Hi. I came to YT tonight because I am frantic to get help for Louie. We live in a small rural community and I need a vet asap. About twenty minutes ago my daughter(4 yrs old) said mommy look at Louie..something is wrong with him. Well yes, there is something very wrong. His penis is completely out and he cannot retract it back in. :eek: I'm so very upset for my baby because the vets here don't do all night calls. From what I have read online, he needs to be seen right now and this cannot go on all night long since it can cause tissue damage. I am shaking and I can barely even type. What would you do if this was your baby? He looks at me and is helpless yet I cannot help him and we have no vet til morning. I'm rambling here but begging and hoping for advice.

Try putting ky jelly and help it retract. Or vaseline. Dont let it dry out.

My heart goes out to you as I am too in a rural community....There is some very helpful threads here which have been posted! I have a little un-neutered boy (but will be neutered this week) but I would be so concerned too!!!...I wish you the best!

OH my thank you. I had never heard of this before. Thank goodness I just checked and all is back to normal. I was having trouble keeping my cool and wondering how I would help my baby. I truly appreciate the response and YT is the best!

Take some KY or vasoline & pull gently & kind of roll back the sheath just a tiny bit GENTLY & cover the penis with the lubricant. Then pull out gently on the sheath & work it back over the penis. Make sure the hair doesn't go in the sheath. After you get it back in, trim the hair off of the end.;)

I had this happen with a cockapoo I had with vet on the phone directing me this is what we did . Please keep in mind your puppy needs you there for it is not gross. Wash your handf well and grab some vasiline . run a bit around the base where it is stuck . get your pup calm by petting and talking to him them . Then as fast as you can and as loud as you can clap your hands really loud. This causes a reaction (yes scares him) but the penis retracts back into place. Please let us know how it goes.

My Cockapoo even had his testicles outside the skin

Awww that is sad. It must hurt like crazy! I would most definitely do whatever I needed to do so I could help him. I'm thinking that his testicles were out too because there were two bulges at the base. I'm one that freaks out in an upsetting situation so I was trying to just chill out so I could get him some help. I'm very thankful for all of the advice here! I'm going to make sure I have vasoline on hand just in case LOL. He seems fine today so this mommy is happy!

I'm glad your little boy is better. Just as an FYI, the bulges you were seeing are not his testicles (testicles are in the scrotum and can not be exposed this way). Male dogs create a "tie" when breeding with these bulbs. When males are sexual stimulated the penis swells and the bulbs enlarge, the female's body then "clamps" down on these bulbs holding the males's penis inside her vulva. A tie can last anywhere from a few minutes to 30 minutes of so (average of 15-20 minutes) and the breeding pair separate when the female relaxes her muscles and/or the male's erection goes down. Very often you can still see the bulbs enlarged after they separate. Is your boy neutered? He may have been humping a toy or another dog and got "excited" ;) and this is when you saw his penis erect with the bulbs out. After some time they "deflated" and went back into the sheath. I just wanted to let you know what you were seeing so it's not so scary if you see it again. Keep the hair trimmed off the sheath and get him neutered - that will help alot (some neutered dogs can still create ties but most don't try because of lack of hormones).

I think you will find that the two bulges were not in fact his testicles but part of his penis which a dog uses to "lock on".

Aww I see. Now it is making more sense to me. I'm a first time indoor doggie momma and it seems I have so much to learn. :D Even Louie was distressed by this so I am thinking maybe it was painful to him ??? I'd love to have him neutered but I also worry about putting him under for the procedure since he is such a little guy. If something happened to him I do not know what would become of our family. :(

Actually KY is the best thing to use. Now, I don't know any other way to say this so I'll just say it. His testicles were not out he had a little hard on & it was probably from cleaning himself and it Will happen again so next time it happens don't panick just wait for a few minutes and it will probably go back in by itself. It is best to keep the hair trimmed short so it does not go into the sheath when his PP goes back down though. When the hair is long it sticks to the PP & sometimes will prevent the PP from going back in all the way. I don't know but I'm guessing this is a young dog ? and probably why you have not seen this happen before as he's most likely just figured out how to clean his parts.;)

Aww, poor baby. This has happened to Tate a couple of times and I remember being terrified that first time. :p With Tate, I have to keep his sanitary hair trimmed VERY short - when he would try to retract, he was bringing hair back in as well and that was blocking the way. Once I pulled the hair free and applied a little KY he was fine. :)
