Short Hair or Long Hair? So I need people's opinions on if you think shorter or longer yorkie hairstyles are better. Both have benefits and both look cute so which would you prefer and why? Just curious. |
Depends on the coat type of your yorkie. Cotton coat is hard to keep long. It grows crazy fast but mats easily. Silky is desired and grows way slow but doesn't mat as bad and is smoother. Obviously a short coat is easier to take care of. Depends on how much time you want to spend on grooming each day. Your york is still young, you need to start training him now with grooming. Get him used to you touching is paws esp for nail trimmings and roll him on his back to brush his tummy. My foster Scraps HATES being flipped over and he's a cotton coat, so it's hard to groom him. =/ |
I like short easier to take care of |
Callie is very outside active so short for us but I would like to grow her hair out once when she older and less active maybe. |
I like short on the body & legs, but with a little longer, rounded face. It's easy to maintain, but they still keep that traditional yorkie look we all fell in love with. :) |
I love the long coats but that is why I got a Yorkie is because I love the look. Have some really cute ones in the shorter cuts but have seen some that were longer and real slim that I hated it on so I think its all in what you prefer. Kyras coat takes a little more care as it is thicker but if I condition spray and comb her twice a day we don't get mats. Laddy has the silky coat which is a breeze to care for. |
Short. He's a boy tired of explaining. He's has medical issues short is easier and cleaner with them. He's active. We have three dogs and three kids I'm short on grooming time right now. It's summer. He's cat style cleans himself less. I like confusing people with my Mini Schnauzer and Yorkie both having a schnauzer cut. He stinking hates a top knot. We're redoing the yard again-lots of mud/dirt. |
It really is personal preference, I like long, but then Zoe doesn't mind getting combed. For everyday wear I just put her hair in a ponytail and she doesn't mind at all. Now when we dress up she gets the topknot and I always take it down at night. But Zoe is a silky and it's very easy to take care of, she has never had a mat at all and while she would rather be playing than get combed she is really patient with it too. |
I keep both of my girls short. They are very active, love to play in the yard. We take them in the pool too, so it's easier to rinse the chlorine from short hair. Luna is cotton-coated AND hates to be brushed. I thought about growing Izzy's out, she is silky, and doesn't mind brushing too much. But she'd be full of hitchhikers from the grass on days when it's longer than normal. Plus they look cute:) |
It depends on the dog. My two are super active so during the summer I keep them really short and then grow it out during the winter. Their hair never gets very long and they are comfortable with it. |
I had Miss Priss trimmed before we went to the beach, she has a silky coat and I want it to grow out to see how she will look. She is slender so not sure if it will be pretty, I do love her colors though. I think it is a personal thing, everyone has different ideas and just go with what you like yourself. No matter what they are too stinking cute!!!!! |
Long. Yorkies were bred to have long hair. It's such a glorious feature, why would you then cut it off? |

I love the long hair too. But with 4 in full coat I decided to cut Cali down to a puppy cut. She is much happier and so am I. She looks pretty in a long coat and cute in a short coat. 2 of mine have silky coats so they are easy to take care of. Roxie has a cotton coat but I don't think she would look good in a puppy cut but I have thinned out her coat a lot to make it easier on her. |

You should see ZoE after she's run though the back yard in Autumn with all the fallen leaves....I didn't know a coat could possibly hold so many! And I agree picking them out isn't much fun, but she so thoroughly enjoys running & jumping in the leaves that I don't the heart to stop her. Long hair with clothes definately requires alot more brushing.... before clothing goes on and immediately after clothing coming off, along with the regular daily grooming. But, I still LOVE A LONG COAT :D |

Foe me I love the long coats. I feel that is what makes a yorkie look like a yorkie. I've never cut any of mine down. I have one with a VERY thick coat he's like washing a bear, I brush him once in the morning and he's set for the day. Besides he's a bit long in the body so if I did cut him down he'd look like a wiener dog.... ;) At one time I had four boys, they all had long coats and they all had ponies too, I don't mind but I can see why someone would cut theirs down. |
My cotton coat is short, my silky coat is semi long. They are both active outdoors, so realistically I should keep them both short. The longer-haired one is a relative mess about six days a week. I have to clean her up for therapy dog visits once a week. But I've resisted because she looks SO GOOD after grooming. Makes for great pictures. |
I have had several kinds of long haired dogs. I always say I will never have another but then......I get another! My Shih Tzu had a huge thick coat. I kept it long for about half of his 15 years. It was a lot of work but he was just so gorgeous in full coat. I do love the look of a long haired dog and I guess that is why I have always been attracted to them. When I was working full time and had kids it was a challenge keeping up with the coat. If people are not dedicated to the upkeep of long hair then they should be dedicated to getting the dog groomed regularly. Gracie has a nice silky coat. I now have time to groom her and she has learned to accept her daily grooming. (sometimes more than daily) It is something that requires the right tools and products to keep the coat looking good and tangle free. I think that truly she would have preferred to be born a smooth coated Jack Russell Terrier but she is still just as much of a little character in her long hair as she would be in short hair. Long or short the coat does require regular work and if a person does not want to be bothered with that then they might want to consider a short coated breed instead. |
I keep Raley's body very short, legs fairly long and head/face/beard medium. He has silky hair. |
I adore both, but for us a shorter cut is a bit easier. Katie Scarlett has a bit of a cottony coat. I can grow it out and keep it long but it takes ALOT of work. So we cut her short for summer but I am already thinking about growing it again in the winter. I think it really depends on personal preference and lifestyle. If you have the time/money to devote the attention a long coat needs, I'd say go for it. That flowing hair is just gorgeous!!! But the short cuts are cute too! It's so hard to choose for me! :) |
I will soon have two girls and my boy..Orion. Raelle has a silky coat and I keep her hair long, Jersey hasn't come home yet so I have no idea what her coat will be like. I would like to keep it long, but we will see. Orion I tried keeping long....oh boy! He would fight to get the topknot out, and was just a general mess. I think he is a cotton coat, so off to the groomers he went..he's in a puppy coat. Shoot he even goes after Raelle to get her topknot out when I've finished grooming her! She fights him tooth and nail though...I think she likes being all prissied up! LOL! |
I love the long hair. Both of my girls have long hair on the body. Rosie has the long beard and topknot as well. But I keep Mikki's face short. I think the long hair is so pretty. However, I think if you cut it short the pups are still adorable. I believe it is a personal preference. Just know that long hair does require more care. My girls get brushed all the time. |
Just a word of encouragement to those with puppies who want to let the hair grow. My Gracie was as fierce a puppy as I have ever seen. But I started running the comb through her hair (quickly) at least twice a day. By the time she was 7 months old she had become much more tolerant. (Giving a yummy healthy treat when you are done is a great motivation) It is a process of training. The same with the bath. I had to have someone help me hold her when she was younger in order to bathe her but I did it without fail weekly. Guess I finally won. She is 2 now and is so good about baths and grooming. You would never know she is the same girl. The more you do these things the faster they will get accustomed to it and accept it. I also suggest working on basic obedience training with your dog so it knows you are in charge. If you let your dog think it is in charge you have lost the battle. Even if you choose to keep your dog's coat short it is still going to need baths and occasional grooming. Training your pup to get accustomed to being handled is good preparation for the future. If my little terror can learn to behave I'm sure yours can, too. |
I keep Morgan in the puppy clip I have to have him groomed every4weeks |
My yorkie has been in a short hair all his life (he is almost 3), but I would love to grow his coat because they look adorable. He is mostly silky so I know he's a good candidate, however, the reason I keep him short is that he has been suffering from itching from unknown causes. It wouldn't be fair for him to grow his coat now and give him a harder time as I don't know if it's fleas or other parasites (he is on a strict flea preventative but still). So, identify your yorkie's coat type, them determine how much time you want to spend grooming. |
Troy has very straight hair. But I like it kept short because I lead to busy a life to maintain the longer hair. I like the long hair but I just think it's just too much for me and my family. What's cuter or functional depends on the family and their individual preferences. |
Roxy is kept long. Cozy and Lucy get medium length puppy cuts. RIP Zoey got short and sassy. |
1 Attachment(s) Ally has a silky coat and I keep her hair long. Tia has a cotton coat and looks absolutely beautiful with long hair, but I've trimmed her hair (short/medium....not shaved) because of the matts. We comb every day and it became just torture for her so I trimmed it to make it easier for her. So....I have one of each. |
