your pup to eat too. I would ask the vet about it.

I know someone who recently lost their baby to kidney failure. She was able to prolong his life with diligent treatment and research. Here is a website that she belongs to. I recommend you join, as there is a wealth of information here. Good luck.
