Default coyote kills 2 small yorkie

Can some explain how such a thing could happen? I have 3 yorkies that are never put outside for a second without me or hubby! I dont understand what would make you think this couldnt happen to you.The news has been telling everyone to be careful, this is coyote mateing time. very sad for this lady who was on the news crying her eyes out, but on the other hand Im mad at her for being careless with her babies, that are to small to hold there own.

I'm in Phoenix AZ and these Coyotes steal dogs right off their leashes, jump over 6 ft fences and grab dogs right out of the yard and so on. It's not her fault at ALL.

I'm ALWAYS outside with my babies when I'm in my back yard. However, if a coyote were to jump over the fence and my babies were more than 5 ft away from me I can guarantee that coyote would grab my dog before I could.
These coyotes are starving, have barely any place left to live and are desperate.

This happen in Delware Ohio. if they are attacking you can not kill them in city limits, but if it was me i would not stand and watch my fury kids be eaten by coyotes! I would be willing to pay the price.

Yeah, trust me I would definitely go running! I've seen them even in the city running down the street. There is no area around where they could possibly live so my guess is they are living in a yard in the area.

I keep a high powered semi-automatic BB gun on my table outside. Not only for the coyotes but there is a hawk that I always see picking up pigeons and ring neck doves right from the sky!

It's a scary thing but it's happening.

Many cats go missing from this town every day, even one of my own that I gave a friend was taken away. They are QUICK and usually deliver their kill bite on the grab....

Edit: Oh and either they are trying to pass a law or already have passed a law to allow you to shoot them in city limits, threat or not.

Oh my goodness! I know we have the occasional black bear wandering around in a new housing subdivision where I live...not too near me, however...but apparently, I have been incredibly lucky all this time...

Mine are never more than a few feet away from me outside, but I would be no competition for a coyote without some leaded power in hand...

A lot of people are no match for them, if they can even catch them.

Little info:
During pursuit, a coyote may reach speeds up to 43 mph (69 km/h), and can jump a distance of over 13 ft (4 m).

They are nocturnal but will hunt in the day if they aren't afraid of men. And, they aren't! I've seen them running down a major street at 4 in the afternoon. Crazy.

It is sad but anyone who leaves yorkies out in the yard unattended with hawks, coyotes and people just waiting to steal them are just asking for it. We saw a coyote 3 mins drive from my house and I live downtown so they are everywhere

One came into the yard of a friend of mine and bit their child....

I agree, be OUTSIDE with your animal. Keep a weapon, a BB gun or sling shot. Keep noise maker outside too....coyotes HATE noise.
And finally, to lessen your chances of coyotes or hawks...don't have bird feeders, bird houses or any small animals like Rabbits or the such in cages in the back yard.

Never leave food for predators. It may be nice to see birds and have rabbits but it's not worth your animal.

This is the first I've even heard of this! I know some places here I've heard of people refer to "coy-dogs" where cross-mating has occurred. Also, we seem to have phases here of reports of small dogs and children being alligator victims. But, truly, this is the first I've heard of this horrific danger in so many parts of the country. I grew up in Oklahoma where there was lots of woods and wild creatures...my gramma shot from the hip with the shotgun she always carried. I know we are crowding all other species out of existence, but I guess I am more out of touch than I thought 'cuz I had absolutely no idea!

I saw a fox in my neighborhood this week. Later that day our local news broadcasted that two persons had gotten bitten by a fox in our capital city. I never go out with a stick or garden tool.

Yup, it's getting really bad. I feel bad for the coyotes because they are beautiful animals. It's sad.

A guy at work came up to me this AM and told me his lab ran after one yesterday and wouldn't come back. He lives on about 20 acres. He's thankful that the lab came back. Although a single coyote couldn't kill a lab, it would put up a fight and/or bring the lab to a group of coyotes.

Scary.

A lady near the coast had a coyote come through the doggie door and kill three yorkies. Coyotes are everywhere and they eat small animals. My backyard backs up to open space and I had "coyote rollers" installed on my wrought iron fence. They can't come in from the back but if they are in front of my house they can jump over the front gate. You just had to be very careful.

I know this is true ! My Sister owns a house in Ashville O. which is next to Delaware. Her son ( a police officer) was playing basket ball and saw a coyote cross the road from the pasture. It ran toward a young woman and her dog. It grabbed her small poodle and shook it. The poor dog was dead before they could do anything to help. The teenage girl was screaming as the coyote ripped the leash out of her hand ! My sister and her son were horrified. By the time they got to the poor girl, the coyote was going into the woods.

Scary.
I heard of a case where a lab was approached by a coyote, and the coyote began trying to play (by doing the play stance, etc). When the lab joined in, the coyote moved farther away and the lab followed, all the while they were still "playing." Then the rest of the coyote pack came out of nowhere and killed the lab.

Your friend and his lab were very lucky.
