| Spaying Question My yorkie puppy is 18 weeks and weighs 1lb 14oz. My vet said most dogs get spayed at about 6 months but I should wait till Pippa is a bit older to see if she loses all her baby teeth so they can pull them at the same time, if need be. My question is, should I also wait until she is a certain weight or is having her spayed before her first heat crucial? |

| I got great advise on the same question here . My vet agreed with the people here who advised me to wait until Kyras growth plates had closed. Which is closer to a year old. The only drawback is we have had to go through her first heat. Good luck with your baby.

| I think waiting till they're older is best.

| I agree that it's best to wait until after the first heat and the growth plates have closed. The link below applies to all dogs, not just canine athletes. It's a fast but interesting read. Canine Sports Productions: Early Spay-Neuter Considerations for the Canine Athlete

| I waited until about 9 months just due to her size.

| Callie got spayed around 9 months and she had not had her first heat but she was also a bit bigger then most yorkies at that age and had any of her baby teeth pulled that where left. I prefer spaying before there first heat but not extremely young.

| I have always spayed or neutered at 6 months, but then I never have had a real tiny dog. Keno was 9 lbs at 6 months, a real teapot yorkie. My Bichone was spayed at 5 months and her weight was 5 lbs at that time. |
