In Washington State, and particularly in my county, we have had several incidents of rabid bats, making it even more imperative to have our pets vaccinated against rabies if we allow our pets outside at all. I also did not know of any concerns with the rabies vaccination and Yorkies (my first baby arrived on May 25 at 8 weeks old, another ignorant decision on my part, but turned out great and he was removed from the mother at just 6 weeks anyway). My Kipper was given the rabies vaccination when he was not quite 2# and 3 months old and it was with his other vaccinations. He had absolutely no reaction, so I feel very blessed. If I had known some of these concerns before I allowed the vet to administer the shots altogether, I would probably have opted to space them out, as recommended by more knowledgeable Yorkie owners. It is very difficult for me to read many of the posts on YorkieTalk because I become very fearful that my baby will have something bad happen to him, too. Now I realize that I can learn from the posts and use the information to safeguard my puppy without becoming paranoid or overprotective. My little Kipper now weighs a healthy 3.9# at 16 weeks old and is normal in every way. |
