Yorkie Talker | anal glands Alphie seems to have a frequent problem with anal gland discomfort. Is that normal? I have taken him to the vet approx every 6-8 weeks to have them "taken care of" ....but it seems be really stressful to him when she does it. I hate to take him but i don't want them to get infected. Is it normal for them to need attention this frequently? Is there anything that I can do to prevent more problems? Should his diet have more fiber? | There are alot of dogs who come to our clinic once a month for anal gland expression. Its pretty normal for small dogs. As long as they are not infected i wouldn't worry about it. And most dogs that i groom once a month have to have them expressed everytime. Is his stool firm? If its isnt you may want to try something to firm up his stool. |

| I used to take Soph that often. I started adding green beans to her breakfast every morning and it's really helped. Just regular canned no salt added. I've heard others get fresh and steam them or do frozen but the canned is easiest for me and it does the job. A little dab of sweet potato or plain pumpkin (not pie filling) will work too. All of these add fiber which helps firm up the stools. |
