Yorkies? Yuck! Have any of you guys run into people, offline, who expressed disgust over the idea of a yorkie? I had a client at work (I'm a beautician) who actually said 'yuck' when I mentioned I was getting a yorkie puppy. She likes big dogs, rats, even tarantulas, but apparently has some issue with small dogs. Now I can understand people not liking a little dog, or a 'pretty' dog with a bow in its hair, but who gets grossed out over a yorkie? And lets you know about it? I wouldn't be all, "Ewww," even if it was a pet cockroach I was told about (but I'd be thinkin' it ;)). People are just odd sometimes... |
I used to work with some people who were "big dog people." They would make fun of my little dog and say it was not a dog at all. I didn't pay attention to them at all. While I like big dogs they are not my preference to own but I certatinly would not make fun or make rude remarks about anyone's dog. I'd say the lady who made the remark about your dog has an attitude problem. How rude to make such a remark about anything that belongs to a fellow worker! It's better just to keep opinions like that to ones self. |
I must confess that I used to be one of those people. The only Yorkie I had ever met was an obnoxious, needy and unfriendly little devil belonging to a former boss. In retrospect, he had assumed the personality of his mistress, who was also highly obnoxious and needy. How we wound up with Smokey is a long story, but it was a love match made in Heaven from Day One. I never realized that so much affection, loyalty, smarts and joy could be packed into one compact and portable little gangster. |
She said that and you didn't mess up her hair? Lol. Just kidding. :p I probably wouldn't have held my tongue when she said that so I am not the best to take advice from. I mean she likes rats and tarantulas. And thinks a Yorkie is gross. Come on now. I would have said something like, well my Yorkie would kill your rat. Ha ha. See I don't need to give any advice on this thread. :p |

So was I. My aunt had one that I couldn't stand and I had a Spitz and 2 Labs at the time. My friend had a Yorkie/Maltese that I fell in love with! I decided to get one and then ended up with 3!My husband, the big dog lover was like . One passed away in Septamber :( and we adopted a Yorkie a week ago. :) My little ones even melt my husbands heart now! |

I think we all love our dogs regardless of size or breed but for someone to say yuck or anything else offending is just rude..Just as I taught my children when eating with others, if something was offered that they didn't like I told them to just say no thank you, no reason to say anything rude or offending..jmho. |
That seems kind of rude of the person and I'm sorry they were that way. But don't worry she is the one missing on the yorkie love not you :D |
I agree with the other posters... That person was just plain rude. I dont like dogs that drool.. But I would never insult one because they have heart too...and who knows I may fall in love with one some day! I have had Remy called names, like ridiculous ! I just know the people who call her names have not been lucky enough to be loved by a yorkie! Remy sure has won the heart of many who said they don't like small dogs and made fun of me for dressing her! |

Who could not love cute Remy :) or any other yorkie i believe its a jealous thing once they own one it will be a different story |
hi, well i have 3 dogs . an airedale terrier @ 85 pounds a shih tzu @ 12 pounds and a yorkie currently @ 5 pounds and yes i have encountered some rude people like that. i love all dogs big , small, ugly , cute. but i try to respect other peoples opinions but it is not always easy. when they insult my dogs i would sometimes like whack 'em.... |
I have had a few people tell me that long hair on a dog is gross and I should cut it. :( |
I have one Male friend who doesn't like yorkies (but he loves Max), And my mom and my sister... With my friend I think he just puts on a show in front of everyone because he doesn't want to look like a "sissy" lol (I'm trying to convince him that yorkies are 'manly" dogs). But behind closed doors he always gives Max kisses and he's always holding him. lol. As for my mom and sister they have no problem with small dogs, I used to have a little Westie Terrier growing up (they loved her), and I have a bichon (they love her)... As for Max (they don't like him... at all) I'm not sure why (The only reason I can think of is, because he's a yorkie??), but they treated him very badly once (if you read my thread a while ago you know what I'm talking about). Shame that its my own mom and sister, but you can't win them all, so we just keep to ourselves... Because if you don't like yorkies, I'm pretty sure you won't like me! |
My aunt said the most horrible things to my face about my little Tut when I brought him to my grandma's house on Christmas. She was such a jerk I cant even repeat what she said. |

Aw, it's too bad some of you have family that dislike your dogs. My family's a really dog friendly bunch, regardless of size; even my dad and grandpa just love their yorkies. |
I've had one person tell me something rude about my yorkie, she said it was stupid to dress my dog. I simply told her that maybe we should shrink her down to 7lbs, take all her clothes off, then let her run around in the winter air for a while, see if she wasn't cold. That shut her up. She was lucky I wasn't a beautician doing her hair or I would have cut a big lock off right in the center, and not told her. |
When I told the two guys at work that I was getting a yorkie, they made fun of me and said it's not a real dog but a designer dog. The one guy also said he was going to punt it...yeah I work with some real winners... |
I agree with the rest. It's rude, it's ignorant. It's their problem, not yours. I used to be one of them, too. I didn't see the point of little dogs. Most of the ones I met were yappy, anti-social and couldn't DO anything. It wasn't until one was thrust upon me by my wife that I saw that they are just like any other dog, just as smart, just as athletic, and just as lovable. No matter how much someone tells you they know about dogs, unless they've actually owned and raised a Yorkie, or other little dog, their education is lacking. Ignore them. Or better yet, prove them wrong. My Yorkies are smarter and better mannered than just about all of my big-dog friends' dogs. At the very least, an equal. |
yorkie love I agree if any body makes a remark like that there just being rude... Plus bet they haven't spend any time with a well trained yorkie You can't help but love lol!!!,I'm afraid of them myself. I just tell people that makes remarks to me. To each there own.:aimeeyork |
Missed a sentence there. Not everyone loves big dogs,I'm afraid of them myself. Forgive the mess up. |
That away to go CrimsonluvsLola You said just right |
Well I dont like all big dogs in fact I really dont prefer big dogs at all so if someone doesnt like little dogs like yorkies I dont have a problem with it but they dont have to say yuck thats rude but whatever some people are just different in the way they express themselves |

I think you handled it much better than I would have. I am one of those love-me- love- my -dog type of people. I would have lost a client but I would have pulled out lots of words that would have curled her hair but good. Common sense and common decency are either dead or on life support these days. I am glad I am raising a yorkie, and not kids, the way society is declining I fear for our species. |
All I can say about people like that woman is... "YUCK" I'm a single straight guy with a Yorkie (mix) and proud of it! |
everyone always tells me yorkies aren't a "real dog", I had a 52 pound sheltie, who wouldnt eat bones..only licked them, never broke a toy, scared of squeeky toys, only pooped in the woods, wouldn't pee on walks if you looked at him while doing it!lol never dug holes, never chewed belongings or futniture.. was very sensitive, i now have a 2lb, 13 week old yorkie who eats bones, rips her toys, squeaks all her toys to the point of driving me nuts, poops n pees without privacy, digs holes, chews everything...and acts more like a dog then any big dog i've ever met, lol, i loved my shelite for his sweet undoglike personality, but meesha is more like a dog-like then he was, size dosen't matter!!, every dog has a different personality so i wish people would stop judging by breed and size... |

That's so funny. Sheltie's can be such sweethearts. I have to agree about the Yorkie personality. Gracie hates me trying to make her look beautiful. I spend all this time giving her a bath and blowing her dry, then trimming her nails and around her eyes. I get her top knot all in place and she gets down and rolls on the floor, the couch, the cat bed and anything else she can get on and has her fur flying in 6 different directions within 30 seconds! They may be little and cute but they have very strong personalities and are as smart as can be. As someone else said people who hate little dogs have usually never gotten to know one. At least not one who is properly trained. |
I was walking my mom's Chihuahua last year and I had someone tell me that they weren't real dogs. It was some guy over 6 foot and the woman he was with (wife? GF?) couldn't have been more than 5'1". I asked him, "What makes a dog a real dog?" His response was something along the lines of big ones that was at least the size of a German Shepard. So my response was "Well, is she (nodding to the woman) not a real woman because she's shorter than average?" She smacked him, agreed with me, and he turned red. Jerk. I'm only 5'3" so I'm still shorter than average too, lol. |
