That is going to be one lucky little yorkie puppy. Sounds like you really have his best interest in mind. He will be 5 months old by the time you go back to school so the longee the better. You will have time to bond with him and everything too. I am a stay at home doggie parent, even though mine are 2-3 yrs old they are still demanding little guys. Yorkie's are a breed of dog who seem to have long puppy hoods. At least mine is. They are also clever little dogs, which can make potty training a little bit chalenging. Also small dog syndrome can be hard to deqal with. BUt , with that set aside these guys capture your heart like no other. Very loyal, and easily can be a velcro dog. LOL .

Haha, thank you! And yes, my yorkie i had before never got fully house trained, as i wasnt the one to fully invest the attention, i was younger and inexperienced, but this one will be mine alone, and will get more attention and training then he could ask for! but i have researched something called the Puppy Apartment, and i have come to a decision i will train him to use that instead of go outside, as i live in canada, and him nor i will want to get up at 5 am to go out in the freezing cold, xD

So happy you have joined YT!!! I just joined not long ago as well and I feel so blessed to have so many here make me feel at home and give such good advice and tons of prayer. I totally know what you mean about the freezing cold winters. I live in Minnesota... and I know my little yorkie (Wiley) would probably freeze before he even took his first step outside. Canada is much colder. I have been working with Wiley on the potty training thing on paper. I haven't figured him out yet because half the time he uses the paper and 1/4 the time he tries, but misses and the other 1/4.. he just goes where he shouldn't. He doesn't get to wonder and stays in the kitchen at this point unless we want to hold him while we watch tv. Good luck with your new baby when he finally arrives. They are such a blessing!!! Congrats!!!

My little girl came to me as a show dog and had never, ever, been outdoors, so she is totally potty pad trained. It can be very convenient in the winter, rain, and especially when traveling by plane - just uses the potty pad in the handicapped stall between flights!

Just an ides - when I first started with her I used one of those 'brackets' to hold the potty pad and it helped because she learned to get all the way up on the paper to use it. Not sure that is very helpful, but was helpful for us.

Good luck and have fun!

What bracket are you talking about and where can I purchase one?

They are also called pee pad holders. It gives it a rim that they can feel so they get all the way onto the pad. I used a cheapy cat litter pan from wal mart, worked just fine. So puppy has to jump into it, no leakage.

Iris Usa- Inc. DIRFT940 Premium Dog Training Pad Tray - Nextag Stores

I have tried all of the "potty pad holders" but like the one that has a hinge in the middle - lasts longer, but is also a bit more expensive. Comes in several sizes. I buy my potty pads at Sams - they are for human people, but good sized and somewhat less expensive - buy them in a big box. They fit the large holder quite nicely - get them in the health department somewhere near the pharmacy.

Hope this helps.

I use washable pads and they work great. I used disposable pads in the beginning until I came home from church one afternoon and it looked like it snowed in the kitchen, then I only had 2 yorkies. In the long run I have saved a lot of money.

LOL! The reason I started the "potty pad holder" was because it kept them from grabbing the paper and running and playing with it!

Thanks for the info on them. I am not for sure if these would even work because Wiley has this thing where he goes for the paper and as soon as his nose touches or smells the paper... then he peeps and is off the paper. He doesn't move his little body forward enough to be on the paper. I am thinking maybe an actual litter box/pan would work better for him. ???
Since we are on the subject of potty..
My almost 3 yr old Shih Tzu started eating Wiley's poop. SO NASTY!!! I have caught her sitting there licking his bottom right when it comes out. Does she think he is her puppy or does she does want his poop... How do I break her of doing this? Do yorkies do this too?

Thank you everyone for the great advice!! I was going to buy a 158$ Puppy Apartment, it is like a crate, but with a bathroom inside, so Jasper could have a bed and bathroom in his crate, but i am never gone long, and i could use that money for other things to spoil him with until i get extra, So do you think a cat litter box would work just as well? I think that would be best, because it is cheap, and he wouldnt have to be stuck in a crate all night for his puppy days, i would love him to sleep with me , Again, the advice is great, and i have already changed two things for the better now, that you guys have informed me with!

Hi. Welcome! It sounds like you are thoroughly researching before you buy - very smart!!

I have only had little girls, but both were pee pad trained. Once they were trained, I never had a problem w them going elsewhere. I used a "play pen" like device. They come as different models x-pens, seabreeze petite pens, etc. I put the pup's bed, food/water dish, and pee pad. It would be cheaper than the apartment and give the pup more room to move around. This really worked well. Gidget still stays in her play pen if I am away (now that she is trained and has run of house). The play pen I have can be adjusted larger or smaller. I use it smaller at night. Just her bed and a pee pad in it. She sleeps in our bedroom in her playpen next to the bed.

I liked this method and it worked well, but you will have to decide what will be best for you and your pup.

You'll have to post pics when you get your pup! Have you found a breeder yet?

Hi and welcome, I just replied to you PM, I also have some great apartment training advice for you, I gave you my phone number so feel free to call. I would love to meet you. Looking forward to hearing from you, you don't know how long I've waited for someone from NS to come on this site. There is also a great yorkie group here in Halifax that does dog walks in the summer, and well Harley and I are always ready to meet people. I can tell you all the great places to shop here too :P
