How big will my yorkie get? Hi, I'm new to YT! When I got my Yorkie she was 16 weeks and 2.8lbs. When I had purchased my yorkie the breeder claimed she would be around 4lbs. She's 26 weeks old and already 4.8lbs. The dam was 4lbs 12 oz and the sire was a 3lb 12oz dog. Do you think she will continue to grow or stay about where she is right now? She is about 12 inches from head to toe and her body is about 7.5 in tall. I love my baby no matter what, and Im just curious because I have already bought her a bunch of clothing. |
That really a difficult question to answer considering Yorkies come from a long line of medium size dogs and were breed to the smaller size most people see on TV these days. It is possible for a pups to be larger than the parents if it comes from a line of larger g'dogs. Example: I kept a pup form a litter from my 8-9 lbs. parents. SHe ended up being twice the size of both of them. Today she weighs 18lbs. and stands around 15' at the shoulder. |
Did you see the mom and dad dog? Sometimes a dog can produce larger puppies but yours sounds quite a bit bigger than the parents. There is a general rule listed here on YT that by doubling the puppy's high and weight at 13 weeks you can estimate how big your dog will be when mature. |
Yes, i saw the mom and dad in person. Well, 4.8 lbs is equivalent to 4 lbs 12 oz which is the weight of the mother, but she is still only 26 weeks old leaving her more room to grow? When i double her 13 week old weight it is about the equivalent of what she is right now, could she be done growing? --She doesn't seem to be overweight or eat much, but could I possibly be overfeeding her? I feed her Buffalo Blue for Small puppy Breed, and i give her her bowl a couple times a day but she doesn't seem to eat much...only before she goes to sleep. |

Sadie and Scooter had pups, Sadie weighs 6 lbs. Scooter weighs 8. Two of their pups (Bear and Thor ) weigh 15 lbs. Go Figure |
hmm thanks, i guess ill just hold off on buying her more clothes right now |
There is no sure fire way to tell 100% how big your pup will get some times even tiny parents can produce a pup that gets bigger because it might be in there genetics. Most of Callie's clothes I bought when she was a pup were from ebay and gently used until she got full grown. |

Thanks ! I appreciate the feedback! |
If she is only 26 weeks I doubt she is done growing. Laddy grew till he was almost a year old. Kyra is 5 months and hopefully still growing. Your baby sure is a little cutie. :) |
Thank you, I like your babies too, I appreciate your help was curious she is my first yorkie. |

The normal rule is that a dog is done growing between the age of 18 mos. and 2. |
1 Attachment(s) hi your baby is very cute. i have no idea how big your baby will get but this is my boy: 26 weeks @ 6lbs 12ozs. he is now 31 weeks/ a little over 7 months @ 7lbs 5ozs so he has slowed in growth quite a bit. you just have to wait and see i guess... |

Your pup should get a bit bigger. My female was 3.5 pounds until she was 8 months old and is now 5.0 pounds at 2 years. |
Well what happened to me happened to you my yorkie outgrew her projected weight. I think she will e around 6 pounds |

Oscar is adorable! |
1 Attachment(s) I find it funny though how my Alexa still fits perfectly in XXXSmall clothing at 4.8lbs. Now, she's grown out of it a little by length size, but still looks cute. Does she look about the right size for a Yorkie almost at 5lbs? I don't know too much about Yorkies, but I would think that a 5lb Yorkie would look a bit bigger and be around a size small. |

She looks perfect to me. Love her face.... a lot has to do with the frame size. you could look at two yorkies both weighing 5 pounds but one looks bigger, it is because different frame types... your little girl is perfect...... |
She is tiny and so cute! 5 pounds is still real tiny. Especially when you think of it as shes a sack of sugar |

Ah, I see. I was unaware of that, but I believe someone mentioned earlier in this post that Yorkies have an ancestry of medium sized dogs. So I guess frame types could come into play there, and thank you! Do you by any chance have any recommendations on obedient/potty training? The other day I tried to teach her to sit, but she was to anxious to get the treat I was holding. She also seems to have a lot of "accidents" around the house still. We leave the door open for her, and take her out and place her in the grass several times a day, but we still keep finding random puddles. |

I just hope everyone is happy with their pets no matter what size they end up. If people want a small dog, 5lbs or under, there is just no way to be sure that is what you will get. Even if the mom and dad are small they can still have babies that end up bigger. If you buy a puppy from someone who has been consistently producing puppies that mature at around 5 to 7 pounds then you have a better chance of having a dog that matures at that size. Otherwise it is just a gamble. So many people are buying puppies from greeders that say one thing but produce something all together different. Even those fancy internet ads that you see that say they are selling puppies that will be 2.5lbs are just a scam. They are puppy mills and they know there is no way you can get them for selling you a dog that is much bigger than what they promised you. They will be glad to take your money though and if they can get $800.00 or $3500.00 they grab it. Buyer beware! |
I just want my Khloe to be a healthy weight. I was in the vet this morning picking up heartworm meds for my other girl, Kirby. I was looking at their shelf and most of their products said 5 pounds and over. I don't want Khloe to be under 5 pounds. I know she is still a puppy but she seems so small at three pounds. I can't imagine that size dog as an adult. I would be afraid of medical procedures on an extra tiny dog.:aimeeyork |

Yes I see. I hadn't originally thought of Yorkies that way, but it makes sense since they have come from a medium sized dog ancestor (someone posted about this earlier). I just had assumed that all Yorkies had thinner frames which is why I thought my Alexa looks smaller than the weight she is. I had also been thinking of two poodles my relatives own which are about two times taller than my pup, but only 9 lbs. As far as obedient/potty training do you have any recommendations? I've tried teaching her to sit, but shes too anxious/hyper to listen. Also, we leave the door open for her and take her out to the grass several times a day, but she continues having accidents in the house. |

I disagree with you thinking that a 5lb Yorkie is a bad thing however. According to most sites that I have visited an average sized Yorkie is between 5-7 pounds. Meaning that their will always be exceptions and that it is less likely, but a 4lb Yorkie and 8lb Yorkie could be on the smaller and larger scales if 5-7 is average. I simply wanted to get an idea of where she might be at as an adult (since she seems like she will be bigger). I do however have a Biewer Yorkie which may have led you to the conclusion that my baby is from a puppy mill. I do acknowledge the fact that some people may not agree with Biewer Yorkies because they are "poorly bred", but to me I see the white in her as something pretty even though it might be against AKC standards. |
