Smart A$$ It's official, per DH, I'm a smart a$$, ok, you know I get tired of all the "comments" about Sprocket when we are out in public. Now mostly I just ignore them (the stupid ones) or if someone really wants to know I tell them, BUT yesterday we were in the dollar store, between the fake flowers and the plastic spoons, and MS VIP or so she thought, comes up to me, "can't bring a DOG in here, THE FOOD YOU KNOW", ok wait for it, I looked her in the eye very seriously, "OH BUT HE's NOT A DOG, HE'S A REDHEAD", she closed her mouth and sputtered a couple of times, I turned around finished out the isle went very calmly around then out the door. NOthing I wanted anyway, I KNOW, I KNOW, I just could not resist it. The dog behaved better than I did. I know he looked better and was cleaner than MS VIP was!!!! I know a rant but I hate stupidity. |

If it is their policy not to allow dogs in there, then you can't bring in a dog. She is just following what she is told. If her boss comes in there at that moment and sees you with a dog her a$$ is fired. It doesn't matter if it is a little dog or a big dog. No dogs means no dogs period. Sorry I don't agree with you. |

I honestly dont inderstand why walmart (as well as other stores) will allow service animals into their stores but personal pets are not allowed. A dog is a dog is a dog-regardless of service or not. There's still food there if the service animal is there. And my 1.2 pound Yorkie is never going to touch the ground, the buggy or any shelves. That service animal will. Now, don't misconstrue that to think i have anything against handicapped people and don't want their service animals allowed into stores-I get that they need them for many things. I just think some things are silly. My dog is 100 times cleaner than the rats and mice running around in those stores!! |

Unless there is a sign saying dogs "are" allowed or you ask first, then it's expected that they aren't allowed. As for service dogs vs. regular dogs, there are way fewer service dogs in the world than regular pets. Stores could be overrun with animals if they let them all in. And what about the cat owners who think they should be allowed? The biting animals (service animals are highly trained and less likely to be aggressive)? Many dirty and stinky dogs in the store daily? Service/support/whathaveyou animals should be allowed if a doctor/psychiatrist feels it is necessary. |

[QUOTE=McheleM;3591342]While I agree with you, I feel 1. It should be posted 2. If it's a company policy, it needs to upheld consistently (one store allows it, another doesn't) and 3. It should be handled in a polite and discreet manner. I don't see where the girl was nasty in any way. They don't have a weight limit for their policy... a dog is a dog. As for service dogs, they may go anywhere it's the law. We as able people don't have to see the logic in it..we just have to abide by it. Listen I have 4 little ones and they dont touch the floor at all either but if it isn't allowed then it isn't allowed. The girl simply told her that the dog is not allowed in there because of the food that they sell. It is a dept of health rule. I think the poster was not being very nice to the girl when she was simply telling her that its not allowed. |
If it was posted that dogs were not allowed, they are not allowed. period. I have come to the conclusion that dogs are not allowed unless I asked permission or see a sign posted that they are welcome. I just got back from a trip to visit my daughters in Chicago. We were looking for a parking garage to park a third daughter's car. It was a real mission-- the gentleman at the garage was not communicating very well. Anywho... as we were entering the GARAGE.. he sees Remy.. and says "hold you horses... dogs are not allowed in the GARAGE" a garage???? come on!! any way, I get out of the car and tell the girls I will walk back to the apartment. I guess I was wlking in the wrong direction so he yells at me to come back, he than points to an office and says.."see that sign, well go there and ask directions on how to get to the address you need, but you can't go in... you have a dog" At this point I was a little ...well ... not happy. But hey, the rules are the rules... even in a GARAGE!!!! |
ETA: Bringing a service dog in is a need, not a want. There would be a need to have an animal in the store. Be thankful you are lucky enough not to need to take a dog with you. |

Would you take your dog into the Doctors office with you ? Would you take your dog into a Hospital with you ? Would you take your dog into an indoor Resuraunt with you or into a Lawyers office, or even a Bank ? I wouldn't.... Dogs... (other than a service animal) Do Not belong in stores or any other business that is not a designated animal friendly store, Sign or No Sign thats just common sense ! |
When I used to work for Jamba Juice, people would try to bring their dogs in. We would tell them that animals are not allowed inside. If they want to order, we can take it outside, and bring their smoothies to them outside. For some reason a lot of people dont understand why we can't let them in with their dogs if they are only going to be there for 10 minutes. All I can tell them is that it's company rule. |
I dont understand the sense of entitlement some dog owners have. |
I may have misunderstood the original poster when she said ms. VIP, or she thought she was. I took that to mean the lady was coming across as snotty. Quote:
I hope this makes sense. I understand them allowing the service dogs in, and I wasn't saying they shouldn't. I'm saying that stores should be consistent. If I go to ross with my dog and have been doing it for 4 years and never had an employee or manager tell me it's a policy to not allow them in, or to have a manager or employee tell me yes, you can the dog in, then to have someone all of a sudden say you can't bring your dog in, it's our policy, it makes you scratch your head and wonder is it really their policy (since it's not posted anywhere that dogs aren't allowed) or is this person just having a bad day and taking it out on me and my pet, or hates dogs, or just is a mean person all around.... If the home depot in garland Texas allows it and even boasts a pet friendly stoe, then the home depot in Richardson Texas shouldn't say no, we don't allow dogs in the store. Especially in corporate owned stores. Franchises can make their own rules about their particular store. |
Not allowed in the garage??? How do people get them in and out of their car? Quote:

Speaking of service dogs there was this guy that had his big german shepard in a restaurant at the take out counter. He just let his big dog stand right in the middle of the isle while people struggled to get around it had thje dog sniffing their crouch etc it was terrible. He didnt even need to be standing there because his wife was doing all the ordering I think even if you have a service you should be considerate but I quess that sense of entitlement rule |

I always ask before entering a store with mine, unless I know it is allowed already- mostly, I am told "if they are not let down it is fine". My bank is TDBank, they are on almost every corner in NYC- they all have huge signs that say to please bring your dog in to get a treat (and a picture of a bone)- so yes, I would take my dog into the bank and I have. My dad is a CPA and owns his own practice- people bring dogs in all the time- he started buying treats for the secretary to give out because so many doggies came to visit. I am a lawyer- I plan to have my own office someday- I would welcome any dog through the door who wanted to come- big, small, or in between. I guess maybe it is a regional thing- in NYC dogs are allowed almost everywhere- it is very common for people to include their dogs in their activities, errand running, or shopping, even eating (at outdoor restaurants) and I have never once encountered a problem with a dog being too dirty, nasty, or noisy. |

Well, I feel like my dogs are part of my family. They are the only "children" my husband and I have together, and I take my children places with me. My dogs are better behaved than my children were and they don't ask for toys and clothes and candy and toys. |

After the were rung up and left the store, it was our turn to checkout. The clerk apologized to us for the disruption. We weren't mad though. You could still hear him screaming from outside as they walked home. I wonder if anyone would have minded if I had Uni with me that day. |
I guess I should understand, I work in a lunchroom in a school and NO one is allowed in the kitchen if you don't work there. The health Department guidelines get stricter every year. So I guess most business are trying to follow the rules. |
it grieves me to see a dog compared to a child. I love my two little yorkies I love them dearly but no where near as much as I love my children. Sorry, but in my books there is no comparison dogs are dogs and kids are kids. |
Stores have to follow the rules. Yes, their are people who work there and sometimes look the other way when they see someone in a store with a little dog. However, when a store manager comes accross the same person a month or two later with the dog, She has to enforce the rules. I don't see why this is so hard to understand? I am disabled and so is my son. We have 2 Service Dogs. This is all legit, and encouraged by our Dr. I have their service dog vests, patches, and cards I can give to people who still want to question it. However, I usually don't bring them while shopping. For me , it would be harder to deal with all the people, shop, and have a dog . I just choose not to even though I am able to. I have seen other people with their service dogs. It is true that most of them are a lab, or a golden. However the ADA states that it does not matter what breed a dog is. As long as they can be trained and have the right temperment. not all dogs are equiped for the job. I have seen Pit Bulls who are wonderful service dogs. It is best to ask a store manager BEFORE bringing in a dog to a store. That is the curteous thing to do. Otherwise a store manager who sees you with a little dog may automatically think your one of those crazy little dog owners who feel they have a right to carry a dog everywhere they go no matter what others think and what the rules are. |
I take Kizzie everywhere with me.. She is ALWAYS in my purse (which is a purse made for dogs) so she never hits the floor. Because when I am shopping it's often on my way home from work (where kizzie also goes) It doesn't make sense to take her home then drive all the way back out to go do some quick shopping when she can sit in my purse nicely and not bother anyone. So far the only place that has asked me to leave is Jo-anns, however, the girl at the cut counter said to leave, the person at the register and the one at the door said it was ok because she was in my purse and not on the floor.. Same store, same visit.. Kizzie has been in the grocery store with me even, most people comment on how cute she is if they even notice her, but because she's in my purse they don't have a problem. The guy at the meat counter even offered her a little treat since she was being so good in my purse. If she isn't allowed in the store, I just wont shop there anymore.. it's not that difficult, it's their choice to not allow dogs in purses, however it's also their loss as i will find somewhere else to shop and spend my money.. There are lots of places to go.. Kizzie is a part of my family and I feel leaving her home for hours at a time is cruel when I can just take her with me. |

I leave my dogs home when I shop. Does that make me a bad yorkie owner??? They get to come with me when I go to Petco but that is it. My dogs are my babies and they are very much part of my family, but it's ridiculous to think that they can go everywhere a human can go. They are dogs, not people..not children... People need to have some respect for other people, and for employees who are just trying to earn a buck, and trying to enforce the rules. They really don't need a snotty response. Just say your sorry that you didn't know. Now you do know, so leave the dog home, or go to the store when the dog isn't with you. |

My real point is, some people have busy lives and can't be home all the time to give the proper attention and care to a dog (especially to a large breed dog, that really has to stay home due to it's size). I chose a small breed because I can take her almost everywhere, and in being able to do that I'm not neglecting her or leaving her for hours and hours alone. She gets LOTS of socialization, play time, training, love, and comfy carriers and places to take naps when mommies busy.. I just hate to see people get judged for taking their dogs in to places, if it's a rule it's a rule, but don't judge me because I choose to take my dog with me when I'm gone, and in that I also choose to not shop places that won't allow me to bring her.. It's becoming so common for busy people to bring their dogs with them that hotels, airlines, stores, resorts, and even Disney Land has a place for dogs now! |
