Is it ok to leave yorkie at home alone for 12-14 hours on a regular basis?

If you really want a companion, an older cat may be alright. My cat doesn't do anything except sleep and hiss at the dogs (when she graces us with her presence, once in a blue moon). At night she creeps in my room and sleeps with me, but during the day she is no where to be found. She was a rescue. Maybe you could go to your local shelter and look into an older cat.

I'm glad you kept an open mind. Most people just see a cute puppy face and don't really put much thought in to how much work a dog really is. That's part of the reason so many end up in shelters .

Truly, all breeds are social- that's one of the reasons humans have such a strong bond with them. It's just that some are (slightly) more content to be on their own for (again, slightly) longer periods of time.

Kudos to you for putting some serious thought in to your life style. That puts you far ahead of the crowd. If and when you do decide to add some type of pet to your life you will be much happier with the decision and so will the pet.

YAYA! you did a great job! i think when you slow down a bit more and have more time to be home with one then you should defin get a yorkie. but until things start to let up. prob just a cat good luck!!

I think it's great she came on here and solicted advice before subjecting a little yorkie to years of being lonely.

OP, there WILL be a time in your life when a Yorkie will be just perfect for you!

Sorry if I offended. I really didn't think it was a serious question. Think about it. If someone is gone for 14 hours and sleeps for 8 that would leave two hours for everything else including being a companion for a pet . It just didn't seem like a serious post to me. If it was sincere then I apologize to the op.

Well, you are right about people that works 40 hours a week and have yorkies, i do.... but.... i also have 2 yorkies who keep each other company, work 2 miles away from my house and check on then every lunch and break, i come home immediatly after work and spend most of my free time... having a pet is a great responsability, and you need to make sacrifices..i sacrified my free time, but i wouldnt change it for the world, my girls are amazing...

IMHO i dont think having a pet would be a good idea at this time, they are not accessories, they become family.. i am not trying to tell you what to do, but you asked for opinions...

Hi, I can not tell you what to do, but my little yorkie, oh my goodness is so happy to be with people & she gets so sad when you leave, I usually pick up my keys & she is right at the back door sitting so pretty waiting to go for a ride. I just know in my heart that I think it is sooo sad to get a little puppy & to leave them alone for that long, maybe a cat or a hamster is a better idea. The little guys need so much love & attention & hugs & cuddles, i would be sad to see a puppy be alone that much. Sorry if I hurt your feeling that is just my honest answer.
