Lilo Kahlua is finally a therapy/agility dog

Congrats Lilo! Way to go. You will love therapy dog work. It is very rewarding. Heidi and i have been doing it for a year and a half. I also wanted to take agility but our training center requires that you take novice 2 obedience first and the class was filled last go round. She's 3 yrs now though & getting to be a good couch potato, so i hope we can still do it. They are so much fun aren't they!

I'm sure you can still do it! it takes work but if you want ti enough even an old dog learns new tricks and Heidi is still quite young!

Oh she can do it, I have no doubt. She is active and I still work on teaching her new tricks, and she does great at it. I think she wouldn't have the motivation to want to run. She's become more of a social butterfly and wants every to pay her attention. LoL I'm going to try anyway....

its ok.. im pretty sure lilo would never beat anyone in a real competition. shes really small and its hard at times to motivate her to go faster, Little legs can't really cover that much ground. LOL the best part is the bonding and they learned to get excited for the run. Lilo always wants to go again after running the course once.

yeah Lilo, you are such a cute little smart cookie and congrats to mom, all the hard work is paying off. I have to agree with the gal that said she was one of the most focused dogs she has seen. I thought that when I watched the video of her when one of her friends came over to play. The other dog was all over the place but you could see Lilo, would have nothing to do with the dog, she just went through the course like no other dog was around, it was almost like she was thinking you silly dog get out of my way so I can do this right. I show that video to a lot of my friends to prove how well some little dogs can focus and take direction. Perhaps you could post that video here so people know what I mean.

How did you get started with therapy training? I want to do that with Lucy. Did you go through the AKC?

We have private companies that do the training here - but it's very expensive.

If you did the competitive agility she would compete against small dogs anyway. She may do great! I heard Yorkies can do really good in it. Go Lilo!

Well here you can train your dog your self also but there are also places nearby that hold classes. Usually they make you take other obedience classes first.

Ive been training LILO myself for a very long time now. We tested for her CGC first when she was 6 months old and then wait to take her therapy test because you can take it only after they turn 1, so we scheduled it a few days after her birthday.

The akc doesn't really have a training program but they have started a program where you can earn an AKC therapy dog title after completing 50 visits. (that's LILO's next goal.) We decided to register and test with therapy dogs international but you can look local therap dog organizations near you online since each hospital accepts different registrations. You should also take the CGC first since it helps a lot with the preparation for the therapy test

How long did it take you to train Lilo? I'm working on "sit" and can't seem to get Lucy to do it. She gets board with the process and just walks away - no matter what the treat! I've watched instructional videos over and over and nothing is working.

Oh well, Lilo looks fantastic, however.
