| Puppy Food as Regular Diet for Adult Yorkie -- Why Not? sure, the standard answer is "because puppy food has more calories, which can cause them to become obese." however, if that is extremely unlikely to occur in a particular dog, *then* is it okay? here's my long, drawn-out story/rant/theory, lol: Miss Waffles has always had dry kibble available to her 24/7, and she's never scarfed it all down at once...in fact, she's never eaten more than a few pieces at a time. up until 6 months of age, she averaged slightly under 1/2 cup of puppy food per day, which wasn't much to begin with. then, right around 6 months, she suddenly drastically reduced her intake, to slightly under 1/4 cup per day... i asked my vet about this when i took her in at 7 months, and she said not to worry, as Waffles had still gained weight from the previous month, she was needing less calories as she was done with any major growth spurts, and it's not uncommon for smaller/more petite yorkies to just not be big eaters. she also said that i should switch her over to the adult version of the same brand of food by 9 months, if not before... well, since switching her over a few weeks ago, her daily average intake has doubled -- from almost 1/4 cup puppy food to almost 1/2 cup adult food...there's also been an increase in her pooping frequency. :/ i highly doubt she's eating more because she likes the taste better, because A: it's the same brand, and B: a few months ago, i had 2 sample bags of different brands of puppy food; one of which she preferred slightly over her usual brand, and the other, slightly less (i actually ran several trials of blind taste testing on her to find out, LOL) -- and yet, even when i filled her bowl with the preferred brand, she still ate the same amount per day as her usual brand... therefore, i've come to the (Captain Obvious?) conclusion that she's eating more adult food to make up for the extra calories that were in the puppy food. so, why not just feed her puppy food? -- half the expense, half the poop, half the hassle! what do you guys think?
