| Welcome to YT. It is a learning curve with Yorkies, you already know about the terrier temperment and it is wondderful that you are already a 'dog person' . I too started out with other breeds and after my first Yorkie I was hooked for life. I am so glad you found YT. My best advice is read past posts about subjects that interest you. I have had Yorkies for over 30 years and I still learn something new on YT all the time. I hope you will enjoy sharing stories, pictures and ideas with us. Training and Behavior is my thing, so I love getting health information from this site. Some members are more up to date and know more, than some Vets. and know who and where to go for help.

| Thank you all for making me feel welcome. I was a little apprehensive when I made my first post because I have a mixed breed and the schnuazer world wasn't as kind as you all have been. My girl schnauzer, Muffin, was pure white - a disqualifying fault of the schnauzer breed standard, although the AKC still allowed her to be registered. I competed with her in obedience and honestly, you'd have thought I'd brought a cat to a dog show for the dirty looks and rude comments we got from alleged dog lovers. Someone actually told me I should be ashamed of myself and her and that a decent breeder would have destroyed her at birth for her color. I became leary of purebred clubs and groups after hearing comments like that at show after show after show. My little yorkie/maltese mix is doing wonderful. He's been with me seven weeks today and he's hardly the same petrified little dog I carried out of the shelter. He's an amazing little guy and the more relaxed and confident he grows, the more wonderful he is. I only wish I was the one to get him as a puppy so I could have prevented him from what ever horrors he knew in his first three years. (I can't even begin to imagine what someone had to do to him to make him terrified of trash!) I take him every where I can so that he can meet people, dogs, and have positive experiences to keep boosting his confidence. I'm amazed at how far he's come in such a short time - he couldn't walk on a leash when I met him. Now he heels beautifully, even in crowded urban settings with people, dogs, and distractions galore. I've also noticed how much muscle tone he's developed. Proof this poor little baby never got the excercise he needed. Thank you all for the advice. I will check the various forums to get info on food, grooming, and all the other care that is new to me. The potential medical issues don't really worry me - the schnauzers had similar breed specific ones. I'm a pro on preventing calcium oxalate stones and dental issues from caring for my dear old Stormy. He lived to 16 years old thanks to a good team effort from his vet and me. I have a ton of medical issues myself. We'll deal with whatever happens if it happens and I'll do my best to prevent what can prevented. Right now my focus is learning the best way to care for Benji's coat - his hair is on the cottony side and the mesh harness is matting him terribly. I have good detangler sprays and an assortment of pin brushes, combs (the ones with rotating teeth are my favorite) and luckily, he doesn't mind brushing too much. I have a great groomer whom I trust and Benji took over the schnauzers' standing appointments. I also met a woman who custom makes harnesses and said she lines the yorkie ones in satin to help prevent hair damage. (www.codyscreations.com) I'll be perusing the forums for tips and will post if I get stuck. Thanks again for making me and my little yorkie mix feel like family. |
