String algae isn't bad, it just can be unsightly. Hydrogen peroxide is the main ingredient of the stuff you buy to fight algae, and it’s much cheaper than some of the stuff you buy, only about 75 cents a pint. You use 1 pint to 1,000 gallons water, but remember, you might have to do major cleaning of filters for a week or so. Probably safer to under dose and check it the next week. The first few years algae was a problem because fish weren't big enough to eat it. So part of the year we were adding HP weekly. We had more of a problem with it when the water was slightly cool then when it's warm or cold. Also, it's helps if you don't feed them much food, more poop equals more algae. By the way, hydrogen peroxide also adds oxygen to the pond, in an emergency, should your pump break. Also, some of the algae killers are not meant to be used if you have fish, make sure yours says, “safe for fish.” Seriously, after about three years we hardly have to do anything, no overgrowth of algae, just a little on the sides of the pond, we have a leaf catcher and we empty that weekly and clean the biofilter yearly. By the way koi clay is great if you have oily skin and want a clay mask!

The stuff I use doesnt have hydrogen peroxide in it it is barley based and is safe for fish. My Husband read about using the hydrogen peroxide and asked the pond associate about it and he said not to use it with the fish and also because our dogs and cats drink out of the pond. So I dont know but it helps to hear that you use it. I wish our pond had that kind of ,maintenance we are always treating for algae and I just thought that went with it

Hydrogen peroxide is added to some water supplies, it's safe to drink. Hydrogen peroxide (hydrogen dioxide) is a water molecule with an extra oxygen atom. Anyway, we tried many things before we used this, and I swear it was the only thing that worked long term. Another thing is if you have a lot of string algae, and you kill it all at once, you must filter it out or it acts as a fertilizer to grow more algae. Here again the koi clay is helpful, because it clubs the dead algae into bigger sections that make it easier for your filter to remove. Once your plants have bigger root systems, they will be using this “fertilizer” giving the string algae competition for the nutrients. We found that adding a small amount of HP weekly kept it in check until our plants started growing. Hydrogen Peroxide will not hurt your plants either, they are a more complex cell than the string algae.

We are new to this pond keeping business we have had small garden ponds in the past but this is our first experience with a bigger pond so it really helps to get tips from someone with more experience with it. I shop at petsmart and petco occasionally...mainly because its one of the few stores my guys are allowed in!!! I get their food from Tractor supply (Taste of the wild) and order most of their clothes, beds, treats and such from YT vendors or online!

while yall are talking about fish, I do feel sorry for betta's, because they are in such a tiny container to me that is abuse for a fish, you know they like to swim to not stay in one spot.. I shop at petsmart and petco to get dogfood.
not everyone can shop online or can get to a petstore, so they have to make do with the food they can get in their town.

I get my boys food at Walmart or the grocery store. I don't live anywhere near pet stores that sell puppies, so that won't be a problem with me.
