Crying/Whining under couch So Geno has started in the past few weeks to going under the couch and just crying/whining for at least 15-20 minutes. I look under and say, "come here baby, come geno" but he just continues to cry. I talk to him while he's under there but he still cries. Anytime I go to touch him when he's under there, he hurries up and moves as far away from my hand as possible. I'm not sure if he's just doing it for attention or if something is actually wrong. After about a half hour or so of being under the couch, he'll come out and grab a toy to play or drink some water as if he wasn't just under the couch crying for 30 minutes. He usually does this if I'm watching tv or on my laptop. Occasionally he will do it while we are playing or start to go towards the couch mid-play. Is this normal yorkie behavior? |
Awe poor Geno. How old is he? I wish I could figure out what normal Yorkie behavior is;) I can tell you Georgie leaves the room when we are watching sports he doesn't like the loud noises and being a Steelers fan I tend to cheer a lot during football season:D I would suggest if you feel like something is really wrong take him to the vet otherwise just give him attention and love and he will be fine. |
He'll be one on May 27th. And I know exactly how it is, being a Steelers fan myself. My boyfriend prefers hockey so there is never a lack of cheering with Geno around lol well except for now cause no one in Pittsburgh cares about the Pirates. I thought about taking him to the vet, but I just wanted to make sure I am not overreacting and have it turn out that this is just a common behavior or something yorkies here and there tend to do every now and then. |
Oh goodness I see now you are from Pittsburgh:D I just checked out your albums what a cutie pie;) My nieces Yorkie is 9 and still hides under the couch. It's so hard to figure them out sometimes. I wish they could just tell us LOL |
hahah if only they were that easy! |

I would take him to the vet & have him/her check his neck & back to be on the safe side. I sounds as though something is deff bothering him & could be a certain movement that you are unaware of. |
Corky, goes under the sofas and chairs and will not come out. I think they just need to be alone sometimes. |
are you SURE nothing fell inbetween the cushions and got down in the sofa, perhaps a favorite toy? My dog was under the couch whining for weeks I could NOT for the life of me figure it out.. one night she did it for so long I got up flipped the couch over and discovered her ball and a bully stick had somehow gotten inside the couch and made its way under the springs.. I had to rip the meshy stuff off the sofa and pull them out! |
oh i bet that must be what hes upset about!! check the coach momma!! =*(()) |
i mean couch...! |
I was thinking that too but he goes under both couches and also goes under the couches at my boyfriend's and mom's places. I was figuring he just wanted to be left alone but he's alone all day while I'm at work. He was just at the vet about 2-3 weeks ago for heartworm test and I didn't even think to ask. Could something really be wrong with his neck or back which would cause him to go cry under the couch? |
After he'll stop crying, he'll seem so lifeless under the couch, like he passed out. The one time I stuck my arm under and poked him and he didn't move which is weird cause he usually scurries around when I touch him under the couch. I started freaking out and quickly moved the couch up and over to make sure he was ok and he seemed bounced up and seemed alright. |
maybe you should just call them to talk over whats going on. just to be safe. it might help you feel better and confirm if you should or shouldnt take him in. i hope hes ok and you figure out whats going on. personally i would have brought him already but im a worry wort and call for anything im scared about. |
If this were my pup, he would be going to the vet ASAP. Normally when they want to be alone they just hide they Do Not hide & cry & you say he gets lifeless ? I would be very concerned about that as well. Maybe he's having seizures ? |
oh gosh I didn't even think of seizures. Ugh ok!!! I'm gonna give them a call |

Courtney, I am just seeing your thread now. I pray Geno is okay and that this is just some quirky behavior. Does he do this at certain times during the day, or does he do it close to the time he has potty? Teddy often wants to be held or sit on our laps before he goes to do "big business." :) |

He may be having gas or other G-I, even serious intermittent pain or unknown symptoms such as neurological or others & when it strikes, he goes where he feels safe & gets himself through it. I would definitely have vetted him after a couple episodes of this as possible physical cause is what you have to suspect & worry about first & foremost. Perhaps he's got behavior issues but first check with the vet. If they can't find anything, I would chart his meals, water, treat intake, including chewies, etc., and all his other activities to see if you can form a pattern of this happening within a certain time period of something he eats or does. If there is nothing on x-ray, scans & lab work, you can begin to look into particular sounds or things that are going on in or out of the house when he does this. Does a certain smell of someone opening the fridge, the TV, or starting a car or playing basketball next door or cars coming down the street seem to bring it on? Journal his life for a week or so & try to see if some association taking place in his world is what is causing these possible panic- or fear-related incidents. Finally, if it is behavior related, I would block his access to the area under the couch and treat his whining/crying incidents with whatever treatment method of your choice for fear-based reactions. You can Search out many threads here or Google the subject & read all you can on how to deal with this type of reaction. But first, a vet consult is necessary. I sure hope you can get to the bottom of this as he sounds miserable. I pray he's over this as quickly as possible & you have your healthy, happy baby back very soon. |

He also likes to crawl under my dresser when I'm getting ready for work in the morning but he doesn't whine. He occasionally will crawl under the dresser as well when I dry my hair but I don't blame him. lol |

I can't rememer if it has already been mentioned but video his episodes for the vet if you can. Poor sweet baby - hope the vet can find an easy solution to his problems quickly! |
So I talked to the breeder this morning - she works at our vets office so I felt comfortable getting her thoughts on it before I brought him in. She said to block him off from getting under the couch which I'm going to do tonight. She says to see how he reacts when you close off the couch and if anything, video him so she can see. She said to give her a call in a day or two to update her on it. She mentioned seizuring and obviously we were hoping it isn't that. She said it probably isn't hypoglycemia cause he's a little too old for that and is eating/drinking/peeing/pooping normally. So we're gonna keep a close eye on it for a day or two. Obviously if anything changes, i'll be bringing him in immediately. Thanks for all your input. It helped a lot when answering her questions earlier cause she brought up the same things - seizures, toy under couch, ect. |
Glad you are going to get to the bottom of it. I know the poor little guy will appreciate some help whatever is causing it - it is distressing him. Hope is works out to be something fairly easy to treat or fix. |
So first night I blocked off the couches, he was mad. Then he went under the one end table and cried for a minute or two an then started running from one side of the couch to the other trying to find a way under but couldn't. It got to the point where I just got out of the living room and blocked it off so he couldn't go back in. I've been doing this for the past few days and he seems to be ok about it. When we do go in the living room, he does go between the couch and the end table and lays down. When he does that I leave the room cause he just ends up following me. I'm gonna keep a closer eye on it still but it just is looking to be behavioral at this point. |
