New yorkie owner in hell positive update I just wanted to post this update 3 months after I got my now almost 9 month old Yorkie. I am so greatful for this site and all the help and support I received when I first got my doggie. The first 2 weeks were absolute he!!, I actually thought I was going to have to send her back. She is my first dog, and I had no idea what to expect, even though I read every thing I could, and how hard it would be to have this little being in my life. That being said, we got through everything, including the potty training - she is just about 100 percent pee pad trained - and she is the absolute love of my life. She brings me joy, laughter and companionship every day (even though I now have to get up at 7:30 - this is after I get up at 5:00 to let her pee - when I used to be able to get up at 9:00 and get up whenever on the weekends). I can't imagine my life without this beautiful, funny, lovely doggie smelling creature. SO, for all of you out there who are getting a Yorkie and you think you might lose your mind because this puppy is so willfull and hard to deal with, HANG IN THERE. And believe it or not, once you get through it all, you will think that you should have actually enjoyed, yes enjoyed, all that puupy stuff that you stressed out about. Because our doggies are young one time, so I hope that some of you reading this and thinking they may have made the wrong decision in getting a yorkie puppy, will realize that you CAN get through all the crap and have an amazing, wonderful dog. |
Glad you posted an update and so happy everything is going great:D I know it can be hard but the difficult times are so minor compared to the love that Georgie has brought us. I love him behind words, talk to him like he can answer (I swear sometimes he does:)) and can never imagine my life without him:D |
I'm so glad you hung in there and it worked out so well. I have had many puppies and each time I think what did I do the first couple of days and then they steal your heart! |
Yup, I talk to Beanie all the time. No really, I have conversations with her. She just looks at me with this look, like o.k., I don't really care what you are saying, just give me FOOD. LOL |
that is so great! i too had yorkie puppy blues when i first got my angel. we were up every two hrs as he was sick and i had to syringe water and feed him and wash his bum after runny stools. it was hard, i cried everyday, but we are so very close now. the closest i've ever been to anyone! i love him beyond and would do anything for my baby. but i am glad the puppy stage is over though.... hmm, dont know how im going to handle it agian, but just one look at their faces and its so evident why we do it:) |
So glad to hear your good report. My Gracie was not my first dog by far but she was my first terrier and she was a terror! Now I miss her puppy days. I guess now that I know how to deal with the issues it makes it seem like less of an ordeal:rolleyes: I don't have to get up early with her as she sleeps in the bed with me and has her own steps to get up and take herself to her potty. It is heavenly. She comes right back to bed and snuggles in with me. (she is not a morning person) She is still such a character and I love her dearly. I want another one but have been so scared by some of the issues people have faced that I have read here on YT. I'd love to rescue one but there are no rescues in our area and Yorkies are not popular in this area either. I love to hear how a puppy that seemed like a terror at first becomes the love of someone's life!:) |

Awwww! That's so great! It's not like that ONLY with a puppy, tho...it's kind of like that with any new furbaby. But, it is all sooooo worth it after you get in sync with each other...and the bond is set. I am so happy to hear you're getting on so well with your new baby and loving it so much. Nothing is as rewarding in exactly the same way as bonding with a completely different species. Your post should be an inspiration to all new fur parents...hang in there until the fun starts for real! :D |
Congratulations on cutting your teeth as a first-time dog owner. It sounds like it was a rough start, and I'm glad you're doing well now. I could sort of relate. My first experience with a yorkie was dog-sitting my friend's yorkie. I never owned a dog before. That yorkie had all sorts of behavioral and medical problems. I dog-sat that dog for weeks and long weekends at a time. But guess what? All the trouble was worth it. That yorkie was so dang loveable. I cried every time I returned the dog back to the owner. Because of that yorkie, I fell in love with the breed. Now I have my own yorkie. She is a light in my life. Incidentally, my yorkie doesn't have the problems my friend's yorkie had. But her yorkie will always have a special place in my heart. In a way, he was my first yorkie. |
Ahahahha, I do the same thing. I ask her, do you know home much I love you. Of course she just looks at me. O.K. I have to ask this question. She smells like sleep when she, well gets sleepy. But I swear, she smells like freakin corn chips!! I have friends who have dogs and they say that their feet smell like corn chips. But my doggie just smells like corn chips when she is sleepy. |

So glad things are working out for you both! I wasn't sure they would, you had me very worried at times. But I'm glad ... it is so worth it!:D |
So what the heck is it that makes dogs smell like corn chips?? How funny. It is only when she is sleepy, which she is now and smelling like corn chips. I cover her crate with a quilt (I know she is like a paraquet), and when she gets up, all I can smell is freakin fritos! ahahahahahhahha |

Here is a poll that was done on "Frito feet" LOL. I didn't read all the posts to see what the reasoning is for the smell. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pol...rito-feet.html |
Alright now that this thread has turned into discussions about fritos and corn chips here is what I found LOL mental_floss Blog Why Do Your Dog’s Feet Smell Like Popcorn? |

This is great, I remember reading your posts and thinking "welcome to my world"...I knew (have had pups in the past) that you would make it through it, I remember thinking what in the heck did I get in etc! I'm so glad all is well, your a doll! |

Me, too...arghhh...:p...and I'll probably fix popcorn tomorrow, too...:D |
Glad things are better now:D I had a hard time with my babies too, skin and fur:laugh: Once you get into a routine, it gets easier, and of course when you are in love with them, it helps you keep your sanity. Enjoy your baby:) |

your update is so awesome, it brought a tear to my eye. i am happy for you and your little one... |
I am happy that all turned out so well |
OMG, too funny about the Frito Feet!!! Just to show you how awsomely wonderful my doggie is (ya, I know I am obnoxious about her, I can't help it, she is the freakin love of my life - WAAAYYYYY more than the ex husbands (yes 2 of them - figured out I hated being married), she has Frito Body. It isn't her feet that smell like corn chips, it is her head I think. I can't figure it out, she just smells like corn chips when she is all sleepy. She is conked out on the couch beside me on the giant snuggie and I am smelling corn chips as I am writing this. I wonder if there is any kind of "scientific" study done on why dogs smell like corn chips. |

So happy that all has worked out and I had times when I thought what have I done. Miss Prissy is a very strong willed yorkie and we have learned to love that about her,,she rocks our world even in her demon diva times. |
Beanie is just the best dog. She hardly EVER barks. People cannot believe that I have a Yorkie that doesn't yap. She is the most well behaved dog when we visit people. She will just sit quietly on my lap and look at everyone. If I go over someone's house for dinner, I tell her to go in her bed and she will sit in it and just watch everyone eat. Does not beg for food or make a peep. When I am home, I can actually have her on my lap when I eat and she won't even try and get my food. When I take her to be groomed, the groomer doesn't want to give her back to me because she says that Beanie is the sweetest, best dog she has ever seen and cannot believe how well behaved she is. She has "fans" all along where we walk, everyone loves to see her and she LOVES people and other dogs. Although I am really careful about her being around other dogs, I make sure the dog is friendly and I kind of hang onto Beanie's harness while they sniff each other. I had a terrible experience last month when 2 large dogs were off their leash in the park across the street and they ran up to Beanie and, if I hadn't been quick, one of them would have had her in its mouth. I flipped out on the owner, who told me to calm the eff down. You can imagine that the scene was quite ugly. I have since talked to other people who own dogs in my area and they know about these 2 dogs and the owner. She is really lucky I didn't smack the crap out of her, except her stupid dogs would have eaten ME. I really see the difference from dog to other dogs when I visit friends who have dogs and the dogs go nuts barking and one stupid Maltese always nips at Beanie when she tries to play with her. My dog does not make one bark while other dogs are yapping their heads off. She startles me when she does bark, it is like whoaa where did THAT come from. O.K., enough of my total obnoxiousness about my PERFECT dog. ahahahahahahaha |

I know what you mean about when they DON'T do something annoying because they are sick and then start doing it again when they feel better. It is such a relief. Beanie never stays still, she is so hyper sometimes, it drives me crazy (her one imperfection - LOL). But the couple of times she got car sick, when we got home, she just went in her bed the rest of the day and I was so worried about her. I wanted her to get up and be hyper running all around the house and wanting to play constantly or go out for a walk/jog. I am assuming that as she gets older (she is almost 9 months), she will calm down???? She IS a lot better on the weekends when I hang out with her all weekend and we go visiting or walking in different places. I do spend 3 hours with her in the a.m., come home for lunch and spend an hour with her and then the whole night when I get home. I try to walk her 3 times a day for at least 15 - 20 minutes per time. We walk/jog, but she STILL has energy when we get back in the house and runs around some more. Phew, I can't keep up with her!!! |

I can totally relate to this post. I got mine about 7 weeks ago and while I never thought about giving up I have told people that it is much more work than I expected. That said I wouldn't trade it for the world. Zoe is my first puppy experience and I too read everything I could get my hands on as I was going to do everything perfect, unfortunately my Zoe didn't seem to go by the books:). She doesn't pee and poop withing 20 minutes of eating like all the books says she will do, she pees in her crate even though it was very small, she never wanted to eat breakfast until 11:00 am, etc, etc. however, she does sleep with me all night long without making a move, she is starting to run to the door and scratch when she has to pee, she consistently poops morning noon and night she looks at me and cocks her head as if to say I love you for all your dedication and hardwork. She has stole my heart! |
