Tattoo's, on dogs

Yes, tatts on dogs not OF dogs, your opinion please, every year when the new lists of most favorite dog goes out ours are right up there on top, no great surprise to us of course, BUT, it makes them a target for theft, even more so than they already are. Now I read somewhere, probably here, about tattooing your dog with his or her male/female symbol with a big slash through it showing that they were neutered. And this MAYBE would help keep them from being stolen for breeding. I have thought of this as I have a tattoo artist who would do this for me even though he thinks I'm crazy, as in crazy dog lady. This is not the kind of thing to be done at the vet but by an artist and only takes a couple of minutes, outline only. Oh, the tatt is about the size of a quarter so it will not "bleed down", size could be adjusted and on his inner thigh. The meds are just the same as you and I would put on our tatts, vaseline type something from the pet dept though cause Sprocket would lick if he could. You know the drill. Thoughts please.

Ok well my thought on this is that why would you put your dogs through all of the trouble and pain of getting tatted for the purpose of identifying them if stollen. If in fact they are, god forbid, rarely do people get there pets returned to them.

Lost sure, possibly but stollen probably not!

My family breed rabbits and several breeds of dogs when I was a kid. We had our animals including the dogs tatted with our initials using an ear punch tatto kit like the one below.

When I was a tech there was a Tat shop rite next door so on the occasion that someone wanted a tat on their dog , we sedated the dog & the guy came to us from the Tat shop. It worked out great for the dog & the artist. They were done mostly on the inside of the ear.

Peek A Boo has a tat on his lower abdomin, but it's a number preceded by a letter, and more for ID than anything. He already had the tatoo when I got him, so I can't say how much it hurt. That sounds like a good idea though.

Before microchipping some show breeders would tattoo dogs for identification purposes, and I believe there are a few breeders that still do. This is done when the pups are very young, like with tail docking and dew claws.

If you feel like your dog needs a tattoo please have the vet do it with proper anesthetic. It is a painful procedure.

My Mom has a Jack Russell Terrier that was tattoed with an ID number on her inner thigh. It was done when she was spayed so she was asleep.

OH My Gosh!! I can just imagine the dog snatcher standing there sorting thru the dogs to snatch only the dogs without a tattoo!!!! Very Clever!!

Maybe an easier solution -- Place a sign on the fence area where you keep your dog that says "Warning!! Killer dog has been spayed!!!"

I don't know about that- Do you really think someone that is going to steal your dog is going to look them over for a Tattoo, and if the dog has a tattoo showing that it is neutered how is the theft going to know that is what the tattoo means? Also they can still sell the Yorkie if he is neutered- They are scum bags

I remember several years ago there was a huge problem with dog thieves that made money by selling dogs to labs. They would take any kind of dog. People started tattooing their pet's ears. However, it was too easy to sell a dog missing an ear so they had to move the site to the belly.
It is just had to believe the kind of low life that wanders our streets.

Thanks for the input guys, I agree scum bags would do anything, I like the killer dog idea even though he doesn't look much like a killer dog, LOL and we all have had people who have asked WAY to many questions about "how cute etc" our babies are and me be the suspicious person I am, or maybe over protective. But anyway, I was just looking to an idea that MIGHT work and about the pain part, it's a rub on anesthetic type, like for your teeth and takes almost no time for the work, of course your artist has to have a very light hand, but you have a pro who does that type of thing daily, on people and there is something to be said for that kind of skill. BUT I am just a worry wort, being responsible for something so special makes that happen you know what I mean. Crazy dog lady that I am. Anyway I asked for your input, THANK YOU.
