Senior Yorkie Talker | Help!! Please! Been a while since I've been on here but I am in need of some Yorkie owner advice. lol........ So I've had Izzy since she was 8 weeks old, she is now 1 and a half. She has ALWAYS pee'd on her pads, but poops directly in front of the fridge. Up until this point it hasn't really been a huge deal. We tried to train her not too when she was a pup, but she obviously never listened. Anyways were moving in a month and I would really like to train her to use her pads for numbers 1 and 2. What can I do that will train an adult Yorkie to not do something she has always done!????? Thanks for your advice. |

| Adult Yorkies are retrained all the time. Just do what you would do if she were still a puppy. I'd try putting a pee pad down in front of the fridge and praise and reward her with her fav treat when she uses it. Or time when she poos after a pee and put her on the pee pad, again praise and reward with a treat when she's successful.

| Good luck! Just be consistent! If you catch her in the act, take her directly to her pad... If its after the fact, show her and give her a firm NO! I put mine in "time Out" when they are in "trouble". This is the best punishment for them... (and me! I can't stand to look at their sad faces!) also, reward her EVERY time she potties on her pad (whether 1 or 2). This will encourage her to do everything there! My guys get a small treat each and every time we see them "go". They potty then run directly to the treat jar! But, it's worked great!

| It is possible to train an adult yorkie. An old dog can learn new tricks. I got Tatiana when she was three years old. She had lived with her breeder for the first three years of her life, so living with me was something completely new to her. Do you happen to know your yorkie's poop schedule? With Tatiana, I noticed she likes to poop first thing in the morning when we get up, or right after her meals. I have her potty mat inside her exercise pen. The first thing I do when I get up is put her in her exercise pen (and close the gate for a few minutes). Sometimes she poops. Also, I feed her in her exercise pen. After she eats, she goes to the potty mat, and pees and poops. When she's done eating and pottying, I open the gate of the exercise pen, and she walks out. I leave the gate open at all times (when she's not inside for her meals and potty breaks). Guess what? She takes herself into the exercise pen when she needs to potty, and goes on the potty mat. It's become a habit for her. This works for Tatiana. I hope it's helpful to you. Last edited by MidnightUnicorn; 08-04-2012 at 11:02 AM. |

| Oh. One more thing. When Tatiana takes herself to potty by herself, and I notice, I praise and praise her. She gets a lot of petting and gushing. She's happy, and does her happy dance. This helps her, too. |

| I wonder if it would help if you were to put her poopie on the pad, if she happens to do ir somewhere else. It could help her to realize "OH, poopie goes there". Just a thought Good luck

| For my dog in particular I had to have two pee pads in frames. When she has to poo it takes some twirling around and she hates to step on the pee so it is a difficult procedure for her to get the poo on the pad if she has already peed on it. She will pee twice on the pee pad before I change it but the poo is where it gets complicated. I can see her issue so I put the other pad down despite the fact I would rather not have two. |
