Rant/Vent! Hey y'all, I've been on this site for a few months now & have gotten some great advice from many of you but one thing that irks me/ rubs me the wrong way is that while y'all are very passionate about yorkies you tend to forget that some of us are new owners & do not like getting a lashing over the computer because of a brand of food we chose to feed our pet. What if that's the only food someone could afford? Yes I did feed my yorkie Jaxson Purina when I first got him because that's what the vet recommended to me but after further research I found that it wasn't the food for us. Along with that research I saw that lots of foods many yorkie owners talk about on also on the FDA recall list for whatever reason. People come on here to seek communicate with other owners & if you have an opinion give it but remember some of us are new to this & don't deserve to be chewed out basically because we bought the wrong food. So before telling me shame on you for feeding your pet purina and supporting that company maybe you should think back on when you first got your yorkie or any pet & if you made a mistake? How about what you eat? Most of these yorkies probably eat healthier then their owners do but yet I'm getting bashed with private messages. Sorry had to vent....I'm an Army wife whose husband got her a yorkie a few months ago & found this site to get info & talk to other owners but instead I find myself getting chewed out. ....End vent... |
I am sorry you feel the way you do. I can tell you I didn't do research before I got my sweet Georgie and definitely didn't feed him what I should have. Here's what helps me....I listen to the positive people here and others I simply ignore its difficult I know. As far as people pm'ing you not so nice messages I would let admin know that's not right for people to do. Stick around there's a lot of great people here. Glad you are a member too:) |
I'm so sorry you are being treated poorly. I have seen the behavior you describe and it is very disheartening to see. If members are harassing you via PM, report those PM's to the Admin. I'm sure they would not want that to be happening. And congrats on your little one!!!!! |
So sorry you had a bad experience...sometimes it's so hard to read other's very opinionated post(s) w/out reading into it so much. It can simply be their way of expressing their opinions & that's just it. It also varies muchly on your's & mine personal mood that day...I hope you've learned & continue to learn (I sure am!) as much as you can for your beloved yorkie. Sending you comforting hugs. |

As you have probably already figured out...us yorkie people are VERY passionate about this breed...I have been here for a long time...seen many a post go bad! seen many "old" members leave...(wish they would come back)..anyway...this is a learning forum...some do come on here and think they know what's best for all....well what's best for one is not necessarily best for another. Don't get upset and take what is said with a grain of salt. Sometimes people think they are helping but, the way it is said sounds like bashing...if you are getting "bashed" via PM, you can forward that to one of the mods. NOBODY should be getting bashed for what they feed their pups! You are a new owner and are here to learn...not get reprimanded for what you are doing. |
Hi! I am so sorry you received comments that were unappreciated. I understand how you feel, and while I did not see the thread or comments you referenced, I am afraid there is no consensus what the 'right' food is for a dog. I also agree there is no reason to be rude or inconsiderate regarding food (or any other subject)...it is very difficult to find the food that 'works' nutritionally and medically for a particular dog and monitarily for its owner. I also am familiar with Fort Hood, having lived in Copperas Cove with a DH stationed at Fort Hood...and, of course, I am familiar with the pay and Commissary options. The only advice I would offer regarding dog food would be to read labels, research ingredients, and get the cleanest, most nutritionally appropriate food you can reasonably afford. This will save you in the long run since, hopefully, your dog will be healthier...but it is not a guarantee, since there are many factors involved. Congratulations on getting your Yorkie. I hope you do not judge all who frequent YT due to comments already given. There are many here who are very supportive, and since it is often not properly conveyed in written words what was meant by the writer, heart-felt or emotionally, the possibility exists that some skewing of intent occurred between the brain and the keyboard...on any side of an internet router. :p Please do stick around...I only speak for myself, but you may find you are not as disappointed in the future by YT'ers as a whole. {{{Hugs}}} |
I have to say it is very sad but, it is a very common practise by too many members here on YT and very disturbing to some degree. What a shame that some of them feel the need to always stir up conflict. It just never ends! Some just go way beyond just stating the facts its like they have the need to always being surrounded by drama. And yes those member who are sending harrassing PM should be reported. I think there may even be a way to ban a person from veiwing or comenting on your posts. You might want to check that out thou Im not for sure. |
Yea one thing to have debates ,options whatever on the forum. But private messages get personal. If they are harsh. Sometime ppl do private so they won't seem rude maybe?? Nobody else can read them. Dunno imo this is just a forum. I probably sound harsh all the time. But to me it doesn't seem like it and am not trying to be. Just can't let thing bother you. But I have alligator skin not everyone does. |
I fed my yorkie the "wrong" food when I got her, going off the suggestion of my breeder....read how bad it was and then talked to my vet within a few days of getting her and did change her food then.....I read what people say on YT, do my own research, and go from there! Basically, take what you need and like, and leave the rest...whatever works best for you and your baby! |

If I haven't already welcomed you - consider yourself welcomed. AND thank you for your family's service to our country -- his serving in the Army and you being his helpmate. You are absolutely right - everyone of us had to start somewhere. At one time we all knew absolutely ZERO about Yorkies. Some of us studied and learned before their first yorkie came into their life. I am one of those who learned as they went. Back in 1993 the information highway was a 2-lane backroad so I bought books, and studied, talked to my vet, etc. I am still learning - everyday I learn something new. The day I stop learning will be the day that I am scattered in the wind. |
Sorry about the negative responses and pm's, just hang with us, we are all learning and we all have one thing in common, we love our furkids...(((HUGS))) |
Welcome to YT, if I am late on my welcome I am sorry. I will tell you a funny story about one of my early experiences with Yorkie Talk; I had posted about what a hard time I was having potty training Sophie Kate and how I could not get her to tell me when she had to go out. Well one of the more experience members responded this statement to me "I would suggest you get a newspaper, roll it up and smack YOURSELF on the head for not paying attention to your dog" You know, that kind of shocked me at first and then I found it incredibly funny. I am sorry if you feel some members were not nice in the way they delivered their message (hopefully I was not one of them). I think most of us try very hard to be polite to new Yorkie owners (we all were one once). Please stick around, keep posting and hopefully you will not have anymore bad experiences. |
Welcome to you and your little fur Jaxson. I am pretty new too. Sometimes it is hard. You say something and it starts a firestorm ;). There are so great people on here that have truly been helpful to me on my search for a puppy. I have learned a lot. Hang in here. Don't let a few spirited people ruin your time here. I bet even the people that have been here a long time are still learning things. And a big Thank you to your husband and you for service to our country!!!! |
i am sorry you had a bad experience. just remember when you ask for opinions "you are" going to get them. unfortunately some will not be as tactful as they should be. just take what you want from the advice and leave the rest. Yorkie talk is a wonderful place with many awesome people that have a lot to offer. we all learn something new everyday thanks to each other... |
You will find that everyone here has an opinion about "the best way to feed your dog". You are correct that there have been many times food on here that is highly touted by members as "the best", ends up on a national recall list! You just need to read it all, take notes about what is said, then go to a nutrition site and see what is said about particular additives in dog food....if you are feeding a food that has grain listed as an ingredient low on the list, and your dog is tolerating it, dont worry about it! If your baby develops some kind of allergy or other symptom of "malnutrition", then start looking for a different food! Bright eyes, glossy coat, no itching, sneezing, chewing on feet, good, firm regular stooling, high energy levels,....dont worry about it....your dog eats the food and is enjoying it, be happy...you have found the "right food for YOUR dog". |
I understand your frustration! As I am new here to, but then I started noticing that you can bet when a new topic is posted that there are a handful that I notice on here that are always picking things to death! And sometimes they can't even spell their words correctly! So I have chosen to ignore the bad apples and take their unsolicited advise with a grain of salt! I do so enjoy all the cute pictures and heartwarming stories from members, hang in there! |
"I read what people say on YT, do my own research, and go from there! Basically, take what you need and like, and leave the rest...whatever works best for you and your baby!" I do the same. Read, reasearch, take what I need. There's good advice here, I've found a ton! And good people who love their dogs, heck, all dogs. Back in the day, Purina was the go to food. Everyone used it! If your baby started on it, that's ok. I would if my vet said to. Mine is being a spoiled brat and won't eat anything atm. (at the moment), except ants!(and what I hand feed her).:aimeeyork Just remember, everyone has an opinion...that's all it is, opinion. There is no "bestest in the whole wide world" dog food. If there was, we wouldn't be discussing which food to use with our furbabies!:D With so many dog foods on the market now days that it's overwhelming! Find one your baby likes, and its good for them and go with it :) |
I agree with everyone above, it seems like you already have the right idea. Speak your kind and as others do so, use what u can a disregard the rest. I havent been here long and am no expert at anything yorkie butb i have seen newbies post then head for the hills because they got swatted for coming here new which is the pointvof coming. If I figured I knew everything, I wouldnt have bothered joining. Im glad you ranted. Your baby is too cute. |
I didn't think I bashed you and I know I am not the one sending you pms. I felt that I was informing you there is more to dog food then just the dog food itself and letting you know what that company stands for. I did the same thing to my mom who was feeding the same food. I am sorry people are sending you pms to bash you and I think you should report them. Pming people to bash them about a post is not nice or ok in my mind. |
Anyone receiving attacking/bashing pm's should report them right away. Please don't hesitate to do so. |

Hi Kristen, I read through the posts and it seems most replies were saying STAY, LEARN and SHARE, we welcome you. You are going to get different opinions when you tell a story or ask for advice. Some of us are blunt , others can criticize in such a way, you feel good for just trying. :) YT has many kinds of people, some of us are 'over the top' and not in the least tolerant. IMHO I feel the good far out weighs the negtive. I consider YT one of the most valuable sources of information I have ever found. I encourage you to keep coming back. |

Ok, there are people who lack people skills...My hubby is one. He means well, has the knowledge, but...he can't deliver his message in a good way. I'm hoping that's what happened, but from what I read in the 1st post, I don't think that was the case. :( I'm not judging anyone, not defending anyone either. I just wish you guys didn't have the bad experiences. Please don't let a few keep you from enjoying the many good people here. :) |

"...every childhood dog I ever owned, grew up eating Purine Dog Chow, supplemented with Milk Bone Dog Biscuits...." LOL! Same here! There was NO choice! :animal-pa |
I'm sorry that someone has been sending not-so-nice comments to you via PM:( That\'s not necessary and should be reported to Admin. If your dog is doing well on a food, then that\'s what matters. There are so many to choose from and if you can\'t get your pup to eat a high-quality food well, then what\'s the point? I do hope you won\'t let one bad apple spoil YT for you. Just ignore anyone that makes you feel bad and concentrate on those that are kind:love: |
