Why are yorkies so hard to housebreak?

If you don't, you may find yourself an unwelcome guest. I have a wonderful neighbor who used to stop in for a visit while walking her dog. Shadow was recently boarded and learned to mark and now he lifts his leg when he comes to visit. Unfortunately, he is no longer welcome in my house or other neighbor's houses now.

Yorkies have a reputation for being very difficult to housebreak, but if you get a puppy from a responsible breeder no younger than 12 weeks who has started pad training it can make all the difference.

I forgot to ask ... has he been neutered yet? If not, that can be a lot of the problem.

Just curious regarding your 'neutered' comment. Is it the same for females? Does potty training get easier once they are spayed?

Intact males will mark in the house which can make housebreaking impossible.

We're in the midst of training Mabel, who is 17 weeks - she's been getting much better but I do believe it's more about training humans to get those little pups out often - pretty soon it just sinks in that she gets praised for peeing outside and one day it just works. Darwin was pretty easy but it was lots of trips outside. Today we're having monsoon season and the rain is bouncing of the sidewalks - Mabel HATES it but knows she gets to go into a nice warm house when she's done. It'll be nice when she's finally trained!
