Help!!! Hello, l'm new here, and I need help from people who know. My 3yr old Yorkie is/was pregnant with 2 puppies. Last Thursday she was taken to the vet for a check up and they xrayed her and we saw the two pups. Yesterday she was taken back to the vet because we thought she was going into labor, she was producing milk and her vulva was swollen and purple, he examined her and said she was in the first stage of labor and within 24hrs she would have her puppies. I sat with her all afternoon and most of the night by her and her nest. This morning came with no puppies, the breeder suggested we take her back, we did and they xrayed her again and did and ultrasound and said there where no puppies, but yet the birth canal was complety open as if she was ready to deliver. The vet advised us to go home and look for puppies, we did and nothing was found. There was NO SIGN of anything at all. But she is STILL producing milk and her vulva is still swollen and purple, and she continues to lay in her nest away from the other dogs. Some one please help!!! Has this happened to you ??? Have you heard about this? We don't want to give up on the pups! |
I've never heard of anything like that happening, but I'm not a breeder. Hopefully someone with experience can give you an answer. I'm sorry you are going thru this. |
Really weird. Maybe re-post this in the "breeders" section if you don't get any suggestions here. Not to sound awfull of anything, but what other breeds of dog do you have? Could they have done something with puppies? |
False pregnancy? If that is the case, then she should dry up within a few weeks. You may see her mothering a stuffed toy though. |
are you sure you could clearly see two puppies in the first x-ray? |

Did the vet take Xrays? This is very odd |
I hate to even suggest this, but is it possible she could have ate the puppies? I remember hearing of cats doing this. |
Wow!!! Is it possible that she did have the puppies and they are somewhere in your house?!?! That sounds really weird to me. I mean.........wouldn't there be some kind of signs of the whelping - like blood or something? |
If there was an XRAY showing pups..and now she doesn't have any.. there are limited options.... Do you ever let your dog go outside unattended? A scary thought is she had her pups outside under a porch or something? Or... she ate them? :( |
I'd say the possibility is high that either she or another dog ate them, or she hid them somewhere. |
I think she had a false pregnancy |

Omgosh! if you your vet saw pups with the xrays, they have to be somewhere! This sounds too strange.... |

hmmmmm.....I have no clue! I sure do hope it was just a false pregnancy....:( |
If the female wasn't confined for whelping, which should have been done, there is a possibility of she or another dog could have ate them.....More likely another dog.... The other possibility is her body could have absorbed them.....In this case she needs to be treated with antibiotics. |
Oh gosh; I hope you found them. This post is very disturbing and reminds me, yet again, of why I would never want to breed Lucy. Hoping you find the Pup or that it was a false pregnancy. |
Ok...we have raised beagles for years and I know for a fact this happens I am sure that yorkies are probaby the same....it's gross and graffic so please excuse....don't read if you have a weak stomach please!!!!! When the momma dog is whelping sometimes for some reason or the other she may have trouble cutting the cord. Sometimes while she is doing the chewing and pulling she may pull to hard and rip the cord out of the pups belly, in turn ripping open the stomach. The momma dog may not realize that she is now consuming the intestins! Some momma dogs will push the pup away once she realizes something is wrong but others may just go ahead and consume the pup. This is the reason why all the pups that we have whelped (after I witnessed this) "I" cut the cord for her! Just safer. You have to be present the WHOLE time during the whelping. They can have a pup quicker than anything and have it cleaned up before you know it. Be looking at the momma, turn your back, turn back and there is a pup all cleaned up! Hope you find answers soon! |

I don't think the OP confined this female and there are other dogs in the house.... |
Like i said I know it happens but with 2 pups I doubt it. I didnt realize there were other dogs in the house so that is a possibility |
I have seen it happen with several pups! I don't know if she was just a bad momma or just stupid? I don't know, but the dog that this happened with ended up having 8 total pups, two she had and pulled the stomach out before I could grab them (and ate! she shoved them into the corner of the whelping box and covered them with her paws while she did it and snap at anyone trying to get the pup away) One pup got his cord pulled out a tad to much and had a huge bulge there for awhile. Another pup the momma kept messing with, licking it, pushing it away, dragging it back on and on and on. She totally laid on one. I am certain that if I wouldn't have been there, she would have killed them all and done something with them! She ended up raising 4 out of the litter and it was pure murder trying to keep her taking care of all the pups. Just like people, some females just should NEVER have babies!!! |
[QUOTE=Mardelin;3508277] The other possibility is her body could have absorbed themQUOTE] She could absorb puppies that far along?? Wow. Or maybe that just seems very far into a pregnancy for me? I didn't know a dog could absorb her litter after the first week or so. This is why I would NEVER breed, and Ihave so much respect for those who do it right and do it well.:thumbup::thumbup: What a nightmare it can turn into. Sure hope OP finds some pups alive and well. :( |
Any updates from OP? |
I came here looking for updates as well??? |
This post made me very sad. No update, though...:( |
Sooo . . . do we have puppies or know what happened? |
Nothing posted yet? |
I am really concerned for this OP... I cant imagine what she is going through right now!! This is why anyone who is considering breeding should prepare themselves for anything and everything. But something like this ... Who could have imagined this happening? It\'s so hard to consider the fact that the poor puppies could have been eaten. |
