I guess the change over to the HomeAgain 15 digit ISO compliant microchips was a fairly recent change within the last 2 years or the vet/shelter/breeder that implanted Kaji 3 years ago had an old stock of chips. I didn't even know about the 15 digit ISO compliant or standard chips until just after I got my mini poodle nearly 2 weeks ago. Her chip is definitely one of the old AVID chips. Not used microchips, but just old stock that the vet had. In any case the AVID chip my mini poodle has is no good for overseas travel unless she had the AVID Euro chip.
If only there was just one registry. I guess the closest thing to it is the microchip look up website. HomeAgain told me about that website, and they said that most vets and shelters would know to use the chip look up website if they call the microchip manufacturer, and the pet doesn't show up as registered with that particular company.
Too bad there is no way to know where a pet is registered when a pet is scanned without having to look up anything online. Most of the major registry companies like HomeAgain and Petlink will allow you to register your dog with any brand of microchip so you have to hope that vets and shelters really will find out where the pet is registered instead of just thinking HomeAgain chip=Call only HomeAgain or AVID chip=Call only AVID.
