We dont often think about the flying objects in a car! I had a really nice console car seat for my baby to ride in....I was running errands without her one day, a car ran a red light in front of me, I slammed on my brakes....and a text book that was up in the back window of my car, FLEW from the back, all the way up to the front dashboard, slamming into the a/c vent so hard, it broke it......if my little dog had been sitting in that console car seat, that book would have slammed into her and I am afraid it would have been all over but the hole digging.....since that day, mine always go in the hard enclosed pet carrier, with the seat belt passed thru the handle to hold it securely in the seat.

My husband has taken canvas closet baskets and used bungee cords to secure them in our cars. We've lined them with small blankets. He does not fall out. He can jump in and out of them.

I love homemade car seats. They are easy to make and you save so much money. I made mine with a laundry basket. My husband devised a belt system to secure the basket around the seat and then inside we use like you a pillow and blanket. Only difference is I have straps inside the basket to secure them to my babie's harneses so if ever an accident they won't fly out. Closet baskets are a cute idea too.

I love the Snoozer pet car seat. It sounds like you need to shorten the tether line in your seat so that your pet can only sit or lay down. If nothing else you can always use a regular hard pet carrier to keep your baby safe while in the car.

I have a hatchback, so my back seats are always down and I use a wire crate, with bed and blankets for both my girls. My schnauzer is more comfortable in that then in anything/or with anything else in the car...and it stops Charlee from jumping out, falling off the car seat I had for her (2X it happened)...once she was hanging outside the car seat by her harness I feel so much better with them in a crate! And yet, they can get lots of air, and see out!

If you must transport your furchild in the front seat, make sure you DISABLE the passenger side airbag. Dori rides secure in the back harnessed to her seat which is secured with a seat belt. I think it is Snoozer-like as she can see out the window.

Mine have always ridden in their buckled in hard carrier. They have no interest in looking out. We travel with them a good bit and they just curl up happily in their crate.

Another vote here for the hard sided carriers, buckled into the seat belt. From the time they are pups they ride in their carriers in the car.

I also saw a beautifully built aluminum carrier, but they didn't have a small enough size for Razzle, or a big enough size for my big boy.

We too were rear ended once, luckily with no dogs in the van, but there were groceries on the back two seats that ended up on the floor, and our big crates crashed into the back seats as well. Now the big crates are affixed in the very rear of the va , and so far no sliding of the crates forward.

I agree that a hard carrier is the safest way to travel with a pet. The snoozer is great for riding around town but for on the highway or any sort of a long trip Gracie is in her hard carrier that is seat belted in. A pet could sustain some serious injuries in a car seat if an accident were to occur at a high rate of speed.

What do you use in the car?-jack-carseat.jpg

This is the car seat I have for my 2. This was before it was installed and Jack was checking it out.

Not a good view but this is installed. It is huge, takes up 1/2 the back seat. I have no other back seat riders so it is perfect for them.

It is like the large snoozer one, but I dont think it is a snoozer brand.

What a lovely basket of laundry! Great idea.

I LOVE this idea! It's awesome!! For around town, I might have to try this. For longer trips, I use my hard carrier strapped in, though.

I use one of those "hammock" type seat covers that attach to the headrests on the front and back seats. I have a crew cab pick-up truck and this works really best for us. I can't put Connor in the back seat with his harness on because he literally destroys it before I even turn the corner from my house, and would do the same if he were put in a car seat! Needless to say, we don't go many places with the boys, unless DH is driving and I can sit in the back seat with them to keep them company. The hammock is used only when I'm solo with the boys.
