Okay back to the OP's question vs a vs Breeders.

One thing that could work, is if you have someone you know that lives nearby to a breeder that you are interested in; they could visit the breeder, and see the sires and dams.

Another I like to ask for is the Breeder's Vet Reference, and do follow-up on that reference. I would ask the vet specific questions on what tests she does on her breeding pairs. For example even though my vet is not qualified to do CERF, Razzle's cerf certification is kept on file with him, as well as OFA certification on hips, Thyroid, etc. I would ask the vet in his opinion do her breeding dams/sire, meet the standard in terms of structure, coat, color, etc. I would ask the vet about the temperament of her dogs. I would ask the vet how long she has been a client, and does she bring in any of her other breeds to him? This is a sneaker quesiton, because if she hasn't disclosed to you all her breeds that she breeds then,......

On the subject of Contracts: it would be of benefit to you the purchaser, prior to signing a contract to run it past your lawyer. You truly do want to understand your rights under this contract.

And on a side note' I'd never accept a pup that has been spayed prematurely. Or agree to a condition that a pup MUST be spayed prior to 12months. There can be some medical conditions that prevent you from fulfilling that part of the contract. And it is up to me and my Vet to determine the most appropriate time for spaying/neutering

Nicole, I am very sorry that this seems to be some huge misinterpretation on the part of LM. My thoughts regarding what transpired were not meant to provoke this back and forth dialogue and it's my hope it has been sucessfullly address or be taken to PMs if necessary. :)

On that note, what is generally the best time to spay a puppy? I read 6 months, as long as the puppy is over 3lbs. I feel like anytime before that might be too early.

That is exactly why we need to give correct information when it comes to the forum. Many members never post but read daily and have been members for many years, but many people do not realize this goes on. It seems like 6 months seems to be common (after reading many threads about this on this forum) so it did seem strange that SET Yorkies spays before they ship (at 15-20 weeks). If you spay/neuter before the hormones have the chance to have effect on the puppies development, it can be an issue.

Yes, in today's world, this seems early to spay. However, it's not always the case. In shelters everywhere in the northeast dogs are spayed very early. My first female yorkie was spayed at 4 months old and my male at 12 weeks old. Nowadays, 6 mos seems to be the norm.

Exactly...I do not like to spay until after the first heat......only because my female Scarlett was spayed at 10 months of age....she never had a first heat...a year later she came into full blown heat..so after she went thru that she had to be re spayed....when they did that he found a small piece of her ovary..just enough to throw her into a heat....he explained to me that had she gone thru a full heat prior the chances of that happening would have been slimmer....Isabella was never spayed as she never had a true heat cycle, just swelling but no spotting, but did have a false pregnancy. Sadly though Isabella was diagnosed with GME at 14 months of age and died at 17 months for the GME.:(
My boys (Shih Tzu's) are neutered at 9 to 10 months of age...and both are still squatters...;)

Personally, I would not like my breeder dictating an age to spay/neuter or doing so prior to purchase at such a young age. The only time that I think this would be remotely acceptable is in a Rescue situation. Even then I know some rescues will either keep the puppy until they are old enough or require proof when they reach an acceptable age. My Doodlebug was a puppy and after a background check I was approved with the condition of neutering with proof. He was neutered right over the 6 months mark when he reached 5 lbs.

Juvenile spaying IS an issue. And at 15-20 wks they are juvenile.

And there will be a widely varying opinions on this. My opinion is outside the norm for this forum, but it is I believe an informed one, and one that honors my belief in giving each pup the chance to mature to their full boney potential:)

I will not spay a dog before the growth plates close and research indicates this is at 12-14mths month' which is probably a safe timeframe for the toy breeds. And actually there is no guesswork involved, one lateral view of the tibial plate done by Xray can tell the vet if that growth plate has closed and if it has then as this is the last growth plate to close all others have.

Do yorkies usually retain teeth? So would I have to get them pulled on one date and then spayed on another? I was hoping to kill two birds with one stone in terms of anesthesia use.
