Need Advice.. Craigslist Yorkie A friend of mine messaged me about this female yorkie on craigslist. The lady said that she bought her in SC for $700 and that she is pregnant (but the vet couldn't find puppies). She does not know anything about her past and is having money issues. I'm worried about just anybody getting this baby. She is asking $475 for her. She is almost one and a half apparently. What would you do? |
Contact her and ask for pictures. |
And ask lots of questions. |
1 Attachment(s) I have attached the picture she had. I asked her what she knew about her past, she said she knew nothing besides that the lady gave her the parents CKC number. She said she had just got her and took her to the vet and she received a rabies shot. She said the vet did not see any puppies but that it could be too early to tell. I asked about her being bred and she said the previous owner said she was bred to a 5lb yorkie. She knows nothing about her being bred, if she's pregnant, or anything beyond the fact that she just had a rabies shot. She said she gets along with other dogs, but cannot make rent and needs money. I'm not really looking another yorkie at the moment, but I am scared that this poor baby will go to a home and not get medical care or anything. |

I know! She's precious! I can't get her off my mind. But, I know NOTHING about having a dog that could possibly be pregnant. |

Not far from me, in NC. I'm so tempted to go and get her, but i'm not a breeder. If she is pregnant, I wouldn't have a CLUE what to do. |
Here is her response about why she thinks she is def. pregnant. "I just took her to the vet Aug. 1st (and I have record of it) She is very clingy and loving, She doesnt eat a lot, exhausting and will sleep or rest more than normal, her vulva is still swollen, and nipple growth" |
She was bred 3 weeks ago. |
I would take my chances. Your saving a baby that needs a loving home, health and trust me, you wouldn't even regret it once they show how much they love you. My dogs are all spoiled. They get the best of everything and what do they give me in return? Their loyalty, love and companionship. I have no limit on anything for my dogs and If I could, I would rescue all of the other poor babies out there..=) |
I just want to warn you that there are A LOT of craiglist scams out there involving dogs, and do not give the lady any money until you see the dog in person. I hope it's legit, but my mother responded to a craigslist ad about someone rehoming her Yorkie and I made her stop contacting the person because I was convinced it was a scam. |
I would try and get her and then turn her over to a rescue group. |
I'm just worried about her actually being pregnant. I loved Bri's breeder, but we moved away over a year ago and I cannot go to her. I do not know anybody around here who breeds either. Is there a site I could get advice? |

Well, I'm on the other side of the fence... Who looks to rehome a pregnant dog? Seems strange. I wouldn't trust anything the woman says. This dog, if bred could very well have been bred with a larger dog of who knows what kind. You could be looking at a very expensive emergency c-section if you take this on. I hope you've thought about all the possibilities and are prepared to handle them. |

If she IS pregnant, maybe your vet could handle the welp...you'd need him/her to monitor the girl anyway, so any pregnancy would likely show up before she welps. Maybe you could even take her, then find someone else to take her before she welps who is 'qualified' for (comfortable with) welping Yorkies. Lots of options...but first, if this is a REAL situation, you must get her. Otherwise, you must quit worrying, my dear! :D |

I would be getting her if it was me. I'm just a sucker that way. :rolleyes: My worry is that she might get in the wrong hands and end up as byb pup. :(. I guess the big question is would you be able to afford if there were complications with a pregnancy? If the answer is no, maybe you could help find a good home with someone who could. Keep us updated. |
What would you do ? What I would do is not the right question. I often do what my heart says is the right thing, but my poor checking account suffers. I have two loving, giving sisters and many friends that are willing to help out. I even have my grandchildren ask for donations and sponsors. Please do what you have to. It is best to have a rescue on stand by, and make sure they will help, if the dog needs more than you can afford. Please update us when you can. |

I would get her. I would go see her (with someone) and I would not act like I was really impressed. Kind of undecided and then offer her less money. Ask if she has a picture of the sire or a receipt for the stud fee. I would do what I had to do to get her out of there before she gets sold to a backyard breeder that will get as many litters out of her as they can. These little dogs have become a source of income for so many greeders. Please help the poor thing. I'm sure you can find someone to help with the whelping (if she is pregnant) it is really to soon to know for sure. |
LOL so many of you guys think with you heart, me not so much, at $475.00 I don't think of this as a rescue, it's a purchase. My advice is probably to late since you most likely brought her home. She is cute, but since you know very little about her and know that vet expenses are right around the corner I don't think she is worth $475.00 Rescue groups charge about that for a dog, but you get more for your money, because they usually have had them for a while so they can tell you a bit about the dogs temperament, and most importantly they have them vet checked and most of the time are spayed and are up to date on their shots. This expense will all be on you. Since you have another dog if you bring her right home you take the chance of exposing Bri to who knows what. If it's not to late take a breath see if you could talk with her vet and get some records and perhaps go to her vet yourself before paying any money and bringing her into your home. If you already have the puppy, then I wish you all the best. |
