Average cost of....? I think this would be a great thread for perspective new owners looking to take on a Yorkie. It would give them a good idea how much beyond the cost of the dog they're looking at. So, out of curiosity, how much do you pay for the following: * Checkup/ initial vaccinations * Spay/Neuter (specify * Dental cleaning * Dental extractions (ie: baby teeth) * Annual wellness checkup and boosters |
Puppy shots and visits $200 and some odd dollars per dog Dentals 200 per dog Neutering and spaying I spent $110 for neuter and $140 for spay 6 yrs ago Annual shots/heartworm test/wellness bloodwork $210 per dog |
I did a thread like this where I added up everything I've spent. Whew! http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...vet-costs.html In 3 years, I spent over $4000 on vet bills, check-ups, things of that nature. And he's been a pretty healthy dog, it's just the few things he needed done cost a LOT. Let's not even add in all the stuff I've spent on collars, harnesses, toys, food, etc. lol. |
Off the top of my head, wellness checkup is $80per office visit. This doesnt include any bloddwork, heart worm tests, urinalysis, or boosters. His neuter costs $300+ including all pre-op, pain meds, I think I even asked for a urinalysis. I don't remember. His dental was just under $300. It's my fault really I didn't keep up with the regular maintanance. We are now. :) Those pearly whites are staying pearly and white. |
Also, the what if's, need to be strongly considered before getting a pup. Example....Zhoie's AAI, that alone was several thousand dollars. Plus all the regular care costs you all have stated above. We never know when we get a pup, if something major will occur...however, a person does need to ask themselves and be honest with themselves....if that should happen, can I provide the proper medical treatment and care to this pup. If not, don't get the pup...it's just not fair to the dog. |
That was a great post I usally spend about 90 per vet visit at least twice a year I spent about 150 for spaying It cost about 160 just for dog food that was with only 2 dogs last year I spend abou 200 for teeth cleaning I spend about 250 on heart worm pills / flee and tic protection/ and other medication ER I don't use boarders any more due to a bad experience but figure at least $30 per day per dog and extra if they are there over the weekend dog sitters cost even more I spend about 200 to 300 for toys and outfits and other accessories I spend about 40 a year for potty pads thank you Costco. I spend about 45 a year for grooming products If you use a groomer expect to spend about 60 to 100 per dog per visit. I now do not use them any mor i learned how to cut their hair and do the grooming myself I usally plan for a minimal cost of 300 for sick visits and ER care I know I am am forgetting something here! I figured with just the basic care it will cost you about 1000 per dog not counting grooming, boarding, or ER visits. It is a huge expense if you provide just basic care |
Yes theres also the cost of heartworm and flea preventative every month |
Yearly at a minimum for each pup: Wellness bloodwork plus heartworm - $60 (more done if indicated) Urinalysis - $47 Fecal - $25 Heartworm preventative - $55 Exam/office call is probably about $50 (several times a year for a lot of dogs) Things that may easily come up: Vaccines - $20 to $40 each (protocols vary) Urine culture - $157 Xray first view - $80 Xray second view - $40 Cytology for ears - $17 Meds - average $20 to $60ish each Dental - $200 for stage 1 Skin scraping - $20 Spay/neuter $125 to $600 plus bloodwork Then less commonly: Bile acid test - $100 Endoscopy - $1000 Pancreatitis treatment - $100 to several $1000 Specialist consult $100 - $250 Ultrasound - $250 Oral surgery/adult extractions - $400 to $1200 MRI - $1000 to $2000 Back surgery - $4000 to $7000 Luxating patella surgery - $750 - $1500 per knee CCL tear surgery - depends on type - $1500 to $2500 Leg amputation - $1000 Surgery for broken bones in limbs - $1000 - $5000 Aural hematoma - $100 Cystocentesis - $0 to $50 Anal saculectomy - $1000 Emergency fee - $80 |
* Checkup/ initial vaccinations - $140 and $90 * Spay/Neuter (specify - boy $535, plus $80 for removing baby teeth * Dental cleaning - buy a product called Leba III it costs $74 and lasts for ever * Dental extractions (ie: baby teeth) see above * Annual wellness checkup and boosters - $135 per dog at old vet, just changed and will only be doing titer tests going forward to check if vaccines are required as well as getting the rabies Doggy bank account $100/month Raw food and supplements - $92/month treats - $20/month Grooming I do myself |
I just know it is expensive to properly care for any breed of dog or animal. Anyone thinking about buying or rescuing do need to know that it's expensive and it can be heartbreaking in some cases. But the love and devotion out way all of the costs. |
Omg I can not even begin to add this all up. 6 dogs, initial vet visit 40.00 times 6 Spay and neuter 85.00 times 6 heartworm , flea meds 90.00 per month thats for all 6 dog food for one month is 176.00 office visits for check ups 40.00 times 6,,,not including any extras that may be needed Lets talk Grooming,,,,I am lucky and found a great groomer who does all 6 of my dogs for 120.00 and this is every 6 to 8 weeks. Sadie needs meds for seizures and they are 20 bucks a month. and just think of all the little things that add up to so much, Collars, leashes. bowls. beds. clothes (for some of us ). dog shampoo and smell good sprays lol, treats, toothpaste, toothbrushes, bows for their hair and so on and so on. Yall know two months ago Sadie had to spend the night at the hospital, that little visit cost Momma 600.00. It is very expensive to keep a dog let alone 6 of them. |
Oh and I forgot those lovely once a year dentals that cost 85.00 It never ends |

Lebalab Inc Awesome is what they are Dog Dental Care | Pet Oral Hygiene | Cat Tooth Cleaning Product Check them out. Petzlife is for less stained and plaque covered teeth but Leba is for more severe situations. Like if you rescued a dog and it had some uncared for dental |
Even with brushing an still eating kibble at the time Teegy was still getting buildup on his back teeth. When I took him for his annual checkup in December my vet said I can clean those. I said I'll find something don't worry. He said there is nothing commercially available that works well. You can order stuff through me or put him on a special dental diet. I said absolutely not. I don't want that chemically engineered food in my dog. I said how much for a cleaning. He said $900 I won't repeat what I said to him. By the power of the Internet I found these. When I switched vets in February of this year and explained the many reasons for the switch, she said his teeth are fantastic keep doing whatever you are doing |
Tibbe has got about $2800.00 in vet bills so far this year. Last ER visit charge was $95.00, x-rays $138.00, lab $250.00 for one panel plus lesser dollars for other tests. His pneumonia bout itself was probably $1700.00 as he saw two different vets, on the ER vet with overnight hospital stay, IV's, meds, cardiac specialist since the first vet thought his heart was greatly enlarged, 3 different sets of chest x-rays - the 3rd 3 weeks later to check for clear lungs, cardiac Doppler, etc. Then his Wellness Plan is probably $495.00 plus anal sac expression, this & that. His recent apparent fall in the night involved 2 visits ER vet visits, x-rays, those blood tests & approaching $600.00 probably. I do kind of prefer taking him to the ER vet as they have every piece of equipment needed to do just about anything & you don't usually have to go elsewhere. And they are used to dealing with critical dogs all the time so I like to take him there now just in case he should go south or something if he reacts to some medicine given at the vets or his condition is something a routine vet can't handle. Expensive though. |
Great thread.... I can't remember off the top of my head the costs for a couple of things but I can say the following: Dental cleaning/tooth extraction- $466 (just had this done a couple of weeks ago) Wellness exam office visit-$60 w/ vaccinations (which vaccines should be spaced out in the best of interest of the furbaby) For the first 2 years Georgie was at the Vet regularly either he wasn't eating, had diarrhea, you name it. We didn't take any chances so we took him in which cost $80+each time depending on meds & diagnosis. I would say approx. every 3months or so. It turns out he just had a sensitive tummy. Last year we spent 8k alone for Vet visits, neuro specialists and AAI surgery. I want to stress the importance of all the above when considering a Yorkie. I can't say my husband and I thought about all of it, but we would do it all over again if we had to for our sweet boy. We have spent less than half on our Boxer who is 6 years older than Georgie. BTW we will be getting another Yorkie because the love we have for him and vice versa totally outweighs the cost;) From a reputable breeder this time! |
WOW!!!! I had no idea the amount I'd be paying initially when I got my little one. Spent a fortune just getting set up between crates, puppy gates, puppy pen, travel carrier, toys, clothes and bows that every Princess MUST have, lol, grooming supplies, etc. Not to mention all the vet costs. Some of this will slow down and yes I too have started a puppy fund! |
I will check this out thank you |
i've lost count.... |

so have I and I'm only 2.5 years into it.... lol I'm pretty sure I've spent over $3000 in emerge fees for allergies and irritable bowel disease stuff this year alone, plus all the food I've bought and wasted... General exams here are $65 Antibiotics or metronydozol or other meds for tummy upsets... I'd say $20-60 for a dose for a 5lb dog. Revolution $96 for 6 months I think Massage therapy for luxating patella... $30 per hour I don't remember the neuter and dental costs, but don't forget the retained buggers, I mean baby teeth, they cost a lot too. Oh and MOST importantly, I pay $28 per month for my insurance! it's a neccessity for me. |

This is a great thread. I wish people would consider the cost before jumping into getting a dog (of any breed!). I know that no matter what, we are covered financially for our two... but I know a lot of people who would not be able to afford it if an emergency arose :( |

It is amazing how different costs can be because of location. For me it is $45 for a checkup. $34 heartworm test I do my own vaccines, so $100 a year Rabies $15 every 3 years Revolution: $54 for 3 months Spay: $230 this is the cheapest around here Dental: $200-$300 depending on how good or bath teeth are but I also clean their teeth my own, I just take them in if they need pulled or in bad shape, so not too often Bile acid test: $110, I usually get these done once when they are a year old or younger Dog food: $100 each month |

Brownie has the worst teeth I have ever seen. Despite regular dentals, brushing his teeth daily, additives, and me scaling his teeth, he will most likely lose all of his teeth. The vet said I was doing everything possible, it's just not something that can be helped with him. Destiny on the other hand has great teeth. 6 years old and never had a dental and still doesn't need one. Genetics plays a huge role in teeth. |
