| Biting and nipping Hello all. This is my Normans only downfall. He keeps biting or going to bite. Weve tried a whistle and a firm NO... That lasted a day, he now has that YORKIE look.lol... Im sure you know what Im on about. And earlier even tried to get the whistle from around my neck when he was on my lap. He keeps jumping up at me when I am on the sofa and today was actually growling and barking to get my attention. I dispersed that and threw a toy across the room to distract him. He chewed on that for a minute or two. My hubby has bought some spray from pets at home so that he doesnt chew my feet, or the chairs, that seems to have worked so far. But I am worried about this biting lark. Any help would be appreciated. |

| Nip the Nip Sounds like your puppy just gets over excited. Puppies nip each other and play rough. Depending on his age and stage of development here are a few things that may help. 1. After You say a dramatic high pitched Oucheeeeeeeeeeeeeee ! Immediately put him on the floor or turn your back or walk away and ignore for about 5 seconds. He needs to learn 'Never put teeth on people, because they will stop playing. If love bites are not corrected it can lead to real bites that break skin. 2. If he nips while playing say 'Enough" and give him a toy instead of your hand and say 'Good TOY' when he bites the toy. Your cue word does not have to be Enough, You can use what ever feels right for you, like NO, or STOP IT. What ever cue word you use, say the same cue every time. Everyone in your family should use the same Cue words. (I do not like to say No Bite because, then you have to teach a new cue word for barking, rough play, fighting with other pets etc..) Enough is easy to use , and it always means Stop what you are doing right now ! Please do not play tug of war type of games with your puppy. This is too exciting for them, they get in that rip up the prey trance and you may get nipped.

| Oh we dont play tug with him. We just give him his toy and let him get rid of his bitey stage alone.lol He did break my skin the other day. I was trying to get him out of a situation where he could have hurt himself. And looking back on it now, Ive got to stop being so fussy with him. It was me that ended up hurt. I have just wanted a Yorkie for soooo long. I must pull myself back from spoiling him. Hes a very active little man. Always always doing something or another. But when hes tired he sleeps on my lap. or across my front..Never above the shoulders as I am boss. |

| Hi there.. Im not sure if this will work for you but it seemed to work with my Mojo... when he was in his biting/nipping phase, I'd play with him, using my hand to touch his mouth and nose. Ofcourse he will bite and when he does, Id say "ouch!" take my hand away from him and say "No" Id stare at him while he gives me his yorkie look (hehe) Then I start playing with his mouth and nose again.. he'd try to catch my hand ofcourse and whenever I feel his teeth, Id say "ouch" take my hand away and then say "No" after 2-3 times doing this Mojo got the point... Somtimes Id even put my hand against and inside his mouth. If he puts pressure on his bite Id say "ouch" take my hand, say "No" and stare him down again. I did this a few more times, with me initiating the play or inviting him to bite. He doesnt put pressure anymore and whenever he forgets, I just have to do it once and he'll remember that he cant bite down. I hope this technique works for you. |

| PS if your puppy is an adult, I do have a step by step retraining set of lessons. If you need more help just let me know.

| The only thing that worked for us when Callie was a puppy was was a squirt bottle of water and squirt her and say no.
