Boyfriend Won't Let Furbabies Sleep In Bed :( I'm starting to date someone new, and he told me that he doesn't know if he can ever get used to Kimchee and Linus sleeping in bed with us :( I feel awful because I understand where he is coming from, but it breaks my heart to think about making Kimchee and Linus sleep somewhere else, especially since they have always slept in my bed with me, are the best cuddlers, and it's such special time for us. Has anyone gone through this and come up with any good compromises or solutions? |
My solution would be to dump the boyfriend!:p |

I'll stick with furbabies, they'll never leave me :D |

my exact thoughts..:D |
LOL exactly. May sound crazy, but if I were start dating a man, and he began making new rules for MY dogs... it wouldn't fly. Whoever gets into a relationship with me will know Jackson was here first and he will always be on furniture, so... they can either deal or leave. |

Oh man, just let him know that you promise to not have your dogs lay in HIS bed at HIS house when you are there. But, your bed, your babies, your decision :) My GF didn't like it either but then I got her Jimmy, the yorkie, and now she doesn't mind at all and never says anything. And I never stopped having ChiChi in the bed the whole year and half she was complaining. |
I agree...the furbabies were there first and have always slept with you so i would not compromise with the boyfriend i would just tell him to get over it...lol :p when i first moved in with my hubby he had a pit puppy that was about 6 months old and he slept in the bed sometimes...i had to make him stop bc he stunk and i would get pushed to the very edge and sometimes fall off the bed. I didn't enjoy having to wash the bedding everyday. Im sure you keep your babies smelling good and don't push him off the bed though. He doesn't realize how lucky he is to have the little fur butts in his life. I wish my little boy would sleep with me!! |

And if that doesn't work, tell your boyfriend to sleep on the floor. |
LOL'ing, I'm guessing that YorkieTalk may not be the most neutral forum for this question! Thanks for the advice and stories :) |
I've always wondered how it worked for people in relationships. Seems like it would .... hinder intimacy :D |
To me, it's "love me love my package". It's just happened that my babies are not quite walk on 2 legs but they have feelings too. I used to date with a guy, I have a kitten at the time and he's just always in between us. There's never really worked out and in the end, I knew he is NOT the one for me. You have in fact told yourself an answer " it breaks my heart to think about making Kimchee and Linus sleep somewhere else, especially since they have always slept in my bed with me, are the best cuddlers, and it's such special time for us" :) |

I cannot tell you how many women marry men like him and in the end give up their beloved pups to save their marriage. :( My advice is to dump him now. |

He needs to get something straight.......HE is sleeping in THEIR bed. |

Maybe that's part of the problem...maybe BF is concerned about performance anxiety with having an audience...lol |
Well....I don't know if I'd get rid of the boyfriend.................yet! (unless he is a jerk LOL!) maybe you could have the furbutts sleep on YOUR side of the bed...I have 3 now....Sadie 7 yrs, Lillie 5 yrs and Bentley (our new little man) 6 months old.. I have to be honest here....it wasn't my idea to have them sleep with us...Hubby put Sadie in bed with us ONCE I was already asleep or I would have told him to put her back in her own bed....did the same thing with Lillie...although she was a little older...that's all it took...they will NOT sleep in their own beds (crates)...Bentley is very small and a wild man...he sleeps in his crate with a big puffy bed...He will probably never sleep in bed with us because he is too small and not going to get much bigger...Don't get me wrong...I LOVE having the furbutts in bed snuggled up to me but, they walk all over me!!! Literally!! LOL They keep me awake all night long! on top of the covers, under the covers on the covers, under the covers!! I've had a paw in the eye...ya...that hurt! I think they think they are climbing over mountains or something! But......I deal with it!! At this point, if they've been sleeping with you for a while, they probably will keep you up all night whining if you crate them....as for the intimacy thing????!!! we have to shut the door...and they sit there whining...VERY romantic!! LOL |
An alternate view Before Yorkies - I was not a "dog" person. I thought it was disgusting and nasty for a dog to be in the bed. All that hair, all that smell, I would have never allowed that. I have two good friends that slept with their dogs and I would not allow them in the bed when they spent the night with me. Their dogs had to sleep elsewhere. Actually one of them WAS a Yorkie and I have since apologized repeatedly to my friend. When I discovered, by being around a few, that Yorkies really don't shed and don't smell and were so loving, I was gradually won over. We got our first Yorkie in Dec 2010. As soon as I could trust him not to pee on my bed - he was in! He goes to sleep and usually doesn't move til morning. There is nothing I love more than waking up to him wanting his morning back massage and tummy rub. When my dds were little we called this morning time "snugging and loving". So what I am saying is. . . give the guy a chance to see how different and lovable Yorkies are. He may change his mind if it is presented well with no demands or ultimatums. |

You didn't hear it from me :hide2: |
I had the boyfriend first and then we got Furgie. We tried to get her to sleep in her crate at first, she did for the most part. Then when she got spayed and had to have her cone on, she didn't fit in her crate! Since then she has slept in our bed. I love it, he resisted and was not happy at first...I kind of ignored his requests and just had her sleep on my side.....it is now understood she sleeps in the bed...he has accepted it and when I go to work in the am and its just him and her.....she is in bed next to him :) |
Yeah, make the new boyfriend sleep in a crate. :D |
I agree....He's the outsider....not them. They were there first:D:D |
i think having them on ur side will give him time to adjust...u after all r the women and we r the ones in control just dont tell him that!! haha. good luck and keep us posted. |
Ok, I really love the "dump the boyfriend". Hee hee. But being all serious now. Has he been around the dogs much? Yorkies have a way of worming into hearts of people you know. :) My DH LOVES my girls. I would not have ever thought that would be the case. DH is the "man's man" and it is all about being manly. Until he got these two Yorkies in his heart! Now he talks to them about how bad boys are when they have dates to the Valentine's Day Ball!! :D:D:D Wondering if he might warm up to them? |
Glad that I never had this problem. My husband is the first one to put all 3 into bed with us and likes that Doodlebug is a back cuddlier :D |
My girls don't sleep with us bc I don't sleep well when they're in the bed all night. They sleep in their large kennel next to my side of the bed, and I always drape a piece of my clothing over it when we go to sleep ;) I'm wondering... Does he have a specific issue with them being in the bed? Is he worried he'll roll over on them... or can't sleep bc they curl up next to him, or between the two of you...??? |

Hmmm, a conundrum... Well, if your boyfriends name is Ricky, and yours is Lucy, there shouldn't be a problem... :p But if that isn't the case, then dumping the boyfriend is the best outcome, lol. :p :p:p Seriously, it is your home, and your babies, he should respect that |
Right on target, margaritaville!!!! The "new addition to the established family" is the boyfriend, and he has to be TOLD CLEARLY, SO HE CAN UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT IS BEING SAID, that HE is sleeping in THEIR bed!!! As long as they will allow him to sleep in their bed, he should be thankful. If they change their minds, HE will sleep on the floor! |
