I suppose I just assume people won't be daft enough to feed that rubbish to a much loved pet. I ment the choices of decent nosh lol. What is Ol Roy?

Many people are uninformed enough that they feed their dogs the cheapest food they can find in Walmart or some pet store. I cringe when I see those shopping carts with the huge bag of cheap dog food wheeling down the isle. While a healthy dog can survive several years on this type of feeding there is a deluge of diet related diseases ravaging our pets. Heart disease, diabetes, cancer, obesity are killing beautiful pets at a much younger age than a dog would normally die.

My dog refused to eat any form of kibble as a puppy. There are well intentioned people who told me to let her starve herself because when she got hungry enough she would eat. Well, that may be true but I believe that dogs are a bit smarter than we give them credit for. Anyone will eat just about anything if they are starving even if it is something they ordinarily hate or even if it is something very bad for them. I did not want to force her to eat something that she did not like or may have been bad for her.

I agree that there are no "perfect" dry dog food formula out there. People have to make the decision based on what they find to be most important to them about their pet's health and diet. We are feeding Gracie a commercial grain free raw diet. It is a bit more complicated to obtain and feed but I feel really confident that they are quality ingredients in her food. She loves it and is doing very well on it.

If RC is working, I would leave your pup on it. I fed it to Maddie for a while and she started being itchy all the time. I thought it was her food so we went to grain free and it helped. I was pleased with RC other than that, I mean she ate it and I was able to find it locally unlike most the "top" food brands.
A healthy food that works for you and your pup is what is best for you.

It is one of the favorites around here. I sometimes wonder why anyone would do that do their pet but it shows how much trust Americans put in commercial products. Even human processed and some fresh foods have become dangerous in their content.

Poor Ol' Roy

I hate to think of what kind of an end he came to!

Oh man! Before I moved away from home and got my own puppy and did craploads of research, my family was a big time purchaser of Kibbles n Bits!! *GASP* And our older yorkie ate almost exclusively Cesar's wet food! After picking a puppy food for Toki, I called my sister and helped her pick new foods for our family dogs back home.

It's not a good excuse but most people don't do as much research and if their dog will eat the Beneful, they keep on buying it. I try do as much research and read as many reviews as possible before I make any kind of major purchase (not just for dog-related items) but I think dog food is just one of those area where there are so many options and people don't want to do the research and just select something based off commercial campaigns and looks.

I compare those pet foods you see on TV (Kibbles and Bits) to breakfast cereals. They have a great ad campaign but their product is poison. Yes, it can sustain life for a while but at what cost? They add those synthetic vitamins but that is not how the body was designed to assimilate nutrition and the end result is disaster.

People need to stop using the mainstream media for information and educate themselves. However, that is how Americans have been raised. They depend on a media gone haywire for vital information.

i completly understand the choices of dog food people make due to an economical point of view but i also think
that if a person can't afford to feed a good quality food to their pet (cat or dog)
,which you can get at a reasonable price, than they should not even have a pet. Especially when you think of all the other expenses that come with caring for a pet..

am i wrong ?

I think if you consider the vet bills that a person faces when their dog develops a cancer or other debilitating illnesses that result from feeding these foods the financial aspect is something to consider. They may save money on pet food but they will eventually pay more at the vet's office.

exactly, in the long run it just pays to feed good food.
Just like for people , if we eat junk we run into health problem...

Mhmm! I agree!

After 7 years of our beagle being on any combination of Kibbles n Bits and Beneful, I finally had my parents switch her to Blue Buffalo. She was so much better off after a couple of weeks. She doesn't lick her paws nearly as often as she used to and her coat is so soft and shiny.

My parents have spent so much money over the years taking her to the vet because she had so many issues with allergies and reactions to foods she shouldn't have been eating...a lot of this is from feeding her table scraps (which my own pup never gets) along with environmental allergies. I think a lot of people don't realize that dogs don't have the same nutritional requirements as people. I have the exact same argument with my family every time I come home to visit about how I don't want them sharing bratwursts, heavily seasoned fajita meat, or sugared up chewy granola bars with my pup.

Diet is one thing that owners have control of and it just seems like the most elementary way to prevent future health problems is to pick a quality food. I don't think that people who feed their pets terrible food love their pets any less but it's unfortunate that it takes major health problems with their dogs before they have to have the vet tell them to re-evaluate the diet and better educate themselves.

i do/ my female jack russell and MY female papillion has been on it for the last 4 years and Morgan has been eating it since we brought him home// i have not had any problems with it

Does any one feed Flint River Ranch? I see that it supposedly is made fresh weekly, and has no preservatives..curious if any one has been feeding it long term. It is an order only..not carried in the stores.

If your baby has not experienced any issues with RC, why switch??? It is one of the few that has not been recalled, they have a super quality management program at RC...everyone has their favorite dog food, but I have fed RC with excellent results for many, many years....no problems, real or imagined, at all!
