| A step in the right direction to prevent overvaccination..... The USDA has approved the Canine Vaccicheck Test kit. It's a test kit to check for antibodies for the three core vaccines. It will simultaneously check for Canine Infectious Hepatitis, Canine Parvovirus, and Canine Distemper Virus. This test will allow the vet to do the test in- house and get the results in about 20 minutes. All vets should send out a card for a titer test rather than for administering unnecessary vaccines. The article does not state if the kits are being distributed as of yet??? Unfortunately this test does not take into account memory cells. A "titer" is a measurement of how much antibody to a certain virus (or other antigen) is circulating in the blood at that moment. A titer test does not and cannot measure immunity, because immunity to specific viruses is reliant not on antibodies, but on memory cells, which we have no way to measure. Memory cells are what prompt the immune system to create antibodies and dispatch them to an infection caused by the virus it "remembers." Memory cells don't need "reminders" in the form of re-vaccination to keep producing antibodies. But this is a great test to see if the pup responded well to a vaccine. It will also be beneficial to check the status of a stray or lost dog. Dr. Schultz also seems to be on board for this test. | Awesome! That's good to know! I test for titers but yes, hate that it is not all that accurate. I try to take my dogs to places like dog parks or petsmart where they are more likely to be exposed so that it will show on the titers and it worked last time. The time before that, Zoe tested low and the vet said I should bring her in for a booster but I ignored them and tittered again the following year after bringing her out and about and this time her titers were nice and high! |

| Thank you so much for posting this. I wonder how quickly we will begin seeing them in our vet offices and how the vets will feel about using this vs vaccinating...

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Ooo, cool! I love me some good vaccine news. I really think it's great that titers are becoming more and more ubiquitous and available to people. This would be a great little kit to use on rescues/strays - to see if it looks like they've previously had vax somewhere....thereby not giving them unnecessary shots.

| Bumping......Everyone should see this so as to ask for this test instead of possibly vaccinating an already protected pet.

| I think I will request this test.. To be honest I have been worried about this Since I have not had Corky from a puppy. The vet was trying to get me to give him more shots But I said no. |

| Good for you.....I've had vets say to me, "We require you have X vaccine (s)." In order to go to their office. I really hate this kind of coercion. It's my pet, my money , my decision. What's with the "we" stuff. They had better be careful "requiring" anything or they may find themselves on the receiving end of a lawsuit if the pet has a bad reaction. This kind of thing goes on more than we know.
