Need ideas for keeping cool

If a window unit is put in properly there are no holes or escape spots for animals. You cannot have holes or the hot air comes in the house!

That's the problem, I've never seen one properly designed for windows that open side to side, only up and down, that's why it won't work for my house. I could make it fit in the window, but I couldn't properly secure it with no gabs so the hot air couldn't come in and cats couldn't get out.

I am sure a handyman could put something around it...wood or something. There is always a way. They do also make a/c's for those type windows. I don't know where people buy them, but I have seen them.

I rent this house, so it can't be a permanent thing. I've asked at the home improvement stores, and none of them had anything that vented out the window - I just need something temporary and portable, not a window unit.
