I hope Geno is doing well, they can be quirky little things.

GeorgiesMomma 05-11-2012 06:16 AM

You are such a good Mommy:) It does sound like behavioral. Georgie does things sometimes that I just can't figure out either and he almost 7! Keep us posted on sweet Geno.

Will do! Thanks guys!

Teegy 05-11-2012 08:40 AM

There could me a scent or sound in your home unnoticable to you that is upsetting him. Have you any recollection of changes since it began that could be leading to this kind of stress

courtney1121 05-11-2012 09:31 AM

hmm I don't think so. I haven't used or gotten anything different lately. Or at least anything that I'm aware of. If only dogs could talk, it'd be so much easier! lol

Has the vet checked him out for physical pain?

courtney1121 05-11-2012 10:00 AM

Well I had him at the vet 2-3 weeks ago to get tested for heartworm but he just saw the tech for that. We did see the breeder there and she held him but I forgot to mention at the time about him crawling under the couch cause I know she would have examined him right then and there.

How does the vet check him for pain? I've held him quite often in the past few weeks and he hasn't been uncomfortable or flinching - just him being his typical squirmy self.

When my daughter's dog had a back problem, he would go under the bed and stay there and not come out. I wonder if there is something with your baby that is causing pain. Best wishes and I hope you can get this figured out.

I would have the vet do x-rays. I am not sure anything is wrong but it would definitely ease your mind.

Courtney, do you live in an apartment or a house, I was thinking maybe if you were in an apartment there may be something going on in a neighbours home that is new and affecting your dog. It could be the slightest thing and it may be stressing the poor soul out.
do you have a holistic vet, I ask only because they have a different treatment approach to a situation where there is nothing obvious. If the dog is stressed by something beyond your control often flower remedies (also taken by humans) are the answer. Are they eating and pooping as normal?

If you take a video or present a little journal to the vet when you take him, he will get an idea of what tests to do to see what might be physically wrong, if anything. A whining/crying dog could be hurting or suffering so the vet needs to do some tests & physical exam with palpation, looking for instance for lymph node swelling, nodules anywhere in the body, swollen/irregular anal glands, looking down the throat,head/neck, in the ears/eyes, mouth, back, belly & below, skeletal & neuro systems in his physical exam. Then he will probably x-ray the body for heart/lungs/other organs & skeletal system(usually whole Yorkie body can be done on one film for bones) & draw some blood, maybe even take some urine & stool samples. He'll not be looking for pain, as one can't see or feel it, but you can take a look to see if anything is going on that could be causing it somewhere in the dog. If he finds a tender spine, he may even forego anything but x-rays in the way of testing. Since a dog can only complain but can't explain, checking him out physically would be the first thing to get clear before you try to look for behavior problems. For instance, not to be a downer but as an example of why it is good to get a vet check early when odd behavior starts, if it turned out he had a tumor on is spine & you had been trying to correct his whining with behavior modification, you would just feel terrible. It could be nothing more than his tummy is hurting from something & doc just tries him on different food. Once he's been vet cleared, then you can work on the behavior things. I sure hope he's going lots better very soon. It can be so scary when your little one is just not right.

I do live in an apartment. The guy downstairs actually just moved out a week ago so I don't think it has anything to do with that. I installed air conditioners sometime back in March and you can hear more of outside noises in the living room and bedroom due to them being installed. He doesn't cry or whine in the bedroom though but the bedroom is towards the front of the house and the living room is facing the back but they are right next to each other if that makes any sense. He tends to exhibit this behavior at my boyfriend's place as well and my boyfriend has central air so he isn't using window a/c's. I'm actually wondering if it could be the tv or something. Maybe noises from that. I'll have to test that theory out cause I rarely ever watch tv in the bedroom and my boyfriend and I are always watching tv at his place in the living room as well.

My vet isn't a holistic vet. And he's been eating and pooping normally. He doesn't eat much during the day but that's only cause I'm not home and he tends to sleep a lot during that time. He'll nibble at food in the morning before I leave though.

Just a general question but are x-rays expensive? Not that I can't afford it - I have that care credit card for instances like this which I was suppose to use for dental stuff but my baby is way more important right now. I was just curious.
