Pet Insurance? Any thoughts?? Any suggestions???? - Page 2 - YorkieTalk.com Forums

I got pet insurance for Riley the day I brought him home. I had Trupanion. I had a – 0 – deductible and they reimbursed 90% of covered healthcare expenses, Minus the examination fees and routine preventative care. I forked out $187.50 in a 2-week period for examination fees for some ear infections Riley was having back in May, last year.

The insurance started at $32.68/month in July of 2010 and on the 1-year date, it jumped to $43.77/month.

I canceled it 2-months ago... Now I just have that $43.77 a month put into a Savings Account, which earns interest, which I have set aside for him. I also add $100.00 a month to that account… and he has his own Mastercard, so we should be okay in the event anything were to happen.

No true insurance will because it's routine. Sometimes you can get a rider for those kinds of things but won't save much by doing that. Ry's covers dentistry is we do cleanings as the vet recommends which was a major plus for me.

I'm confused, you say most don't cover it because it's routine, but are you saying that Ry's does cover it? Or are you saying, "if you do the cleanings the vet recommends the insurance will cover other toothcare? Sorry, I just wanted to be sure what you meant.

I'm saying our policy says that if we do cleanings when required by our vet any further oral care or surgery would be covered. This may have changed since we signed up though.

Great idea.................I think I will assign one of my credit cards to Rylee as well as having a savings account for her! I have a Discover card with a picture of a Yorkie on it........might as well be that one!

She is MORE than worth any amount of money I might have to put out!!!!!!!! I love my baby girl!!!!!!!! Thank you to all of you for your input! I love this site!!!!!!!!

I just posted this on another thread about pet insurance. I have never had pet insurance, but there is so much more that can be done medically today than in the past. I believe strongly in getting insurance when a pup is younger and has no or few pre-existing conditions. I have read many threads on YT about insurance and have been saving information on my computer about it. Ann started a thread a couple of years ago about health insurance that I found very valuable. Dr. Paula Terifaj, a vet in California, was research health insurance for her own pup. The links below are the thread that Ann started and the result of Dr. Terifaj, DVM's search for pet insurance.

Well After reading this thread, and a few others.. Started looking into pet insurance.. Corky's Vet offers insurance, But it does not cover accidents or "I am just not feeling well visits". and will give me 15% off services. It does pay for the office visits.

Any thoughts??

I guess that depends on you, but I wouldn't think that would be very good. Most of us can absorb the cost of office visits, its accidents and major surgeries that I would like to be covered for. Those are the things that it's not as easy to absorb.

I agree that most people are OK with normal care and occasional visits to have something checked out. It is hospitalization, tests and surgery that can be really expensive.
I would rather get a policy that was for unexpected and costly situations and just pay out of pocket for the routine stuff. Even with a higher deductible and an 80% reimbursement it would make those costly situations more doable and the premium hopefully would be less than an all inclusive plan.

I just went to ASPCA web site... They have health insurance I pick a plan that has a 100 deductible covers 90 % pay backk:

Accidents
Treatment for injuries
Prescription medications
Diagnostic procedures
Lab tests
X-rays
Surgery
Hospitalization
Illnesses
Treatment for illnesses
Prescription medications
Diagnostic procedures
Lab tests
X-rays
Surgery
Hospitalization

No dental, No well doggy care. I have to pay up front in order to get my money back. (Not liking this part)... Have to see.

Thoughts??

You have to pay upfront for any pet insurance and then you submit a claim for reimbursement. Or at least all of the ones I had checked out.
