The vets name is Diane Beaderman, she owns Scohairie Valley Vet Hospital in Scoharie New York.

Nya is in a lot of pain still tody and will not eat or drink, I am syringing food and water into her every hour and hopefully as she starts feeling better she will resume eating and drinking. I spoke to the state director of the rescue and she is LIVID, she is calling the vet today to demand some answers. Nya's belly from the middle of her ribcage to down between her legs is PURPLE.

When i told my husband about them not giving me the dog or her meds until I paid, he said "so you had to pay them to have the pleasure of torturing the dog?"

My hubby is beside himself he looked at me with tears last night as he was holding Nya and repeating over and over again, I am so sorry baby girl, he looked at me with tears and said "I told her she was going to be okay, I would have never dropped her off if I knew". This is HIS baby girl

Does it look like bruising on her belly? W that much bruising after surgery, it sounds like they had bleeding control issues also. Maybe you should consider taking her to another vet to check the surgical site and the pup after what she just went through. She is probably in some sort of shock from what has been done to her. In human med we have had cases (not myself personally) of ppl waking up during surgery due to anesthesia failure. I do not understand why they did not abort all procedures when they noticed anesthetic failure? In human med, anesthetic failure due to major surgery is considered a psychologically jarring exp.

My hubby is a nurse and he has assured me it is just bruising. Her incision looks good as well.

I don't understand why this dog is not in the care of a vet if she is not eating or drinking or in this much pain. I understand why you might not feel comfortable going back to the same place, but at the very least take this dog for pain management someplace else!

I spoke with another vet and he said it is normal for being this soon post op. If she has not improved at all by morning I am supposed to call him again and bring her in.

TresCutePiggies 06-25-2011 08:01 AM

Your sweet Nya has been through so much already. Even if some of it is normal post op spay stuff, I'd try to take her into a vet (not the same one!) today if there is any chance they can relieve some of her pain. I'm just beside myself thinking about her suffering. I can't imagine how you must feel. :(

I don't care what the vet who did not see your dog had to say. If this was my dog and she was "still in a lot of pain" as you said, I'd be at a vet hospital RIGHT NOW getting IV pain meds. Taking your story as true, this baby has already suffered enough.

My lil friend 06-25-2011 08:17 AM

A PHONE CALL!!! They should of asked what you wanted to do with YOUR dog.
I can not imagine someone ,that is supposed to help animals ,torturing an animal. Im glad that your hubby is a nurse and will have some idea as to what is going on. I would be standing in the ER and living in the waiting room until I knew my baby was showing some sign of recovering. But then again my vet would let me camp out at his office, they would of called me in the first place and NEVER expected payment in full if I had a very ill baby to take home and care for.
Im not a squeemish person, attended more than a few people births, but this made my tummy turn and brought tears to my eyes.

24 hours post-op and with all she went through, I wouldn't be terribly concerned about her not wanting to eat. She HAS to drink.

How much pain are we talking? Is she crying? Shaking? Just a bit slow? It can sometimes be hard to completely stop the pain after abdominal surgery, but when it is still to a certain point a day later (crying, etc.), then other drugs can be tried. Your girl needs to see a licensed veterinarian right now, particularly for that amount of bruising.

Just got home from the ER vet. The bruising is not normal he said, but he said it does happen on occasion.

He gave her a shot for pain and told me not to wait until she is in pain to give her more pain meds, for the next day or so he said to just give them so that I can control the pain and not have to try to play "catch up" with it. He is on call tongiht as well and told me to call with any concerns.

I am sooooo glad you went to the ER vet! And thrilled they gave this baby some meds! I am glad he is on call. That will be best if you do need the assistance tonight. Poor little thing. :(

Your regular vet released her without pain meds? I think you should find a new one for sure. It was unprofessional and unethical in my opinion.

I am so, so sorry for your sweet girl to have to go thru this. How dare that vet do this to her. What kind of vet is she to do this?? I'm glad you took her to the ER Vet and they gave her a pain shot. Prayers going out for Nya that she feels better soon.

ladyjane 06-25-2011 10:04 AM

Wow! That was fast! I have never gotten into an EC and out that quickly. Thank goodness she is out of pain.

YorkieRose 06-25-2011 10:09 AM

I am glad she was able to be spayed...it was a horrible situation, but she will never get pyometra and need ER surgery...hopefully, the pain meds will keep her comfortable...dogs do not retain the memories as humans do...once the painis gone she will forget it...maybe you can have her teeth cleaned by a vet who does scaling without the need of medication...teeth cleaning is not painful...all vets used to scale teeth with the dog awake...like a human having their teeth cleaned...best wishes

yorkietalkjilly 06-25-2011 10:12 AM

Gosh, I am smiling all over thinking of that sweet baby getting some good vetting and pain relief! May she nap in contented peace for a good while and wake feeling much better. I know I do once I read your last post! :)
