Ignorance is bliss, right? 3 Attachment(s) Get ready for a mini-novel: First off, hello! I'm Dee. I've been here for a few weeks but never really made an introduction. I was waiting till Teddy was home before I did any of that. So yes, I'm from Texas and have just got my first yorkie puppy. I had a rescue yorkie before that passed away due to heart problems. I got her when she was older, and I hope I gave her the best life. I love this board and I have learned SOOO much, especially what to look for in a breeder, I was incredibly confident with my choice, but with that being said: Teddy FINALLY came home, after such a long wait. While he is an adorable puppy I feel that I have been lied to. I was told he would come with AKC papers and pedigree, but he came with APRI papers and no pedigree, no certifications (his parents tests which I asked to see). I was told I would get copies of all of these things and when I asked about it, she said all I have to do is fill out the APRI form and it will send me the pedigree. (BUT the parents aren't AKC either and APRI really is not credible at all) He was handed to me and he had a bad smell like old pee. But the breeder said he was given a bath yesterday. My thought process was well..he is a puppy, they sometimes step in their pee. What worries me is that, even though I saw that he was coming from a family environment and I met the parents, I didn't really see where the puppies were kept. (They were all just out running around when we went over, I assumed their sleeping arrangements were xpen) He's very reserved. When I met him the first time he was bouncy and happy to meet me. I think maybe it could have been the stress from the long drive and being taken away from his family (he's 16wks and im sure he's super attached to his mom and littermates) I have not had a new puppy in a VERY long time. I've always rescued adult dogs, so im not sure what to expect, but I don't know how normal it is for this behavior and also to have super soft/runny stool. When we got home I sat with him outside and he pooped and then when I went to pick him up he flattened himself on the ground. Which seems really uncharacteristic for a "well socialized" puppy.I gently calmed him as I picked him up and now he's fallen asleep on me on the couch. Now, it's like why did I take him when I felt really uneasy.Well, I felt bad for him and the breeder told me that many people were asking about him and I don't want him to go to the wrong person who might not have patience for this little guy. This little puppy being handed to me just looked so scared and I didn't understand what happened to him over the past two almost three weeks since I saw him last. My hubby said he's just scared and to give him a few days as he handed the breeder the money. The breeder was such a nice person that I really didn't want to believe that all may not be as it appears. However, on the drive home my husband suggested that I get a DNA test to give me peace of mind, my response was "well, ignorance is bliss right?" I think I will get a test though, I didn't pay an extreme amount being that he's a parti yorkie, but if he's a mix then I overpaid and I would really hate to be the person to sue my breeder but I thought I was getting a dog from this really great person who has turned into someone pretty fishy... Don't get me wrong I am happy to have Teddy and I will work with him on his socialization and confidence. I have no problem helping this little guy, and I will love him no matter what. it's just the fact that I may have been blatantly lied to that upsets me. He's going to the vet on friday (sooner if he continues to have runny stool) if he has anything going on this breeder will have a lot of explaining. Here are some pics, he's now inching his way to get closer and closer to me. Such a sweet little guy. If this has ever happened to you, what did you do? |
He looks like a golden parti to me. Does he have any black on him. I think hes cute |
He is a very cute boy! If his stool is still soft tomarrow, you need to take him in. There are several things that can cause this in a puppy bacterial infection in his intestines and parasites, both of which need to be addressed quickly. I noticed that he has a collar on in the pics. If he is uneasy about it you might try letting him wear it in small amounts until he gets used to it. Hope he is feeling better quickly and adjusts to his new home. He needs lots of soft talking and hugs. When I brought my puppy home last spring I even rocked her. She has adjusted very well and runs the house now. |
I don't know anything about partis but he's cute. I didn't know they had that much white on them. Did you not ask about the AKC papers he supposedly had on him while you were there at the breeders? It's such a shame how there are SO many dishonest people nowadays. I would get him DNA tested. Even if you found out he wasn't full yorkie, you wouldn't love him any less. I think you need the proof to show to the breeder. Did you get any paperwork on him? Micro chip papers? Anything with an address on it? I found out the hard way, when I didn't know anything about dogs. My Uni had papers but the "breeder" couldn't "find" them and would mail them to me. she was local, but when she finally got around to mailing the paperwork (surprised I even got them) for the microchip they were from out of state, a clear sign she is a broker or reseller. |
This has never happened to me. And I'm so sorry it happened to you!. Runny stools are not uncommon when the pup is getting used to his new environment, but definite mention to the vet on Friday or earlier as you said. Make sure he keeps well hydrated and warm (sure you know this too). I would want a BAT test done unless the breeder did one before releasing the pup to you. 16 wks is the recommended time frame for this test. Bile Acid Test. It is a simple test and is done with a blood draw. I don't know the laws in the US, but you definitely were lied to, and that doesn't sit well with any-one. I'm not sure if you did ask the breeder for the AKC registration number and names of the sire and dam, but that could have been a huge flag if she was unwilling or unable to supply their details. BTW do you have any written documentation where she refers to the sire and dam as AKC registered? Emails, posting on her website? There are facilities that do genetic testing, not too expensive I believe. Mars testing is one name I have heard of. There was a thread on here in Breeders Review I believe where a similar situation occured. You can do a search to see if you can locate it. I would want to have a very very through check out of this pup; given that she lied to you about the registry of her dogs. Go to the vet with stool sample, urine sample, ask these be tested. Also have the vet perform a through exam, knees (you want to know if this pup has LP - luxating patellas, eyes, ears, testicles(are both descended?), Bat as mentioned before, heart (listened to), hips palpated (see that vet does extension and internal rotation), hock joints (should be supple, not lose or rigid), rib spring. Exam skin (looking for clear skin, no rashes, bumps, or abrasions). Look at mouth and teeth. Your pup looks very cute indeed. |
He is so gosh darn cute! I don't have an advice because I knew nothing about the extent of puppy mills and that there where brokers until after I got Callie and found this website. Then looked up a few things and found Callie came from a puppy mill and that I got her from a broker and she is my only dog so I have never dealt with a breeder. I could not imagine life without her but we have had some health issues. I hope everything goes ok with him and that he is just a little scared because of the change. |
Teddy is absolutely precious. Congratulations on your new little boy:) Gemy gave you excellent advice, I would follow her suggestions. As far as him seeming to be uneasy and flattening himself to the ground when you went to pick him up, it may not mean anything. Belle has been with me since February and she still sometimes does that when I bend down to pick her up. She reacts better if I get down to my knees first to pick her up. |
I did ask her about the AKC information before I gave her a deposit. She said she will get it printed out for me when I pick him up, so when I asked her why the papers were not AKC she said it was cheaper to register her litter with APRI. However, when I asked her to supply the parents paperwork (in person yesterday) she said she didn't have it printed out. I assume she doesn't have any. She seemed like a really good breeder but I guess she learned how to tell people what they want to hear. I will report her to the AKC as well as APRI if the pup is indeed a mix as well as for lying to me. Ugh people are so disappointing. As for Teddy, well that first night is a doozy isn't it? I have not slept yet, he cried in his crate for 3 hours straight, I live in a townhouse and have two neighbors, I heard someone scream through the wall "shut uppp!!" so I knew I had to get Teddy to stop. Of course he easily passes out on the couch. Does anyone have any suggestions? I had a water bottle in his bed, a clock on the side, soft music, he was in my room just in a crate. I understand that he's just scared so I guess i'll catch some Z's with him on the couch. |

For this I recommend moving his crate or expen to your bedroom, it's scary spending your first night away from your mom and litter-mates all by yourself in a strange new place. Rizzo was a very quiet puppy, but I had always planned to have his crate in my room for nighttime so he could see and smell me. It seemed to re-assure him, and I believe many new "parents" have found the same result when they move the puppy to their rooms. Just a side note, if you never intend for Teddy to sleep in bed with you, DO NOT let him sleep with you in your bed ever. It only takes one night of cuddling up to you in bed to leave the lasting impression that that is where he belongs and he won't know what he did if you put him in the crate later on, thus much crying through the night. Good luck! I envy the cute puppy face, but don't envy the puppy phase, lol. As far as the breeder stuff goes, I'd listen to Gemy, she seems to know more about that then I could ever imagine. I'm sorry that you feel duped, but you did get one adorable pup, regardless of lineage. I just hope he is as healthy as he appears :) oh, and some small pups just don't like being picked up, it makes sense, having a huge human you don't know suddenly launch towards you to grab you, I can sympathize with that. :animal36 |

Thanks for the tips! I did have him in my room, but because of the structure of my house my bedroom is adjacent to my neighbors and Teddy was crying nonstop. My husband took him downstairs and we just let him cry but around 4AM I couldn't take it anymore so I took him out and we went outside and ran around the townhouses with him to tire him out. Once he got tired (on the couch) I put him in the crate and sat with him while I slowly closed he door. He eventually fell asleep for an hour and woke up crying. When you have the puppy in your room what can you do to get him to not cry. I'd rather him in my room, but my neighbors are going to hate me ><;; This is the first puppy I've had in a LONG time and I actually feel clueless lol this is quite the experience. |
Dee, all I can say is these first few days are the worst. Funnily enough, not with Harry (our Yorkie) - but with Rosie (our labrador). We have the same house set-up as you - and of course you're going to worry about the neighbours (especially when they're shouting at you!) :) I wonder if it might be worth popping next door to see them and explain the situation (are you on good terms with them?). You seem to be doing everything you possibly can - maybe others will suggest one of those cuddly kind of breathing toys (!!??!) sorry I don't know what they're called! Presumably he's eating ok and his tummy's nice and full? Sorry I'm not much help....Sally + Harry x |
Oh puppies are exhausting!! I remember it well. With my Sophie Kate she HATED her crate at first, she would cry and carry on like a crazy girl. What I did is make her crate a place where she wanted to go, I added a nice soft pad, a fleece blanket and a Nyla bone (all of which are still in her crate today 3 years later). It took a few times of her crying a lot but she adapted in fact today she hangs out in her crate and gets really mad if the cat ventures in there. Are you crate training Teddy as part of his potty training? Another suggestion would be maybe try a Ex Pen along with the crate- I did not do that with Sophie Kate but my next one will have an Ex Pen also. Good luck, Teddy is adorable. |

Teddy is adorable. As far as crying at night, I have used a playpen with an open top next to my bed for one of mine, another one I put in a small crate on my bed and that worked for another one of mine. The main thing is to give him time to adjust to his new home and be consistent. They learn real quick how to get you to spoil them. That's why Mine as all spoiled! ' |
ckc not akc I have a breeder friend that has AKC breeding dogs but she registered them with CKC-Continental Kennel Club so that she could register their puppies CKC because CKC does NOT charge for registeringa liter like AKC does. If a buyer wants AKC papers she has them pay the fee that AKC charges. Maybe that what's your breeder did?? |

If you do not want Teddy sleeping with you do not make the mistake of putting him in bed with you, not even once. I let Thor and Little Bit in bed with us and now we have 5 dogs sleeping with us. Molly sleeps with me because I put her in a x-pen the first night and she was so scared so I just could not bring myself to put her back in there because she is a puppy mill dog and I just could not do that to her. So needless to say I am sure glad we have a king size bed, but since I broke my ankle I have been sleeping downstairs on the hide a bed because I cant do steps and now I have all 5 of them with me in the small bed lol. I would try a stuffed animal, it worked with one of my puppies. They think it is one of their siblings. As far as Teddy being a pure bred, I guess that really does not matter now, he is yours and you love him. |
[QUOTE=TeddyGrahams;3730054]I did ask her about the AKC information before I gave her a deposit. What is done is done, and the following is not meant as a criticism, but for future readers to know what their RIGHTS are prior deposits, prior signing a contract, etc, etc. Number one: You have the right to ask what registry the dam and sire are registered under and to receive this information. Both registration number and official name should be provided to you, right away, no delay, no print out reports, no b.s. whatsoever. For example if you were to ask me over the phone what is the registered name of my Yorkie, I don't have to pause, I don't have to look up anything, I say Rigair Sir Razzle Dazzle. With this name alone, you can see him registered in AKC, in CKC (Canadian Kennel Club), you can look up in OFA to see if he has anything there, in CERF database etc. With this name, you can secure his pedigree, to check out his lineage, and what health tests were done throughout that lineage. Accept no demurral, no explanation, for a breeder who does not know the registered name of their dog. The possible exception is with foreign registeries and by that I mean registries from Europe, where the registered name is a mouthful for the owner to speak. Even still the owner should try to sound out the name, and if they are anything like I, say look, I'll email you her name and registration number. :):) Here is how I would respond when the breeder said to me; "I will print out the report, when I pick him up". Sorry, I'm afaird you don't understand me, I need to take a look at their pedigree, and their posted health tests, before I can commit to any purchase of your puppy, no matter how cute he/she looks. This is quite simply due diligence on my part. I'm sure everything is as you say it is;) And oh yes, I do know that no health registry records BAT results, so please fax me or scan their test results to my email addy at xxxxx. or fax number at ......... Yorkies have their fair share of health problems, and a discerning public who wishes to purchase a Yorkie, should check to see what health tests the dam and sire have had. If more buyers ask for this, and walk away when they don't receive legitimate information, it is one of the ways the Yorkie lovers can help to keep breeders "honest". Honest in their commitment to breed only healthy dogs, at the minimum. This is not about oh I don't want a show dog, I just want a PET!. You deserve a PET that is every bit as healthy as any show dog. You deserve a PET that has good healthy structure, that will allow this dog to live a long a well life with you!. And another thing any breeder worth their salt will know if their puppy at 10-12 wks old has "loose" knee caps. Breeders now should probably keep their pups until 16wks so that they can perform the BATs test prior to placing a puppy. Please explain to your vet your concerns about the parentage of this pup, how you were mislead, and that you really, really need to know, if this pup is of sound body and healthy mind. ' |
Forgot to mention.. I'm assuming you will keep this pup no matter what, so get HEALTH INSURANCE now right away prior any vet diagnosis of anything. It is a prudent financial thing to do. Get one that covers genetic defects etc. |

From the AKC website:http://www.akc.org/pdfs/literap.pdf It looks like a one time cost of $25 plus $2 for each puppy whelped. Laughable in terms of what the pre breeding tests costs. So we have a breeder who has oh lets say 4 pups and wants to save $33 bucks??? You've got to be kidding me. |
@ Gemy, thank you for all the useful information. You have been fantastic! I totally thought I had this covered until it came down to a bunch of lies. I should have just walked away but yea what's done is done and I will love this pup no matter what. Just a terrible learning experience when I thought I had did so well. It's inevitable that we will get another dog at some point and now I know better than to take someones word for it. Also, YES! As soon as he has his first vet appointment (Friday, his poop was still soft but had form and he's eating and drinking well) we're enrolling with PetPlan. As for Teddy well the rest of the morning went quite well. Before going to work Hubby propped up the crate so that Teddy will see me in bed. Teddy was comfortable knowing I was right there and so we both fell asleep for about 5hrs. (Teddy in the crate, me in my bed) Teddy will cry when I get up to use the restroom, which happens A LOT so I will praise him when he stays quiet but will stay in the bathroom if he cries. When he stops crying I tell him "good boy!" I think if I keep doing it, it will work. He seems like he was catching on. I will not let him sleep in my bed, even though it's super tempting I know in the long run he will never learn to be comfortable with the kennel if I just cave. Thanks for the tips everyone! Hopefully things will be smoother tonight >< I hope |
Your baby is very cute and sounds like he is also very smart and already attached to you. |
I'm so sorry you were lied to. Welcome to the most unfortunate club. :( I hope you and Teddy have a happy healthy life together. You can't ask for much more. :) |
I just wanted to say Welcome! Your baby is a cutie! |
I don't know as much about AKC registration and such like so many of the others do, but my first Yorkie was AKC registered -- however she was not a perfect example of a Yorkie. She did, however, has a great personality and I enjoyed 13 years of love and devotion from her -- she had a number of health problems (probably genetic) battled all of them and she was just great through all of it. So I'm not sure having or not having an AKC certification may be all that important. My current Yorkie is an almost perfect Yorkie -- if there is such a thing, she is it! Of course, I am not un-prejudiced in my opinion!!! LOL I love her dearly, but not more than my previous Yorkie, AKC credentials are not the main thing when it comes to love. My Cali is a Service Dog, but remarkably most Service Dogs are not AKC registered dogs, but WOW what they provide for their handlers!!! The hard part is the place you are in now -- raising a puppy is hard work, isn't it. Cali has slept with me since the 3rd night I had her, but I agree that you should not do that unless it is your plan. Good Luck and Dog Bless you!!!! |
I know you have some registration problems but I do think your dog is pure bred. He looks like a parti but he has a lot of tan thats why I asked if he had any black because he looks like golden partis I have seen |
One thing you shouldn't do is let them out when they are whining. This will give him the impression that he'll be let out if he whines so he'll keep doing it. My boyfriend let Geno out of the room one night while he was whining since I was trying to go to bed early. So for the next few nights after that, I had to deal with him crying for an hour by the door. My boyfriend asked me if he should let him out and I said no. He needs to learn again that allowing him out will make him think he'll get out when he cries. We had him on a good routine of going to bed with mommy so we had to get him back into it. He's good now. So yes it takes time, and patience. LOTS of patience! Something I read on here that I thought was really good advice is to take him on a walk before bedtime if you can or even have some hardcore play time with him before bed! Some YTers have gotten one of those heartbeat dogs. They are stuffed animals that have a battery powered beating heart in them. Puppies are suppose to associate it with sleeping with their litter mates since they feel/hear their litter mates heartbeats while they are snuggled up with them. You could try that. |

He's VERY lovable actually, and so smart! Quote:

We found putting the crate facing our bed at night was the best thing because he can see and smell us, so he didn't cry but 3 times last night (each time I took him to potty and then put him back) it went well. I feel decently rested :) He does cry when I get up to use the restroom so I stay in the bathroom until he's quiet and then I come out and praise him for being quiet. He did /very/ well. So yea, just gotta figure out how to get him comfortable with being alone in the crate which will take some time I suppose. Sucks cuz I got a dr's appointment tomorrow so he'll be alone for a few hours. And thank you to all those for advice and comments. He sure is a cute little bugger |
