Sophie and Ziggy have a Yorkie daddy and a Maltese mommy and (even if the did unknowingly come from a puppy mill :eek:) they are the best little dogs in my whole world! They give so much love and the sweetest puppy kisses!:)

I am thinking about getting a purebred Yorkie boy.:)

I see no wrong in getting a mixed pup from a responsible breeder, there just aren't many of those around. By getting one from a breeder who does the health checks and truly cares about them, I can't see how that is much different from a breeder with purebreds, it just isn't as common.
All I can say is, I hope your breeder is one of the responsible ones as I really don't support getting a mix from someone who just throws two mixes together and all the sudden they are designer pups and possibly a genetic time bomb. I really hate when people don't do their research and think they can throw two dogs together and everything will be fine and then they wonder why they end up with a sick pup.

I personally love yorkiepoos. I think they are such a wonderful combination, such smart and playful dogs. I have 2 and wouldn't hesitate to get another from a good breeder. My yorkiepoos are smarter than all the others and their personality is wonderful.

I bred my yorkiepoo once. I knew her background, all parents were tested. I knew what to expect. Puppies went to great homes on a spay contract with a health guarantee and I even gave the new owners a good idea of how their pups would turn out because I did my homework. I didn't charge a ton of money or call them special or designer. But those pups ended up great, so much so that all the owners wanted another one. They were healthy great tempered beautiful yorkiepoos.

I'm just saying, not always is it bad to buy a mixed breed from a breeder, it just depends on their intentions and goals. I'm all for rescuing and encourage it as there are so many great dogs out there but that doesn't mean I don't prefer getting a dog from a breeder where I will know the background, temperament and possible issues whether it be purebred or not.

I believe all dogs deserve great homes, and I'm sure this little "morkie" will have a wonderful home with you.
However, I doubt that any byb that breeds these "designer" breeds doesn't have a real reason for doing so other than making $$. I have yet to hear a breeder give a good reason for mixing breeds, so my ears/eyes are open for a reason that actually makes sense.

There is no real reason other than money. Even the man who first bred labradoodles for seeing eye dogs for people with allergies regrets the fact he did.

I know it is frowned upon. She doesn't advertise designer dogs. She occasionally will breed the mixes upon request. She has been very thorough in checking my family out as we have her. I am excited for our new addition!! We are actually going for another home visit this afternoon and will get to see him!! We won't be able to hold him yet as she won't allow physical contact until they have been vaccinated which I think is great! But I will be taking a pic or two to share with you all!

As far as I can tell it's still legal to have whatever kind of dog you want to have in this country. Americans may be facing all kinds of problems but the producing of Morkies is not one of the major ones.
I don't like the idea of people producing more dogs when there are so many that are being destroyed or are homeless. But I'm not going to condemn someone because they want a puppy as long as the pup is going to have a good lifetime home with people that care for it properly. I know that a good many people on this forum have Yorkies that they did not get from a "show" breeder. Many came from pet stores and backyard breeders. Many are not purebred. The fact is we live in an imperfect world with imperfect people but we still love all dogs and try to accept all people who love their dogs.

Well said gracielove, I could not agree more. Anyone who has a dog, that they love and provide the best for, is ok in my book.

There are PLENTY of mixed breed pups being euthanized daily in shelters (oh...and purebred as well but that is not really the issue here). That's all I have to say.

I for the most part will bite my tongue here, and in all honesty say I am glad that the dog...yes a mutt, but i'm sure so so cute none the less... is going to a good home where he/she will not be passed from home to home or sent to a shelter but be loved for his/her WHOLE life. I remember your first post about this dog how your son fell in love with the pup and how everyone in your home has their own dog but him. SO i think it's good he got to pick his own dog too, because you know it's what he wants and what he loved from first sight.

Breeding mutts because she's getting "requests" for them is not a good reason to do it. And the only "mutts" I've owned have been fosters and rescues. I'd never buy one from a "breeder" no matter how awesome their standards seemed. BUT Congrats on your new addition and can't wait to pictures of him!

Just because there are PLENTY of dogs in the shelter does not mean you have to or you should adopt from the shelter. That is not the person’s fault. If that person wants to rescue then that is great, but if she doesn’t she should not be looked down upon. Kendra is very excited to get this new puppy, I have no idea why people have to post things to make her upset or try to take away the moment, A lot of people on here think they are saints, well IMO you are no better than the next person.

Well, I'm no saint, but it seems like many of you are missing the point. The only reason I'm against breeders breeding mixes is because this country kills millions of dogs a year. Because people cannot predict what a mix will look like and how they will behave, they are more likely to go to the pound, and be killed. I can't believe that a dog lover wouldn't find this morally wrong. So how do you not add to the problem? You don't buy from a bad breeder, and one that isn't breeding for any other reason than to preserve and improve the breed. You find breeders who demand limited registration, you can't do that with a mixed breed, so those dogs are more likely to continue to add to the overpopulation problem, and you find someone who will always take the dog back and give it a home, no matter what. Rule of thumb, for every dog you buy, two will take its place, so when you buy from an unethical breeder, you are giving her a thumbs up and saying you approve of what she's doing. It doesn't matter how nice and wonderful your breeder is or how much you like her, she's adding to the problem of overpopulation of dogs. Do you all think it's right that we just breed whatever, and kill the ones that no one thinks are cute? As I said before, it's Kendra business what she buys, but like it or not, we are all role models, and her title is suggesting that you should be proud when you buy any dog from a bad breeder, so she’s encouraging others to do what she did, and this is what I find especially sad. This country is better than that, we should not be killing millions of dogs a year. So yes, some of us will speak up, and I hope with all my heart some of you will listen.

Up to this point, I have not been offended. I completely understand everyones point of view and I respect it....But, I am offended by you insinuating that I am encouraging EVERYONE to buy from backyard breeders, bad breeders, etc. I apologize for sharing our news. I never meant for it to be an "in your face" type of thing. I will not apologize for giving this puppy a great home that he will live happily in his entire life.....that's all I can say.

I've had mixed breeds all my life, all through rescues. I love and have loved them to pieces. That being said, I would never pay a breeder to purposely cross dogs to fulfill a pet market any more than I would pay someone who purposely breeds off standard dogs because someone thinks they are "cute". Neither breeder is doing anything to improve the breeds, but rather are in it just for the money. That's what makes me sad about the "designer dog" trend.

I am against back yard breeders, I am against people that abuse dogs, I am against the Japanese that hunt whales, I am against Battery- Cage eggs, I am against all things unethical, but do you honestly think things are going to change.? In all honestly there are far more things in this world that need attention that someone buying a Morkie. We can NEVER solve the unethical breeding.

You're title suggests that Yorkietalkers are snobs, and somehow we wouldn't welcome a mix here, I'm offended. You also seem to think I'm saying you need to apologize for giving the puppy a great home, not sure where that one come from, but you can't be serious, can you? My problem again, is that every dog deserves a good home and I want people to look first at rescues and shelters, if they want a mix. There is really a huge supply! You said something about wanting a puppy, and the dog I linked was only 20 weeks old and that's still a puppy. You may have not meant it to be an "in your face thing", but that's exactly how it came off to me. Again what you do is your business, I'm only giving reasons why I hope people do not follow your example.

Of course there are things MUCH more important that buying a mix breed dog from a "breeder" BUT this is a dog forum, where dog issues are discussed. So that's what we are bring attention too.

I think for the most part we are all happy that this li'l morkie has found a home with KenraE, at the same time we are sad about the breeder who breeds these litters from time to time upon REQUESTS for the mix and that although kendra's dog may be loved forever it's whole life, what about the others? What if an extra puppy is born who no one requested for and it goes to a home who just rehomes it and so on and so forth. Or what if not enough puppies are born to fill the request and the lady decides "oh just one more litter, the last ones went to good homes fast" then there are extras in that litter? What about all those puppies?

I also am TOTALLY fine that Kendra announced the arrival of her Morkie and that she is excited. BUT she didn't have to flaunt that it was from an "amazing" breeder, whom yes, may be one of the best out there, idk. But for the sake of other people who are less educated and now may go out and seek a BYB for a "designer mix", it did sound more like a flaunt/support of mix breeders by the title.

Let us not forget that once upon a time our beloved yorkies WERE mixed breeds.... They were bred with several breeds till finally the final "product" was produced. Who's to say that Morkies and the other breeds won't eventually become a breed of their own? Either way, a new baby announcement is always a good news here on yorkie talk :-)

You can say that about every problem there is, should we just give up, or be apathetic? If you look at other countries, you will see that the United States has done some great things in regards to making people aware of the needs of dogs. In other countries, the dog problem is so severe, they don't spay and neuter and there are no pounds to put to sleep the leftovers, so the dogs starve to death on the streets. While I hate the thought that healthy dogs are being put to sleep, it's a lot better than watching them starve to death. We are also making progress on the puppy mill situation, years ago, people didn’t care at all, but now a significant majority do care about the treatment in mills. I will be forever grateful to the people at Yorkietalk who came before me and educated me, on why it's important to choose the best breeder you can find, and also how to find a great breeder, and I'm here because I want to give this message to others. One thing, I want to remind you of, is that every dog sold that’s a mixed breed, is sold on open registration, unless they have been neutered by the breeder first. Let’s not forget A FEMALE DOG AND HER OFFSPRING CAN BE RESPONSIBLE FOR THE BIRTH OF 67,000 DOGS!http://www.fmhs.org/home/spay_neuter...ay-neuter.aspx So unless this breeder is neutering her dogs before she’s selling them, she’s contributing big time to the surplus of dogs.

I can see your point.... But in no way was that my intention. I wasnt purposely looking for a "designer" "mix" pup. Again, we were actually waiting on a litter of purebred akc yorkie pups who happened to be parti colored. She (even though perhaps morally and ethically wrong) had also bred the same parti yorkie daddy as a request with a Maltese. She only has a litter about once a year, but it just so happened that she had both of these. The two boys (purebred parti yorkie and the morkie) look almost identical. We decided to take the morkie... I can't tell you why...my heart told me to. She isn't advertising these pups and isn't selling them for a small fortune like most I have seen do. I'm not saying she is the BESt breeder, however I do feel like she does the testing and really cares about her babies.

As far as rescues go... We did look. We have been in contact with the local shelters for a small breed dog. In the past several months, they haven't gotten anything I thought would be a fit for my others. Bevo is terrified of any dog larger than him. I wanted to make sure our new addition would not be much bigger than him. I live in the Texas panhandle. Middle of nowhere.... The bigger cities that have tons of rescues like Dallas, Oklahoma city, etc are all about 5-6 hours away. Could I have driven? I could have....maybe I should have. I wish I could take in all these blues that have been born recently too...and I've even offered. Perhaps I made a morally bad decision, but I'm going to stick with my decision and know that this particular mix will never be re-homed or ever find himself in a shelter.

No one has forgotten the work that went in to creating the breed we now know as Yorkies. The big difference between then and now is that, back then, the mixes were being created to bring out certain characteristics and the mixes were bred with other mixes until the breed traits were developed and a standard was created. That isn't happening now since instead of breeding two "morkies" together to create another morkie, the BYB's are still breeding a Yorkie with a Maltese. There is no standard or even an agreement on what a "morkie" should look like. It's also considered pretty much standard that at least 3 breeds need to be included in the mix in order to create a unique genotype that identifies a "breed".
